WATCH: Ohio State football Maryland trailer

The Ohio State trailer for Maryland is up! Watch and experience the adrenaline rush.

When asked about what he liked about his team’s performance on Saturday, Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day kept emphasizing toughness. He felt like his young football squad didn’t display enough of it through the first couple of weeks of the season.

But he saw his quarterback and others work through adversity and situations last weekend as a growth moment, and it’s the one thing Day believes will continue to make his team improve.

That’s the same theme of the latest Ohio State football trailer as well, and we don’t think it’s just a coincidence. The OSU creative team dropped the latest cinematic masterpiece for the Maryland team and it goes through some of the highlights vs. Rutgers last week with Day the tagline, “The toughest team stands tall.”

These are always worth a watch and this one is no different if you are into these sorts of things. If so (heck, even if not), click on the below and get ready to experience an adrenaline rush.

WATCH: What Maryland head coach Mike Locksley said about Ohio State in weekly press conference

Mike Locksley had some praise for the Ohio State team the Terps are about to see on Saturday.

After administering a public flogging to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Ohio State now looks forward to hosting the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday afternoon to try and continue its forward momentum.

Maryland sits at 4-1, but just got the doors blown off of its pride against Iowa last Friday night, also losing its most explosive receiver Dontay Demus to a knee injury for the year. Aside from last week though, the Terps have looked like a pretty competitive bunch and look to bounce back against OSU Saturday.

Head coach Mike Locksley met with the local media over in College Park to preview the matchup and provide a status on his team after the bad-look on Friday. Make no mistake, he knows the challenge ahead traveling to Columbus to take on a Buckeye squad that seems to be coming back to a Buckeye-like level. He had some very complimentary things to say about Ohio State and we’ve got his comments for you thanks to the YouTube channel of the Terrapin Sports Report.

Click on the below and watch and listen to Locksley talk about the talent across the board Ohio State possesses, how impressed he is with quarterback C.J. Stroud, the improvement of OSU’s defense, and more.

Ohio State and Maryland will roll the ball out on the field at Noon EDT on Saturday, with Fox Sports having the call.

WATCH: Ohio State head coach Ryan Day previews Maryland

Watch and listen to Ohio State head coach provide a status of the team and preview Maryland.

Ohio State is beginning to look more like, well — Ohio State. The first three games of the season had fans, media, and coaches wringing their hands trying to figure out why the defense was doing its best impression of a wet paper towel, and why the offense couldn’t finish off drives consistently.

But that’s all starting to round into form over the last couple of weeks. And while beating up on Akron and Rutgers won’t exactly make national headlines, the improvement is obvious, especially when you compare the issues Michigan had in going toe-to-toe with the Scarlet Knights.

Ryan Day likes where his team is trending, but also knows each week is a challenge in a very tough Big Ten. Next up is a 4-1 Maryland team that got run out of the stadium against No. 3 Iowa last weekend. Aside from that though, the Terps have looked competitive.

Day met with the media to preview the matchup and provide his thoughts on the OSU team he’s seeing now and we have the video for you thanks to the fine folks at Ohio State and OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

In it, Day discusses the health of running back TreVeyon Henderson, the talent of wide receiver Chris Olave, the depth of the Big Ten, and much more.

Ohio State will take on Maryland at Noon on Saturday in the ‘Shoe. Fox has the call.

Maryland’s top receiver, Dontay Demus Jr., lost for season

Maryland has lost its top threat on the outside prior to the game against Ohio State.

As if it wasn’t going to be an uphill climb anyway, Maryland’s chances of beating Ohio State on the football field this weekend just got a little tougher.

That’s because Terps’ head coach Mike Locksley announced on Tuesday that star wide receiver Dontay Demus, Jr. has been lost for the season due to surgery on his left knee. That came after Demus exited the game against Iowa on Friday night after already wracking up 61 yards. Maryland went on to lose to No. 3 Iowa 51-14.

