Is this Florida receiver transferring to the Big Ten?

Khris Bogle transferred to Michigan State earlier in the week. Could this former Gator also make his way to the Big Ten?

Florida’s leading receiver Jacob Copeland entered the transfer portal on December 9, and the first crystal ball prediction from 247Sports has come in just eight days later for the University of Maryland.

Jeff Ermann, the publisher at 247Sports’  InsideMDSports, entered the selection with a confidence score of eight (out of a possible 10) and said that Copeland “appears likely” to transfer to Maryland. The former top-100 receiver took on the No. 1 jersey this year at Florida and led the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Frustration over a lack of targets showed at times throughout the season, and Copeland’s clock is ticking to impress NFL scouts and make it to the pros. Being the top guy at an elite program in the Southeastern Conference would get him the attention he desires, but the Big Ten works just as well and he could put up some gaudy numbers for the Terps.

Maryland is losing several veterans and Copeland’s major competition, fifth-year senior Dontay Demus, is coming off a serious knee injury. It seems like a good fit on paper, and Copeland’s departure isn’t particularly shocking after following Florida’s disappointing season.

It doesn’t sound like Billy Napier will be able to get this one back, but he’ll have Justin Shorter, Trent Whittemore, Xzavier Henderson and plenty of other talented receivers to work with next year. He could also make a splash of his own in the transfer portal.

What Class of 2022 recruit flipped from Penn State to Maryland?

Maryland managed to flip a Penn State commit in the early signing period

There wasn’t a whole lot to lose sleep over with Penn State’s Class of 2022 as the early signing period opened on Wednesday. While one JUCO player will be hopping on board later on during the next signing period in February, the biggest setback for Penn State may have been losing one commitment to a division rival in the days leading up to the early signing period.

Andre Roye, an offensive lineman who had been committed to Penn State, officially signed with Maryland on Wednesday, flipping from the Nittany Lions to the Terrapins despite suggesting earlier in the week he would probably still be signing with Penn State.

Roye’s flip from Penn State to Maryland isn’t necessarily the biggest shocker, and certainly less stunning than witnessing the nation’s top-ranked player flipping from Florida State to Jackson State. Roye, a three-star recruit, is a native from Baltimore, so he was always on the radar for Maryland. A chance to stay closer to home is also sometimes too good to pass up if you feel comfortable in the spot.

Roye had left the door open for a late flip after a late official visit to USC last weekend, when he suggested he may still be heading to Penn State. USC extended a scholarship offer just one week ago.

this is just another reminder that high school players have a lot going on in their recruiting process. As noted by 247 Sports, Roye was seemingly all over the place with his process. Whether by design or simply just having a change of opinions at any given moment, it is important to remember just how much pressure comes with this level of decision for a high school student.

3 takeaways from Florida basketball’s near miss vs Maryland Terrapins

Three takeaways from another exhausting loss for Gators men’s basketball.

Things are starting to get a bit disconcerting for Mike White‘s team in Gainesville. After a perfect start to the season and earning a top-20 ranking in both major polls, Florida basketball dropped the third of four games in December, notching a disappointing 70-68 loss to the Maryland Terrapins in the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday.

Much like in their other games against Power Five opponents the Gators never really looked comfortable in this one though they managed to enter the locker room at halftime with a 33-33 tie. Despite the high level of energy and solid execution, the Orange and Blue once again struggled to finish at times and spent most of the game playing from behind.

While this game had a lot of similar feel to the Ohio State game in which Tyree Appleby nailed a buzzer-beating three-pointer to seal the win, this one existed in an alternate universe where the shot rims out as Florida’s point guard attempted to bring the heroics to Brooklyn once again.

The defeat now gives Florida a Quadrant 3 loss to go along with its Quadrant 4 loss to Texas Southern. This is not the kind of start the Gators wanted heading into SEC play with NCAA tournament aspirations, and given the strength of the conference this year, it could be a rough one for the Gator Nation come March.

That said, here is a look at three major takeaways from Sunday’s loss to the Terps.

Florida basketball looking to put it all together against Maryland

It hasn’t been pretty this month for Florida, but the players are confident they can get back to form.

The Florida men’s basketball team is in New York to play Maryland at the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational on Sunday.

