Former Buff Marvin Ham II lands in Sun Belt Conference

Marvin Ham II will be continuing his college career in the Sun Belt Conference

Former Colorado football linebacker Marvin Ham II announced his commitment to the Sun Belt Conference’s Arkansas State Red Wolves on Thursday.

Ham played under four head coaches — Mel Tucker, Karl Dorrell, interim Mike Sanford and Deion Sanders — in five years at Colorado before entering the transfer portal in November. He wrapped his Buffs career with 66 total tackles, 2.5 TFLs and one sack in 40 games played, including 10 starts.

One of the few holdovers from CU’s 2022 team, the Michigan native started at linebacker in the Buffs’ first three games last season and recorded a career-high 10 tackles against TCU. Colorado listed Ham at 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds.

Arkansas State went 6-7 last season with a loss to Northern Illinois in the Cramton Bowl. According to 247Sports, the Red Wolves have added 16 transfers this offseason, including the four-star Ham.

Longtime CU Buffs linebacker Marvin Ham II to enter NCAA transfer portal

A longtime Buff announced he’ll be entering the transfer portal

The hits keep coming for Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes. After a flurry of decommitments, linebacker Marvin Ham II announced on Tuesday that he’ll be entering the NCAA transfer portal to explore other options around the country.

Ham, a native of Belleville, Michigan, just completed his redshirt junior season with Colorado, totaling 36 tackles and one sack during the 2023 campaign. Ham competed in a total of 32 games throughout his Buffs career and has just one season of college eligibility remaining.

In his announcement, Ham thanked the Colorado fans, calling them “the best fans in the land.” The veteran linebacker had been with the Buffs since 2019.

Ham joins tight end Caleb Fauria as Colorado players to enter the transfer portal so far this offseason.

Trevor Woods, Marvin Ham II among CU holdovers who could lead in 2023

.@Zach_Segars of @MileHighSports sees both Trevor Woods and Marvin Ham II as returning players who could lead for the 2023 #cubuffs

The Buffaloes’ roster has been in a constant state of change since December of last year when Deion Sanders was hired as head coach. Colorado has added new players from essentially every level, including class of 2023 signees and transfers from the FBS, FCS and JUCO divisions. With this many new faces, players have had to step up and lead the team in the right direction.

It seems like the Buffs are in good hands, though. Prior to the spring game, Coach Prime invited a group of players to lay down the expectations for each of their respective position groups. If these leaders can hit the ground running and get their position groups to play at a high level, then fans could be in for a pleasant surprise in 2023.

We asked Zach Segars of Mile High Sports to give us his thoughts on which players will lead the 2023 Buffs:

On offense, Shedeur Sanders is an easy bet as the starting quarterback and one of the team’s faces. I’d also keep an eye on Xavier Weaver, who was an offensive leader for USF during his time in Tampa. Defense is a more difficult projection. (Marvin) Ham II and (LaVonta) Bentley are both players to watch, as they starred in the spring and play LB. Trevor Woods is another name to watch, and, like Ham, he’s a carryover for the program, which could give him a leg up. Also, although he doesn’t seem like the most vocal leader, Travis Hunter has to be spotlighted here. He’s the perfect lead by example type with his lunch pail ethos and sky-high talent.

Colorado football state of the position: Outside Linebackers

Colorado’s outside linebackers will play a big role in 2022

CU is being tricky this year with its position groupings. The Buffs have a group of defensive ends we previewed last week listed as outside linebackers, while all of the linebackers are listed as inside linebackers. So, we could see some players moving around a bit.

Regardless, we will be highlighting the listed inside linebackers who we believe will be playing more on the outside, got it? As we highlighted earlier this month, the 4-3 alignment utilizes two outside linebackers, a SAM (a strong side LB that moves with the tight end) and a WILL (a weak side LB that positions himself away from the TE).

Let’s dig in with our projected depth chart coming first followed by some analysis:
