Penn State player availability report for Kent State updated

Penn State has posted its player availability report for today’s game against Kent State.

Penn State will be without one of its top defensive players on the roster this weekend when the Nittany Lions host Kent State for a mid-Saturday afternoon non-conference matchup. Head coach James Franklin announced this week that the team will be without safety, Kevin Winston Jr., for an extended period of time due to a long-term injury. This week’s player availability confirmed that for this week with Winston Jr. being among the players officially ruled out on the Penn State player availability report.

Big Ten teams are required to provide a player availability report prior to their respective games each week as part of a new conference policy put into place for the 2023 season.

Penn State player availability report for Week 1 at West Virginia

Penn State’s updated player availability reports confirms a couple of players expected to be out of action.

Penn State’s first road trip to open the season will see the roster without a number of players available. Penn State’s player availability report was released two hours before kicking off at West Virginia, and a total of 14 players have officially been ruled out of action.

Some of the names appearing on the list were not surprising to see. Linebacker Keon Wylie has previously been reported to be out of action for a significant period of time since the spring. Backup quarterback Jaxon Smolik was also banged up with an undisclosed injury during camp.

One of the notable players to miss the West Virginia game includes tight end Khalil Dinkins, who is expected to be a key alternative to star Tyler Warren at the position. James Franklin did note this week that Dinkins had been getting banged up leading up to the game, however.

Big Ten schools are required to provide a player availability report no later than two hours prior to a scheduled kickoff. The policy was put into effect in 2023 and has seen a few conferences follow that idea in 2024.

West Virginia has not had any reported injuries this week. The Big 12 does not have the same kind of rules requiring player availability reports for its members. The SEC and MAC each enacted a similar policy beginning this season following the Big Ten’s lead.

Chop Robinson OUT vs. Indiana

Penn State rules DE Chop Robinson out vs. Indiana in pregame player availability report.

It was likely anticipated that Penn State would be without the services of defensive end Chop Robinson on Saturday against Indiana. Those expectations were met with the release of Penn State’s player availability report leading up to kickoff against the Hoosiers from Beaver Stadium.

Robinson was officially ruled out of action for the Indiana game. Robinson, who left last week’s game at Ohio State after a blow to the head, was one of 12 players listed as out for the home game against the Hoosiers.

Penn State rules out a number of players for Iowa game

Penn State has released its player availability report for Iowa. Here is who is ruled out for the game.

Penn State will be down a number of players this week when they host the Iowa Hawkeyes for the Whiteout game on Saturday night. In all, Penn State has ruled out 12 players for the primetime matchup with Iowa, including wide receiver Malick Meiga.

Meiga was out of action last week at Illinois and his absence from the field will carry over to Week 4. Penn State has also listed wide receiver Harrison Wallace III as questionable for the game. He was also questionable last week at Illinois and was held off the field as a bit of a precaution. How much he sees the field in Week 4 will be seen as the game plays out.

Penn State has also included defensive lineman Smith Vilbert among the players out of action this week. Vilbert also missed last week’s game at Illinois.

The Penn State football Class of 2023 commitment tracker has been updated with the latest recruiting development

The Class of 2022 was great for Penn State, but it’s already time to turn the page toward the Class of 2023. And James Franklin and the Nittany Lions already had a few commitments on the board for the Class of 2023 as the signed letters of intent were coming in for the Class of 2022.

We’ll be keeping track of every commitment that goes on the board for Penn State in the Class of 2023. But knowing that odds are pretty good at least one player will have a change of heart somewhere along the recruiting process, we’ll keep tabs on what they are doing up until signing day.

Mason Robinson worth the wait for Penn State Class of 2023

Penn State played the long game in recruiting Mason Robinson and it paid off.

Penn State got an early jump on the recruiting effort for defensive end [autotag]Mason Robinson[/autotag] out of Maryland, and its patience and effort eventually paid off. When Robinson committed to another Big Ten program during his recruiting process, Penn State kept the door open leading up to the early signing period in hopes an official visit would sway Robinson to Happy Valley.

And you know what? It worked.

Robinson flipped from Northwestern to Penn State just days after making an official visit to Penn State, and after a handful of previous unofficial visits. Robinson joins a recruiting class that was heavy on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football, with a couple of defensive players worth watching as they are developed by Penn State. Robinson could be a fun player to watch grow in Happy Valley.