The Terrapins have struggled their way to a 5-4 record this year and 10-year head coach Mark Turgeon has already been fired. Maryland is still looking for its first big win of the year, and Florida has been shaky in December after a perfect start to the year. The Gators have already have one Quadrant 4 loss and adding a Quadrant 3 loss to Maryland could end up hurting when March comes around.

That makes this a must-win game for Florida. The team’s downfall has been three-point shooting among other issues (foul trouble, turnovers). After Tyree Appleby nailed that game-winner against Ohio State, he shot himself right out of the starting lineup going 3-for-17 across three games. Phlandrous Fleming Jr. and Myreon Jones have also struggled to hit the deep ball in that stretch, resulting in Florida shooting under 20% from beyond the arc.

“We have shooters on this team. Good shooters. Forty-percent shooters,” guard Brandon McKissic said. “You can’t control what happens after the ball is in the air. What you can control is your confidence and shot selection.”

McKissic said that Florida needs to get back to playing defense and the shot will fall as they continue to get good looks. Appleby agreed. The team is focused on getting that defensive identity back that they had in November, and the game against UNF was a good start.

Maryland has its share of playmakers on defense, but Florida has won the turnover battle in all but one of its games this season. Colin Castleton is also looking to build off a 26-point night on Wednesday, which should help if the threes don’t fall just yet.

How to follow Florida basketball vs. Maryland Terrapins on Sunday

Here’s everything you need to know to follow this afternoon’s hardwood matchup between the Gators and Terrapins.

Florida basketball is back in action on Sunday against the Maryland Terrapins in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational. The Gators have stumbled a bit since racing out to a hot start but enter the game on a high note having beaten the North Florida Ospreys on Wednesday to get back on the winning path.

The Terrapins, who moved from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Big Ten in 2014, bring in a 5-4 record on the heels of a three-game losing streak, including a loss in its opening Big Ten game against the Northwestern Wildcats last Sunday. Despite the difference in records and the distance in NET rankings — No. 44 and No. 157 for Florida and Maryland, respectively — the bookmakers seem to think this one will be fairly close.

Game day betting odds for Florida basketball vs Maryland Terrapins

Here is a look at the odds for this afternoon’s Gator game against the Maryland Terrapins in Brooklyn.

Florida basketball hit a snag in the schedule recently after starting the season with a perfect 6-0 record in November. Since the calendar flipped to December, the Gators have limped to a 1-2 record, including a stunning loss to previously winless Texas Southern that put a huge dent in the team’s tournament aspirations.

Fortunately, the Orange and Blue bounced back in its most recent matchup with the North Florida Ospreys, though the team still showed some cracks in its armor that need to be addressed. Today, they face the Maryland Terrapins, who enter the game with a 5-4 record (0-1 Big Ten) having lost three in a row. According to the NET rankings, UF currently stands at No. 44 while UM is way down at No. 157.

On Sunday morning, the Tipico Sportsbook favored the Gators by 4.5-points over the Terrapins while the over/under is set at 136.5. The money lines for Florida and Maryland are minus-230 and plus-180, respectively, as of 10 a.m. EST.

Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. EST on Sunday inside the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York. The game will be broadcast by the Big Ten Network, livestreamed on the Fox Sports app and can be heard on the Gators IMG Sports Network.

University of Maryland becomes first Big Ten school to partner with a sportsbook

Maryland becomes the second university with a deal with PointsBet.

The University of Maryland has become the first Big Ten school to partner with a sportsbook after signing a multi-year deal with PointsBet, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

The deal is worth seven figures, as reported by ESPN’s David Purdham, and it will allow for PointsBet signage to be shown in and around the university’s XFINITY Center and Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. PoinstBet will also be featured across Maryland’s digital channels and sports radio broadcasts, according to Sports Business Journal.

The deal also includes a philanthropic component yet to be announced and will provide education on responsible gambling for university staff, students and fans.

After an arduous battle among state leaders to legalize sports betting in Maryland, the state’s market is expected to finally open at casinos this week. That includes gambling on in-state colleges and universities.

University of Maryland joins University of Colorado as PointsBet partners. Other schools with sports betting partnerships include LSU, UNLV and University of Denver.

Big Ten football recruiting rankings as of December 1

Here is what the Big Ten football recruiting rankings look like two weeks from the early signing period

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, we’re not talking about the holiday season. Instead, we’re talking about the early signing period in college football! December is here and the early signing period is just two weeks away for college football, and Penn State continues to lead the Big Ten in the national recruiting rankings.

