Maryland’s Jakorian Bennett talks Rutgers offense, Terps bowl ambitions

Rutgers football will present some issues for Maryland’s defense, so says Jakorian Bennett.

[mm-video type=video id=01fn7d6zm7hyzjb8syf9 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fn7d6zm7hyzjb8syf9/01fn7d6zm7hyzjb8syf9-c73ce13c2aa6dc78da76d96e1ea6ddce.jpg]

Jakorian Bennett says that the process of learning about Rutgers offense is ongoing, but he talked about a team that will try to take Maryland’s defense out of their comfort zone.

The Maryland senior defensive back sees Rutgers as a team that tries to confuse opposing defenses, something that he and his Maryland teammates will need to keep an eye on. This Saturday, Maryland (5-6, 2-6 Big Ten) will play at Rutgers (5-6, 2-6 Big Ten).

“With Rutgers, they do a lot of things on offense. A lot of motions, shifts. They just try to get us to change our defense and stuff like that,” Bennett told reporters on Tuesday.

“We’ll go out there and do our adjustments, continue to watch film, pick up tips and things that they’re going to try to do to help us win. They’re a good team.”

Bennett has been solid this year, with 19 total tackles, two interceptions and 10 passes defended.

He is in his second season at Maryland, having transferred from a junior college last season.

Like Rutgers, this Maryland team needs a win in their regular-season finale to become bowl eligible.

“The vibe has been good, we’re just trying to stay together, get that sixth win and do whatever we got to do,” Bennett said. “Keep working, keep practicing. Stay in the field room, do whatever we have to do to get that sixth win. The vibe is good, stay and strong, stand committed. Just trying to go out there and get that sixth win.”

Maryland head coach Mike Locksley embraces bowl talk

On Monday, Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano didn’t want to talk about possible bowl eligibility, saying he wanted to keep his team’s focus solely on Saturday’s opponent. That opponent’s head coach, however, is embracing the bowl talk.

The formula is simple for Rutgers and Maryland on Saturday: the winner goes to a bowl game. Both teams are 5-6 (2-6 Big Ten) heading into the final week of the regular season. The winner gets a bowl game and the loser is likely left out.

When Schiano was asked about the possibility of claiming bowl eligibility, he deferred to answer, saying that if his team isn’t focused on beating Maryland then anything else won’t matter. Locksley was asked about his team’s recent rough stretch and how Saturday presents an opportunity to play for something meaningful:

“Yeah, I mean, I think you hit it right on its head – when you have a chance to compete for bowl eligibility and you’re at the last part of your season,” Locksley told reporters on Tuesday.

“That’s something we haven’t had around here for some time, where it is win go home. So, as I told them yesterday, if I have to motivate you to – if I got to say some things to motivate you to go out and put the work in this week, that’s necessary to prepare you to go up to Rutgers and play to our ability – then this is not the team I thought we have. But I can tell you that is that team and this team continues to work.”

Maryland has lost their last three games and five of their last six games. They did have a very strong start to the season including a solid 30-24 win over West Virginia in their opener.

On Saturday, they lost 59-18 at home to Michigan.

Rutgers had a tough weekend as well, with their offense struggling in a 28-0 loss at Penn State.

Not only will Rutgers play a very good Maryland team this Saturday, but they have to battle a flu bug that has cut through their team this past week.

On Monday, head coach Greg Schiano said that the flu hit his team hard ahead of this past weekend’s game at Penn State. Now, his program is again having to fight through these health issues with the stakes high for the Scarlet Knights.

With a win against Maryland, Schiano’s program would be bowl eligible for the first time since 2014. There is never a convenient time for the flu, but this certainly is not ideal for Rutgers lading up to their biggest game of the season.

“We’re getting ready obviously for Maryland. It’s a big game for a lot of reasons. We’re up against it a little bit, we had a flu bug going through the team all last week. It’s continuing on, so it is something that we’re battling now. It was pretty bad last week,” Schiano told reporters on Monday.

“We had a bunch of guys we weren’t sure how it was going to go leading up to game time. Unfortunately, I feel like we’re going to be in that similar situation. When it comes to injuries, we came out of the game pretty well except for the continued outbreak of flu.”

Rutgers (5-6, 2-6 Big Ten) lost 28-0 at Penn State on Saturday in a game where the offense managed just 10 first downs and 160 yards of total offense. Maryland (5-6, 2-6 Big Ten) took their own bumps and lumps in a 59-18 loss to Michigan.

Michigan vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

The Maryland defense is having a few issues.

It doesn’t do enough to take the ball away, it doesn’t come up with third down stops, and the pass defense isn’t strong enough.

Michigan is more consistent than sensational. It can hit the big play at the right time – it did just that late against Penn State – but it’s goal it to start rolling and keep on pounding away.

