May PlayStation Showcase recap: Spider-Man, AC Mirage, and more

The May PlayStation Showcase has come and gone, with Spider-Man 2, Dragon’s Dogma, Metal Gear, Assassin’s Creed, and a whole lot more

The May PlayStation Showcase has come and gone, bringing with it over 60 minutes of announcements, reveals, trailers, and teases for upcoming PS5 games. While we might not have gotten everything we expected – no Spider-Man 2 release date, for example – the showcase highlighted a broad range of games from Sony’s first-party studios and third parties alike. Metal Gear is back, Bungie is reviving a classic, and Square Enix is doing something that looks a lot like Splatoon.

Here’s everything you might have missed from the May PlayStation Showcase.

New Spider-Man 2 trailer highlights darker tone – but no release date

Sony showcased a lengthy new Soider-Man 2 trailer during the May State of Play with gameplay galore, but no release date for the Marvel game

Sony showcased a lengthy new Spider-Man 2 trailer during the May State of Play, and while it shows a lot of what to expect from the Marvel game, there’s still no Spider-Man 2 release date. The trailer opens with a lengthy cinematic that eventually reveals the main villain – and it isn’t Venom.

It’s Kraven, an unhinged hunter who first debuted in 1964 and vowed to capture Spider-Man to prove he’s the greatest hunter of them all. Except this time, apparently, he’s also trying to catch a giant lizard monster who’s rampaging through New York City, while Peter Parker is blending in as a villain and has a bit of an angry streak as well.

There’s a lot going on, and while much of the action looks familiar – setpiece chase scenes and lots of banter, for example – it looks like Spider-Man 2 is dipping its toes into a few other genres. One scene starring Miles involves a careful stealth segment, and there’s even a tinge of horror built into some of the game’s environments.

Peter and Miles get plenty of new abilities and handy gadgets as well, including a device that reaches out and ensnares several foes in webs and some Venom-like powers for Peter.

How all this comes together, we’ll eventually find out in fall 2023. Despite the Venom voice actor’s belief that Spider-Man 2 will launch on PS5 in September, Insomniac is still sticking to a general fall release frame.

How to watch the May PlayStation State of Play

Sony’s latest State of Play presentation is coming up fast, with promises of new IP and more in a showcase that lasts more than an hour

Update: May 24, 2023

If you missed the presentation, check out our PlayStation Showcase recap!

Original Story

Sony’s latest State of Play presentation is coming up fast, with promises of new IP and more in a showcase set to last more than an hour. The PS5 maker is keeping quiet about what we can expect from the presentation, only teasing new creations from PlayStation Studios, though it’s likely we’ll see updates on some known quantities as well, including Spider-Man 2 and that Final Fantasy 16 demo Square Enix keeps teasing.

The showcase’s timing is a bit awkward for anyone who doesn’t live in the United States, but as ever, Sony will post the video on demand after the showcase ends, with trailers for everything highlighted during the presentation.

Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 has a free prequel comic available now

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac is still a ways off, but you can catch up with Peter and Miles thanks to a new Spider-Man 2 prequel

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac is still a ways off, but you can catch up with Peter and Miles thanks to a new Spider-Man 2 prequel comic. The comic from GamerVerse, called just Spider-Man 2, is available to read for free online, and it covers some of the arachnid duo’s exploits between the time of Miles Morales and whatever Insomniac has planned for Spider-Man 2.

The GamerVerse Spider-Man 2 is a full-length comic book that alternates between Peter and Miles as their everyday selves and as their heroic counterparts, with a few little tidbits on the side about their friends. There’s not much of a hint about what might lie in store in Insomniac’s Marvel game, though. The villain of the piece – a magic-obsessed thug with a penchant for stealing – and his motivations seem like a self-contained story.

It’s a nice jaunt back into the Spiderverse while we wait for Spider-Man 2 the game. When that might release is anyone’s guess. Insomniac said the PS5 game will launch sometime in fall 2023, and while Venom voice actor Tony Todd suggested a September date with commercials running in August, that was an accidental leak. Even if it were true at one point, Insomniac’s plans might have changed since Todd’s involvement with the project.