We didn’t take a look at the Big Ten football recruiting rankings in November due to some vacation plans putting that on the shelf (and quite franking, I forgot to organize it when I returned), so our ranking movement will be reflective of how the national recruiting rankings have shifted since October 1. Overall, there hasn’t been much movement within the Big Ten pecking order, and the national rankings haven’t shifted too dramatically on the past two months.

Penn State is no longer the top-ranked team in the nation, which was to be expected as Georgia and Alabama made their expected surges to the top of the rankings (which sounds familiar), and Texas A&M and Notre Dame have maneuvered their way in front of the Nittany Lions as well. And don’t look now, but Ohio State is just behind Penn State in the recruiting rankings as well.

With the early signing period nearly upon us, here is a look at how the Big Ten recruiting rankings for the Class of 2022 look according to the team composite rankings provided by 247 Sports.

Things you might not have known from Michigan football’s win over Maryland

Some factoids you definitely should know about the game!

Michigan took it to Maryland over and over and over again on Saturday, as the away crowd had more of a home flavor. The 24-3 halftime lead ballooned to a 59-18 drubbing, with the Wolverines flexing even as the Terps kept pushing and finding ways to drive the field.

Certainly, if you watched the game, you don’t know the whole story, however.

The folks over at MGoBlue.com put together a list of factoids and stats from the game that flesh it out a little bit more. Here are some things you need to know about the big (by score) maize and blue victory.

Notes/tidbits

  • In the 10th all-time meeting between these two programs, U-M improved to 9-1 and 4-0 at Maryland Stadium. Since Maryland joined the Big Ten Conference in 2014, U-M is 6-1 with six consecutive wins.
  • It was U-M’s second time scoring 59 points on Maryland (2016: 59 points). The only Big Ten game that has seen U-M score more points was a 78-0 win over Rutgers that same season.
  • U-M limited the Terrapins to 3-14 on third down.
  • The Wolverines were 6-of-6 in the red zone (five touchdowns, one field goal).
  • Running back Hassan Haskins reached the 1,000-yard mark for the season with his fourth carry of the game. Haskins is the 22nd ball carrier in program history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a single season and marks the 34th occasion overall.
  • Haskins scored twice on the ground, giving him a year-long total of 13.
  • Quarterback Cade McNamara has thrown multiple touchdowns in four straight games (9:1 TD:INT in that span).
  • With his 77-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Edwards, McNamara has hit four different pass-catchers for touchdown receptions of 70-plus yards this season (Andrel Anthony, Cornelius Johnson, Ronnie Bell),
  • For the third week in a row, a U-M tight end found the end zone. The game’s first score was a two-yard pass from McNamara to Luke Schoonmaker.
  • Wide receiver Mike Sainristil’s second-quarter touchdown catch was the fifth of his career and the second of the 2021 season. It was Sainristil’s first career touchdown from quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
  • Running back Donovan Edwards set a new career-high in touches (13), aided by a career day in the receiving game, ending with 10 receptions for 170 yards. Edwards is the second Wolverine with an eight-catch game this year (Erick All, 10 catches at Michigan State).
  • Edwards’ 77-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter marked the (second) longest play from scrimmage by any Wolverine this season. He finished the game with the highest single-game receiving total of any U-M player so far this season (170 yards)
  • U-M has forced at least one turnover defensively in nine consecutive games, with multiple turnovers in five games. Defensive back DJ Turner intercepted his second career pass in the third quarter of today’s game.
  • Kicker Jake Moody eclipsed 100 points on the season with his seven PATs and one field goal. Moody has converted on 17 of his last 18 field goal attempts.
  • With touchdowns on offense, defense and in the return game, U-M scored in all three phases for the first time since Oct. 10, 2015, against Northwestern. Today’s touchdowns are U-M’s first of the season on special teams and defense.
  • A.J. Henning took a reverse lateral from Michael Barrett on a late-third quarter kickoff return following Maryland’s first touchdown. Henning took the ball 80 yards up the Michigan sideline for U-M’s first kickoff return touchdown this season and the first since Giles Jackson (at Rutgers) in 2020.
  • Quarterbacks Dan Villari and Alan Bowman saw relief action in the fourth quarter, resulting in the first career reception for wide receiver Will Rolapp.