Here is every player Penn State has announced in its Class of 2023.

Penn State’s start to the early signing period on Wednesday ended with the official signing of 22 members of its Class of 2023. The recruiting class is one balanced with offense and defense and will add some terrific quality and depth on the line of scrimmage a year after addressing some skill positions in the Class of 2022. And while the latest recruiting class didn’t necessarily go off without a mild bump in the road on the first day of the early signing period, it is getting head coach James Franklin excited about the program’s future.

Penn State made sure to sign some of the top players from in the state but also did some solid work beyond the state’s borders. This was especially true in Virginia as the Nittany Lions kicked the class off with the first commitment on the board from Virginia offensive lineman [autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag] and continued to add help from the state right up until the final days of the recruiting efforts before the early signing period opened. In all, Penn State added players from nine different states ranging from Alabama to New York.

Penn State gets commitment from DL Mason Robinson, who flips from Northwestern

Penn State added another defensive lineman to the Class of 2023 with a flip from a Big Ten school

Call it a Big Ten on Big Ten crime, but Penn State is plucking from Northwestern’s recruiting haul to add to its own in the Class of 2023. On Tuesday, defensive lineman Mason Robinson announced

“I am thankful for all the love from [Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald] and Northwestern university (sic) but I am officially de-committing from Northwestern University,” Robinson said in his released statement via Twitter. “I will be going back to where it all started, with Coach Franklin and the Nittany Lions. I am committing to Penn State University.”

Penn State was one of the first offers to be extended to Robinson in his recruiting process, and that was followed by a handful of unofficial visits between 2021 and 2022. Robinson committed to Northwestern in late May, but the month of December has seen a change of heart for Robinson at the perfect time for Franklin and his staff. Robinson announced his commitment to Penn State just days after taking an official visit in Happy Valley over the weekend.

Robinson is a consensus three-star recruit according to the various recruiting services. Robinson is the latest Penn State recruit to come out of McDonogh School in Owings Mills, MD. He’ll follow one of his former teammates at McDonogh, [autotag]Dani Dennis-Sutton[/autotag] from the Class of 2022, and linebacker [autotag]Curtis Jacobs[/autotag], from the Class of 2020, as the McDonogh pipeline continues for Penn State.

The 6′-4″, 230-pound defensive lineman is the second defensive lineman added to the Class of 2023 this week. On Monday, Joseph Mupoyi gave the Nittany Lions an edge rusher to add to its current recruiting haul.

Penn State hopes to have every member of its Class of 2023 locked up during the early signing period, which is open from Dec. 21 to Dec. 23.

Can Penn State snatch a surprise commitment from another Big Ten school?

Penn State awaits a college decision from a three-star recruit from Maryland, but this Big Ten school is the current favorite for the commitment.

There is no secret that Penn State values recruits from the state of Maryland, and the Nittany Lions have had some McDonogh School over the years. That is the same school that has produced current veteran leader [autotag]PJ Mustipher[/autotag] and [autotag]Dvon Ellies[/autotag] as well as former linebacker [autotag]Curtis Jacobs[/autotag]. Now, Penn State is hoping to make one more score out of the recruiting hotbed with [autotag]Mason Robinson[/autotag].

Robinson is a three-star defensive lineman in the Class of 2023 from McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland, and he announced he will be sharing his college decision this Friday afternoon. While Penn State is among the many offers extended to him, Robinson is heavily expected to commit to another Big Ten program this week. Northwestern is the favorite to secure Robinson’s verbal commitment, with the Wildcats getting 100% of the 247Sports crystal ball predictions and getting a decisive 89.5% prediction from On3Sports’s prediction machine. For what it is worth, Penn State has the secodn-best chance of landing Robinson according to On3Sports with a 4.2% chance, and Virginia Tech is third at 3.1%.

So it does seem as though it will be unlikely Penn State will manage to woo Robinson away from Northwestern. Robinson visited Penn State in early April, which followed up another unofficial visit last September and last June. Penn State was among the first schools to extend an offer to Robinson, doing so in April 2021. Northwestern waited until just a couple of weeks ago t extend its offer to Robinson, doing so when Robinson made an official visit to the Evanston campus on May 13.

Robinson holds offers from a number of schools in addition to Penn State and Northwestern. Among those to have offered Robinson are Oregon, Michigan, Tennessee, Duke, Oklahoma, Stanford, Georgia, and West Virginia.