Either way, PlayStation and its studios are set to attend Summer Game Fest 2023, so we’ll probably see at least a new Spider-Man 2 trailer if nothing else.

Spider-Man 2 might launch on PS5 this September, says Venom actor

Tony Todd thinks the highly-anticipated sequel will be out this fall.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could come out this fall – at least, that’s what actor Tony Todd says.

To recap: Insomniac Games announced that Todd would play Venom during the reveal of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in 2021. There’s been very little information on the game since, aside from endless speculation as to when it might launch.

On Tuesday, Todd might’ve let the release window slip while responding to a fan asking about when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 might come out.

“Looks like September! Massive publicity [is] coming in august,” Todd said on Twitter. “Commercials start dropping in august, so I’m told. Hold on to your … and hold [your] breath! Gonna be necessary.”

Remember that neither Insomniac Games nor PlayStation has given us any launch date yet, so Todd might’ve spilled the beans ahead of a big reveal. However, it aligns with what actor Yuri Lowenthal, who plays Peter Parker in these games, hinted at several weeks ago – along with the release date tease from Insomniac last December.

We still don’t know too much about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 other than it’ll allegedly be much darker than the original game. It’s also a PS5 exclusive (for now) and will probably remain that way for some time.

Spider-Man 2 actor says ‘astonishing’ sequel should release this fall

‘I know they’re confident about their release date,’ says Yuri Lowenthal.

It’s increasingly looking as though Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch on PS5 sometime this fall – at least, that’s what actor Yuri Lowenthal believes.

Lowenthal, best known for his role as Spider-Man and Peter Parker in the PS4 game, recently told Comic Book Movie that he believes the sequel will be out at some point in 2023.

“I’ve still got a little bit to do. It’s a massive game so I’m still doing a little bit of work,” Lowenthal said. “I know they’re confident about their release date and Insomniac has always been good about that. Obviously, I can’t really talk about the game much, but I will tell you that it’s astonishing.”

This lines up with what developer Insomniac Games teased about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releasing this year. Specifics are, naturally, still up in the air – though that’s pretty common with massive titles. Lowenthal sounds quite jazzed about what’s coming, that’s for sure.

“I’m so excited for you to play it. They know they’ve got big shoes to fill from the last two games and they’ve done it [Laughs],” Lowenthal continues. “I just can’t wait for people to play it.”

It also sounds like Lowenthal’s take on the character will be in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which releases on June 2, 2022.

Insomniac announces Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 release frame

The Spider-Man 2 release date just got a bit closer, as Insomniac announced the long-awaited sequel will release in late 2023

We might not have a firm Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 release date yet, but Insomniac narrowed it down a bit with a release time frame. Spider-Man 2 will launch on PS5 sometime in fall 2023. That narrows it down a bit, since previously, we only knew it was slated for 2023 in general.

The news comes in a new PlayStation Blog post, where Insomniac’s creative director, Bryan Intihar, also shared a brief message.

“What a year it’s been for PlayStation Studios; here at Insomniac Games we’ve been in absolute awe of the work of our peers. Congrats to everyone on a successful 2022… and here’s to next year being just as exciting as we continue to get Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ready for release next fall.”

Spider-Man 2 takes place after Insomniac’s first web-slinging game and the Miles Morales half-sequel, starring both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they face a new set of threats to the city.

That’s about it for new updates, though. Insomniac didn’t let slip any new details about Spider-Man 2. There’s no new trailer yet and no indication when PlayStation might share more details, but with the PS5’s lineup looking rather slim for the first part of the year, a showcase or some other deep dive into the publisher’s plans is looking increasingly more likely as we head into 2023.

Meanwhile, you can catch a glimpse of Insomniac’s take on Spider-Man in the upcoming Across the Spider-Verse movie.

Spider-Man 2 is still coming out in 2023, according to Insomniac Games

PS5 owners can look forward to more Spider-Man next year.