It’s obviously a huge loss for the Terrapins. Demus was in the midst of putting quite the year together, having totaled 507 yards already on the season and becoming the team’s main big-play threat on the outside. And with quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa throwing five interceptions against the Hawkeyes, the loss of his security blanket at the receiver position is a big hit.

Now, the Terrapins will head to Columbus to go against a team that seems to be improving quickly, and doing it undermanned.

Ohio State vs. Maryland football preview and prediction

Ohio State looks to continue its dominating ways as Maryland prepares to come to town. We’ve got a complete preview and prediction to get you ready.

It took until week five, but Ohio State finally looked like the well-rounded team that we all thought it was going to be. The Buckeyes did look good against Akron, but let’s be honest, it was Akron.

Beating up on Rutgers might not feel all that energizing, but the Scarlet Knights are a much-improved team. Just ask Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan fan base. After the Wolverines squeaked by Greg Schiano’s bunch a week earlier, you would’ve thought Rutgers was the second coming of the Crimson Tide.

I think Buckeye Nation understands that a win over the Scarlet Knights shouldn’t be confused as a program-defining win. However, fans should be encouraged simply because the Bucks did exactly what they were supposed to do, dominate an inferior opponent.

Maryland comes to town next as Ohio State will face another stiff challenge from a much improved Terrapin football team  — aside from the turnover-laden game last week against Iowa.

NEXT … Records and broadcast information

Around the Big Ten in Week 5: Michigan hype builds, Buckeyes figuring it out

Around the Big Ten in Week 5: Penn State and Iowa set stage for massive Week 6 matchup, Michigan and Ohio State looked good too

It was an eventful weekend of college football around the nation, but things around the Big Ten felt relatively stabilized by comparison. Penn State went 0-5 last season starting with a loss at the hands of Indiana, so it was only fitting that this season saw the Nittany Lions jump out to a 5-0 record by coming full circle with a win over Indiana. Penn State blanked the Hoosiers, 24-0, in Beaver Stadium on Saturday night to hold up their end of the bargain of setting the stage for a big game coming up in Week 6.

Penn State will now head into a massive matchup with the Iowa Hawkeyes next week in Kinnick Stadium in what could potentially be a preview of the Big Ten championship game.

Indiana, now 0-2 in the Big Ten, gets a week off before returning home to play Michigan State in two weeks.

Here’s a look at everything else that went down around the Big Ten in week 5.

Iowa looks ready to host Penn State after dismantling Maryland

Penn State still has to deal with Indiana but Iowa’s dismantling of Maryland shows Hawkeyes are ready for mega Week 6 matchup

Penn State still has to get past Indiana on Saturday night in Beaver Stadium, but fans were able to get a good look at the next opponent for the Nittany Lions on Friday night. The Iowa Hawkeyes traveled to Maryland for a Friday night game that many expected could be a tight one. But boy were those people wrong.

Iowa was absolutely dominant on the road in College Park on Friday night, blasting the Terps 51-14. Iowa led the game 34-7 at halftime and the defense forced seven turnovers. Five of those turnovers came by way of an interception of Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who entered the weekend as the Big Ten’s top-rated passer. And Iowa’s defense picked him apart from start to finish. And for Tagovailia, he was done early in the fourth quarter.

Tagovailoa was pulled from the game as an act of mercy by Maryland head coach Mike Locksley. Tagovailis became the latest victim to receive an in-game benching against the feisty Iowa defense. Iowa also forced Indiana and Iowa State to bench their starting quarterbacks, Michael Penix Jr. and Brock Purdy, respectively.

You probably already know where this is heading, but it is pretty safe to say Penn State and quarterback Sean Clifford are going to be put to the test next weekend in Iowa City.

Iowa’s defense has picked off 11 passes this season, now more than double the INT total of any other Big Ten team as Week 5 continues on Saturday. Iowa intercepted Penn State twice last season in a 41-21 victory over the Nittany Lions in Beaver Stadium last season.

We’ll wait to see how Clifford performs Saturday night against Indiana, but the third-year starting quarterback has clearly been doing a much better of protecting the football this season. Clifford has been given the luxury of solid pass protection and he has done a better job of connecting with multiple receivers while also taking some deep chances with Jahan Dotson. But the bad decisions Clifford made early last season have been non-existent.