The running game has been a wee bit off over the last few weeks, but it should get going for close to 200 yards in this, the passing attack is moving the chains, and most importantly this week, the other side of the ball gets the job done against the pass.

Maryland can sort of run, but it has to throw to get things going. Michigan has yet to give up a 300-yard day, it doesn’t allow a whole lot of deep shots, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Maryland Will Win

Really, what quarterback has Michigan faced so far?

Penn State’s Sean Clifford is fine, and Jahan Dotson and the receiving corps are great, and the Wolverines allowed 223 yards last week. That’s about it for the solid passers.

Maryland has to keep things moving with its midrange throws. Taulia Tagovailoa might have a few issues with picks, but he’s been bombing away, hitting close to 70% of his throws on the year with close to 1,200 yards and five scores over the last three games.

As long as he’s able to hit his quick shots and get the ball out of his hands in a hurry, the O will move.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the Maryland offense will get its passing yards, but the defense won’t be able to handle the grind.

Michigan will seem like it always has the ball – it should control the clock for well over 35 minutes – and slow and steady will win the race. It’s not going to be the most impressive of performances overall – at least until late – but it’ll be the win the team needs to set up the showdown next week against the Buckeyes for the Big Ten East title.

Rutgers final game of the regular season is getting the noon kickoff treatment. The Big Ten announced on Saturday that Maryland at Rutgers on Nov. 27 will be at noon.

The game will air on the Big Ten Network.

It could well be a pivotal game for Rutgers (5-5, 2-5 Big Ten) as they look to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2014. The Scarlet Knights need one win to be locked-in for a bowl game.

The Scarlet Knights have won two of their last three games, coming off a 38-3 win at Indiana over the weekend. But they face a tough game at Penn State on Saturday.

Maryland is also 5-5 (2-5 Big Ten) and has gone through a tough part of their schedule. They face No. 6 Michigan on Saturday.

The Terrapins have had a brutal stretch of games against quality opponents, losing five of their last six games. The average margin of victory in those five losses has been by 28 points.

Rutgers and Maryland have both beaten Illinois and Indiana this season.

Michigan State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Maryland is good against the bad teams, and AWFUL against the good ones – at least since the 30-24 win over West Virginia to start the season.

There’s no shame in losing to Ohio State, or Minnesota, or Iowa or Penn State, but the Terps were collectively annihilated in all four games by a combined score of 182-61, and they slipped by Illinois and had no problems getting by Howard, or Indiana, or Kent State.

There’s no running game for the Spartans to worry about, and the defense has been getting crushed over the last six games allowing way over 400 yards in each one.

This is the game to get the ground attack back and rolling. However …
College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Maryland Will Win

The Michigan State pass defense is about to get hammered.

There were issues here and there before the last few weeks – WKU throws on everyone, so the 488 yards weren’t a big deal, and Miami’s D’Eriq King went off – but the Spartans have struggled allowing 942 passing yards over the last two games.

No, Maryland’s offense isn’t consistent, but Taulia Tagovailoa has been good, the passing game should hit 300 yards, and the O should keep the pressure on, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Kenneth Walker is about to have a day.

The Michigan State defense will once again look mediocre, but Walker will run for well over 100 yards, the Spartan offense will take over as the game goes on, and Maryland will misfire just enough – helped by three turnovers – to let the game get out of hand in the second half.

Penn State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

Maryland doesn’t run well. It hasn’t hit 100 yards in any of the last four games, and that means the offense has to bomb away to have any shot. That goes right into the teeth of the Penn State defense.

The Nittany Lion pass D should be terrific. The secondary has a ton of talent, the pass rush should be good enough, and it all should work with a whole bunch of plays in the backfield.

Maryland is 5-0 when it throws for over 300 yards, and 0-3 when it doesn’t get there. Penn State has only given up over 200 yards three times and over 300 yards once. CJ Stroud and Ohio State got to 305 passing yards last week, and that was a strain.

If Taulia Tagovailoa has to throw and throw some more to get that many yards, the picks will eventually follow.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Maryland Will Win

The Penn State running game has been a struggle.

It hasn’t hit 100 yards in five of the eight games, it only got to 200 yards against Villanova and Ball State, and relying on a consistent passing game with this attack is a concern.

The Maryland defense hasn’t been anything special, but it has a good enough pass rush to be a bother and it should be just effective enough to help control the clock.

The Terp offense doesn’t grind, but it should be able to own the time of possession battle against the quick-paced Penn State attack.

Maryland wouldn’t mind making this a bit of an up-and-down shootout, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

On a three-game losing streak, Penn State should finally be able to settle in a bit and play a relatively comfortable game.

The D shouldn’t have anything to worry about against the Maryland ground attack, and the offensive side should be able to hit the midrange plays just enough to keep everything moving.

Maryland is good against the mediocre and awful against the good teams. Penn State is a good team.