Quite some time has gone by since we’ve heard anything about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. There hasn’t even been a trailer since the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase, prompting some concern that it isn’t coming out in 2023 anymore — though, as first spotted by DaulShockers, developer Insomniac Games insists there’s nothing to worry about.

“Don’t [worry],” Insomniac said on Twitter in response to a fan. “We’re making good progress, and it’s still slated for 2023. Showing games takes time, effort, resources, and coordination.”

With how many high-profile game delays there’s been in the past few months, it’s understandable that fans might be a little concerned something is up with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. We all need reassurance now and then!

Insomniac Games has also been busy with Spider-Man Remastered’s stellar PC port, with the Miles Morales spinoff landing on PC soon too. Both ports support much higher resolutions and graphical options than the console versions, so it might be worth checking out if you have a solid desktop or laptop. There’s no extra content, unfortunately.

Insomniac Games is also working on Marvel’s Wolverine, which hasn’t had a development update since last fall, either. These things take time, though — we’ll almost certainly hear more about it soon enough.

Spider-Man is coming to ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ at long last

The wall-crawler is (nearly) here!

Spider-Man is finally heading to Marvel’s Avengers soon, but the wall-crawler is exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

On Nov. 30, the Spider-Man: With Great Power Hero Event will add the web-slinger to Marvel’s Avengers — for everyone that owns the game on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, that is. Yup, Spider-Man is only on Sony consoles. Sorry, Xbox and PC players!

The storyline for Spider-Man: With Great Power Hero Event  involves Peter Parker uncovering a plan by the Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM) mega-corporation to get new technology that’ll beef up its Synthroid army and position the organization as a global threat. Peter partners with Ms. Marvel and Black Widow to hopefully end AIM’s nefarious plans while keeping his secret identity intact, of course!

There’s no trailer for the Spider-Man: With Great Power Hero Event yet, but Crystal Dynamics did outline some of the quality of live improvements coming soon.

No matter if you’re on PlayStation or not, patch 2.2 will introduce a bunch of stuff like the four-player Klaw Raid and some system improvements, including:

  • The maximum power level will increase from 150 to 175.
  • Gear recycling allows players to upgrade whatever they have equipped with more powerful equipment they find
  • Shipments let players attain certain cosmetics, resources, and items via gameplay. Crystal Dynamics will elaborate more on how that’ll work soon.
  • Per-Hero Weekly Objectives finally lets players farm challenges on a per-hero basis rather than locking progression across the account.

It sounds like patch 2.2 will be a healthy update for Marvel’s Avengers, which is what it desperately needs right now. Square Enix’s president called the game a disappointment recently, and several controversial consumable items were taken off the in-game shop due to fan outrage

While Spider-Man being exclusive to PlayStation is odd, it’s not shocking considering that Sony still owns the character. It’s unclear if this incarnation of the web-head will be from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2  by Insomniac or not, but we’ll find out soon. Perhaps a return of everyone’s favorite Spidey voice actor Yuri Lowenthal is looming? We can only hope.

Director of ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ says ‘Spider-Verse’ was a big inspiration

Well, yeah, it’s one of the best superhero flicks ever.

Everyone loves Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, including the folks over at Insomniac Games. Brian Horton, creative director on Marvel’s  Spider-Man: Miles Morales, said the Oscar-winning film had a tremendously positive impact on the development team’s work.

During a creative roundtable discussing the character of Miles Morales, Horton explains to Into The Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey along with screenwriter Phil lord and producer Chris Miller how the movie influenced Insomniac’s work on the PlayStation 5 launch title.

“You guys influenced us tremendously,” Horton said. “When we saw the film, we had already developed a bit of story for what our game would be, but we were heartened and freaked out by how good of a story you guys told with Miles. All the small details that you brought into his character that were cultural touchstones, but also just human moments, really helped us raise our game.”

Check out a video of the entire roundtable for yourself below.

You can tell it’s a heartfelt sentiment from Horton too, and rightfully so. Considering Miles Morales will also be in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, I can’t help but wonder if we’ll see more Spider-Verse DNA in that game too.
