Texas lands commitment from 2023 three-star tight end Spencer Shannon

Texas pulls tight end Spencer Shannon from one of the country’s best high schools.

Texas is starting the week off strong with a commitment from three-star 2023 tight end Spencer Shannon.

Shannon’s commitment comes after Steve Sarkisian and the Texas staff hosted a huge recruiting weekend on campus. He took little time to announce his decision following his official visit to Austin.

The Mater Dei product is rated as the No. 53 player in the state of Calif. and the No. 41 tight end in the nation by 247Sports composite. Shannon’s 6-foot-6 frame and athleticism make him an excellent fit for Texas’ offense.

He chose Texas over other offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee and UCLA.

Shannon becomes the sixth member of Texas’ 2023 class and the first commitment of what is expected to be a busy summer on the recruiting trail.

Texas offers 2023 Mater Dei tight end Spencer Shannon

Texas offers Mater Dei’s tight end Spencer Shannon.

Steve Sarkisian and tight ends coach/special teams coordinator Jeff Banks extended an offer to 2023 tight end Spencer Shannon this week.

Shannon was on campus over the weekend for the Orange-White spring game. He spoke about his trip and what the Texas offer meant to him with 247Sports Greg Biggins.

That was really exciting for me. Iā€™ve been talking with coach Banks a lot and he told me he wanted to offer me earlier but when he heard I was coming to visit, he thought it would be better to offer in person and it definitely made it special.

The three-star prospect from Mater Dei is quickly rising up the recruiting ranks. Shannon has picked up recent offers from the likes of Texas, UCLA, Notre Dame and Stanford.

Shannon’s 6-foot-7, 240-pound frame and athleticism provide him a high ceiling at the collegiate level. Texas likes to utilize the tight end position in their offense and Sark sees Shannon as an ideal fit for his scheme.

Report: Lawsuit filed against Mater Dei after ritual left football player with brain damage

A Mater Dei player reportedly withdrew from school with brain damage after a round of “Bodies,” a hazing ritual where players punch each other until one surrenders.

A lawsuit was filed against Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) after a round of “Bodies,” a form of initiation ritual in which two football players strike each other between the hips and torso until one surrenders, left an athlete with brain damage and a broken nose that required surgery, according to theĀ Orange County Register.

On Feb. 4, the game took place between a 175-pound player and another who was 50 pounds heavier, according to the OC Register. According to records obtained and interviews performed by the OC Register, the injured, smaller player eventually withdrew from Mater Dei and has since encountered issues related to the brain injury.

The news outletā€”which did not name the players due to ageā€”referred to the smaller athlete as Player 1 and the larger as Player 2.

In the immediate aftermath of the fight, Player 1 told a member of the coaching staff and trainer Kevin Anderson that he had fallen and hit his head on the sink. Anderson ā€œspoke with the administrative staff at Mater Dei who told him not to call the paramedics and to delay contacting (Player 1ā€™s) parents,ā€ according to a court filing. The parents were notified about an hour and a half after the fight.

The father of Player 1 contacted the Santa Ana Police Department on Feb. 8. Player 1 left the school on Feb. 19. On the withdrawal form, “safety concerns” had been written.

On Feb. 25, a player provided a coach with a video of the fight.

After initially declining to be interviewed by a Santa Ana police investigator, head coach Bruce Rollinson and athletic director Kevin Kiernan agreed to speak on April 21. Rollinson told police he had no knowledge of “bodies” or any other hazing.

On Tuesday, the parents of Player 1 filed a lawsuit against Mater Dei High School and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in Orange County Superior Court. The OC Register reported that the case “alleges negligence, negligence per se-hazing in violation of the California penal code, negligent failure to warn, train or educate, intentional infliction of emotional distress.”

The OC Register obtained two videos of the fight, police reports, medical reports, court filings and documents from Mater Dei.

According to a court filing, Rollinson told the father of Player 1, “If I had a hundred dollars for every time these kids played Bodies or Slappies, Iā€™d be a millionaire.”

The father of Player 2 is a volunteer coach who has worked with and tutored players at Mater Dei, Rollinson also said.

Santa Ana PD investigator David Angel reviewed the video and recommended filing batter charges against Player 2. He wrote in a police report:

“It is clear that both of the boys involved were willing participants in ā€˜Bodiesā€™ game.

ā€œBased on the documented injuries, which included a broken nose and lacerations above both eyes, I am forwarding this report to the Juvenile District Attorneyā€™s Office for filing felony battery charges on (Player 2).ā€

According to the news outlet, the Orange County District Attorneyā€™s Office does not plan to file charges, as it views the fight as “mutual combat.”

LeBron James reflects on rivalry with Mater Dei ahead Sierra Canyon matchup

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will, unfortunately, have to miss his son Bronny’s first CIF Open Division championship game.

Over 17 years ago, LeBron James and his St. Vincent-St. Mary’s team that went on to win an Ohio state championship and a high school national championship, made a statement in a nationally televised game against California powerhouse Mater Dei at Pauley Pavillion on the UCLA campus. And as the basketball journey of his oldest son Bronny James continues, which already included a game in Ohio vs. St. Vincent-St. Mary’s, will include another full-circle type of moment as Bronny’s Sierra Canyon squad will face Mater Dei on Saturday for the CIF Open Division championship at CSU Long Beach.

At Tuesday’s Lakers shootaround, James was asked about his own memories of playing against Mater Dei and he once again showed his incredible memory in describing a rivalry that dated back to when LeBron was in 8th grade.

“I mean, we obviously we played against them at Pauley against Mater Dei. It was a different situation for us because we felt like it was the same team beating us year after year after year in AAU basketball. In 8th grade, we lost to a lot of those guys in the national championship in Orlando at the Wide World of Sports. It was the AAU national championship and we lost by 1. Then by the time we played them again senior year, we had a lot of pent up frustration animosity, energy towards them and we wanted to beat them. We felt like if we beat them we had a chance to win a national championship and be No. 1 in the country. That was one of those games that showed our team but thatā€™s that. My sonā€™s team, they have a great opportunity to play a really good team on Friday.”

Although James has made several appearances at Bronny’s game’s this season, he will be unable to make his first state championship game as the Lakers have a game in Memphis this Saturday. Sierra Canyon will be looking to win their third consecutive CIF open division title on Saturday.