That is a trend that must continue next week if Penn State is going to get out of Kinnick Stadium in Week 6. But first, scoring revenge on the Hoosiers in Week 5.

Big Ten football recruiting rankings as of October 1

An updated look at the Big Ten football recruiting rankings sees some shuffling of Big Ten West teams, but B1G East continues to lead the way

At the start of October, Penn State continues to own the nation’s top recruiting class in the nation for the Class of 2022. With the early signing period now just two months away, the pressure is on for James Franklin to find a way to finish this recruiting cycle on a strong footing.

Penn State’s pursuit for the No. 1 class is going to receive some heavy competition in the coming months with Alabama closing in, with Notre Dame still sitting at No. 2 overall. But with no five-star commitments, Penn State’s hold on the top spot is unlikely to hold in the national picture, but the Nittany Lions are still on track to secure the top-ranked class in the Big Ten.

Not a whole lot has changed in the top half of the Big Ten recruiting rankings. Penn State continues to be followed by Ohio State and Michigan, respectively.

Michigan State moved up one spot among Big Ten teams by slipping ahead of Rutgers since the start of September. For the second straight month, Rutgers fell back a few spots in the national rankings as other teams continue putting their recruiting classes together.

There was also a slight reshuffling among Big Ten West rivals Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Badgers actually fell in the updated recruiting rankings form a month ago despite no changes in commitments for the Badgers or Gophers. Still, Minnesota moved up one spot ahead of Wisconsin in the updated rankings, both nationally and within the Big Ten.

Iowa also added a recruit to their Class of 2022, which was enough to help move the Hawkeyes one spot up among Big Ten rankings and two spots nationally. Iowa moved just ahead of Maryland, with the Terrapins taking a slight step down in the national rankings for a second consecutive month.

But the biggest drop by a Big Ten team came from Nebraska. The Cornhuskers have had their shortcomings on the field this season and in the past month the program has had a decommitment to drop Nebraska’s Class of 2022 to just eight players. The updated recruiting rankings have dropped Nebraska 10 spots nationally down to No. 75 overall. Fortunately, it is impossible for Nebraska to drop any lower in the Big Ten rankings, so they have nowhere to go but up!

As a reminder, these rankings are according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Rankings and commitment counts are accurate as of October 1, 2022.

Around the Big Ten in Week 4: Troubles and struggles in the B1G West

Around the Big Ten in Week 4: Wisconsin implodes, Minnesota loses as a massive favorite, and Iowa had a slow start

The first month of the college football season certainly was not lacking for drama around the country. The Big Ten had its share of drama in Week 4 as well with Big Ten West teams having some struggles, an overtime matchup in primetime, and a player apparently quitting on his team in the middle of a game.

Penn State remained undefeated with a 38-17 victory at home against Villanova. Quarterback Sean Clifford became the second Penn State player in history to throw for 400 yards in a game while he and Jahan Dotson continued to move up the school’s all-time passing and receiving lists, respectively. But the Nittany Lions certainly have to address their shortcomings on the ground.

But let’s see what else happened around the Big Ten in Week 4.

Maryland’s Lavonte Gater committed the most obvious targeting call in football history

If you’re Superman diving into someone’s head, it’s targeting.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more obvious targeting penalty than the one Maryland’s Lavonte Gater committed on Friday.

During Maryland’s game against Illinois, the Fighting Illini were working their way down the field in a 0-0 game. As Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters launched a 40-yard pass down field, Gater came in late on the play and delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit, giving the Maryland defensive back a roughing the passer penalty as well.

The play also went to review, upon which targeting was tacked on after Gater launched at Peters with the crown of his helmet. Here’s how the play went down in Champaign at the end of the first quarter.

Yeah that is… definitely as obvious of a targeting call as you can get, honestly. The egregious Superman leap  — while impressive — was absolutely too over-the-top for the situation.

Definitely a textbook targeting call here, so good on the officials for getting this right.
