Rutgers basketball recruit Trey McKenney is making a case to be the nation’s top player in the ’25 class

Trey McKenney has a huge showing in Michigan’s high school championship game.

Remember the name Trey McKenney. He has the potential to be a very special player.

One the top recruits in the nation, McKenney is playing at a peak performance in the Michigan state playoffs. He has been offered by Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ole Miss, Indiana, MichiganMichigan State, Rutgers and TCU among others.

McKenney, a class of 2025 guard from St. Mary’s (Flint, Michigan), is a dynamic scorer who can stretch the court. A five-star recruit according to ESPN and Rivals, McKenney is as complete of a guard as there is in his class.

He can score from outside but also has the ability to drive to the rim and get points. In addition, he is a good distributor who is a solid defender.

In the On3 Industry Rankings, he is the No. 13 player in the nation.

This weekend, McKenney scored 32 points to lead St. Mary’s to a state title:

 

McKenney is a priority recruit for Rutgers and one that the Scarlet Knights got in on early.

Over the summer, McKenney spoke with Rutgers Wire. He cited his relationship with Rutgers assistant Marlon Williamson (aka ‘Coach Smoke’) as one reason why the Scarlet Knights are standing out in his recruitment:

“I like him. He brings a kind of energy to Rutgers. I like what he stands for,” McKenney said in August during an interview with Rutgers Wire.

“He’s a good person, everything isn’t about basketball.”

Five-star guard Brandon McCoy talks about his recent Rutgers basketball offer.

Offered last week by Rutgers basketball, California guard Brandon McCoy Jr. is starting to develop a connection and understanding with the Big Ten program. A class of 2026 recruit, McCoy is poised to continue pulling in offers as his recruitment shows no signs of slowing down.

A guard at St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA), McCoy has a recruitment that is turning national. Within the past few weeks, McCoy had been offered by Cal and Washington State. They join a recruitment that includes programs such as Arizona State, Louisville and Oregon among others.

McCoy was offered by Rutgers on July 28, pulling in an offer from assistant coach Marlon Williamson.

This past season as a freshman, McCoy averaged 8.6 points and 4.5 assists per game. There is substantial buzz about McCoy as ESPN ranks him as a five-star recruit and the No. 15 player in the nation in the 2026 class.

Moving coasts could be a part of his recruitment, with McCoy saying that “An East Coast school is definitely a possibility.”

Marlon Williamson to join Rutgers men’s basketball as assistant coach

Rutgers basketball will hire Marlon Williamson to fill their assistant coaching vacancy after the departure of former coach Karl Hobbs.

Rutgers men’s basketball will hire Marlon Williamson to fill their assistant coaching vacancy after the departure of former assistant coach Karl Hobbs. Rutgers has ended their assistant coaching search as head coach Steve Pikiell elected to hire Williamson to his 2023-2024 coaching staff.

Jerry Carino from the Asbury Park Press broke the news on early Monday afternoon.

Williamson started his college coaching career at the University of Massachusetts as an assistant coach from 2012 to 2014. While at Massachusetts, Williamson guided the Minutemen to a 45-21 record and back-to-back postseason appearances. In the 2013-14 season, the Minutemen earned their first NCAA Tournament bid in 16 seasons, finishing with a 24-9 overall record (10-6 Atlantic 10 Conference).

After the 2014 season, Williamson joined the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant coach from 2014 to 2016. Williams has ties with Rutgers’ current assistant coach Brandin Knight, both coaching together at Pittsburgh.

Williamson’s most extended coaching stay came from 2016 to 2021, coaching at LIU-Brooklyn as an assistant coach.

For the past two seasons, Williamson coached as an assistant coach at Central Michigan. While coaching at Central Michigan, Williamson’s responsibilities were recruiting, game preparation, and on-floor coaching. Rutgers’new assistant coach is known as a top-notcher recruiter with ties throughout Michigan, the Midwest, and the Eastcoast.

Williamson, who is from Detroit, has experience playing college basketball. From 1999 to 2003, Williamson earned four letters at Youngstown State. He served as the team captain, averaging 8.1 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.2 steals per game in 99 career games. As a senior, Williamson got named the Penguins’ Most Valuable Player. He recorded 379 points, 199 assists, and 45 3-pointers for his career.

Williamson will join T.J. Thompson and Brandin Knight as assistant coaches for Rutgers’ 2023-2024 coaching staff.
