Analyzing Colts’ snap counts from 30-18 win over 49ers

Taking a look at the snap counts from the Colts’ 30-18 win over the 49ers in Week 7.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-4) gutted out a 30-18 victory over the San Francisco 49ers (2-4) on Sunday night at Levi’s Stadium.

Despite the horrible weather conditions, the Colts ground their way to their third win over the last four games. It took a complete effort of winning the turnover battle while hitting some explosive plays on the offensive side of the ball.

Now, it’s time to take a look at the snap counts from the Week 7 win:

Offense

Analysis

  • With T.Y. Hilton (quad) inactive and Parris Campbell on injured reserve, it was the Michael Pittman Jr. show yet again. He only logged a 15.3% target share but was on the field for 91% of the snaps.
  • Meanwhile, Ashton Dulin served as the WR3 in the rotation with 63% of the snaps played.
  • It may have just been a one-off but Chris Reed played 65% of the snaps at right guard while starter Mark Glowinski played 35% of the snaps. We knew they would rotate, but it will be interesting if a change is being made.
  • In the backfield, Jonathan Taylor played 69% of the snaps followed by 19% for Nyheim Hines and 6% for Marlon Mack. It’s clearly a two-headed backfield and even then, it’s still Taylor’s room.
  • Rookie TE Kylen Granson continues to be buried on the depth chart behind Mo Alie-Cox and Jack Doyle.

Defense

Analysis

  • With Julian Blackmon out for the season due to a torn Achilles, the majority of safety snaps were given to Andrew Sendejo, who played 79% while George Odum filled in the other 21%.
  • Even with Kemoko Turay inactive, DE Ben Banogu didn’t have a single snap on defense.
  • With a run-heavy script and a thin secondary, the Colts leaned on their linebackers a bit more. Zaire Franklin played 30% of the snaps—his second-highest mark of the season—while E.J. Speed’s 14% snap share was a season-high.
  • CB BoPete Keyes played four special teams snaps (14%) before exiting the game with a hamstring injury.

Report: Saints explored trade for Colts RB Marlon Mack

The New Orleans Saints made ‘preliminary inquiries’ into a trade for Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack, per USA TODAY’s Josina Anderson:

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”LysEWIh5ze-1566462-7498″]

It’s no secret that the New Orleans Saints have wanted to improve their depth at running back. They’ve brought in three different players after losing promising second-year pro Tony Jones Jr. to an injury, adding Devine Ozigbo to the 53-man roster behind Alvin Kamara and Dwayne Washington while signing free agents Ryquell Armstead and Lamar Miller to the practice squad.

But they might have swung a trade for another player, if the price was right. USA TODAY’s Josina Anderson reported Thursday that the Saints were among a group of teams that made “preliminary inquiries” in a trade for Indianapolis Colts backup Marlon Mack. Playing behind the uber-talented Jonathan Taylor and capable change-of-pace backs Nyhiem Hines and Taylor Wilkins (while recovering from a 2020 Achilles injury), Mack tumbled quite a bit down Indianapolis’ depth chart.

Now 25 and playing out the final year of his contract (which carries a miniscule salary cap charge for any team that acquires him), Mack has totaled 564 carries for 2,480 rushing yards and 20 touchdown runs in the NFL. He’s also caught 57 of 84 career targets for another 448 receiving yards, catching a pair of touchdown passes. He’s been effective when healthy and given opportunities.

It’s easy to see why the Saints and Colts couldn’t reach an agreement, though. With so many other competitors in the mix they weren’t able to add Mack on the cheap (like, say, in exchange for a seventh round pick in 2022). It’s unlikely they’ll end up cutting a deal now after bringing in so many other running backs, but you never know. The expect return of many players from injuries and suspension these next few weeks will create salary cap flexibility for the Saints ahead of the NFL’s Nov. 2 trade deadline.

Chiefs among teams with ‘preliminary inquiries’ into trade for Colts RB Marlon Mack

A new report confirms that the #Chiefs are among the teams that have made ‘preliminary inquiries’ into a trade for #Colts RB Marlon Mack.

The Kansas City Chiefs have done the leg work to see what one player would cost them in a trade ahead of the November 2 deadline.

A report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler first broke 10 days ago, saying the Chiefs had looked into a trade for Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack. A new report from USA Today’s Josina Anderson confirms that Kansas City was among the teams that had made a “preliminary inquiry” into acquiring Mack in trade.

The other teams checking in include the Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. The common denominator is that each team is dealing with some injuries at the running back position to varying degrees of seriousness.

Mack has slid down the depth chart with the emergence of teammates Jonathan Taylor and Jordan Wilkins. Mack missed the majority of the season in 2020 with an Achilles injury, but he combined for nearly 2,000 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns in the two seasons prior. He’s seen the field sparingly in 2021, recording just 97 yards on 25 attempts over four games active.

Making an inquiry into a player’s cost and availability is fairly common this time of the year. Given the timeline of Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s injury, combined with Darrel Williams having a standout performance in Week 6, it seems increasingly likely that this will be anything more than a preliminary look for Kansas City.

Panthers reportedly made inquiry on Colts RB Marlon Mack

The Panthers are reportedly amongst a handful of teams that’ve looked into a trade for Colts RB Marlon Mack.

If we’re to believe head coach Matt Rhule, the Carolina Panthers will look to redefine their offensive identity by running the ball more often.

Unfortunately for them, that won’t be as fun to do without their star rusher Christian McCaffrey for at least the next two weeks. But there may be another “Mac(k)” at running back that can help them for the time being.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, the Panthers are one of a handful of teams who have made “preliminary inquiries” into Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack. He’s also drawn interest from a few heavy hitters, including the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.

With Jonathan Taylor emerging as the featured runner for the Colts over the past two years, Mack has expressed his desire to be moved in light of his reduced role. Indianapolis and their former fourth-round pick, as far back as three weeks ago, have been seeking out a trade to accommodate his wishes.

Mack had himself a pair of standout campaigns between 2018 and 2019, rushing for a combined 1,999 yards (at an average of 4.5 yards per carry) and 17 touchdowns. Limited action in 2021 has seen him go for 97 yards on 25 attempts over four games.

Report: Teams making ‘preliminary inquiries’ on Colts’ Marlon Mack

Colts RB Marlon Mack reportedly getting preliminary trade inquiries from four teams.

As the trade deadline approaches, it seems the market for Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack is heating up.

The 25-year-old back, who is on the trading block, has reportedly generated preliminary inquiries from four teams, per Josina Anderson of USA TODAY. Those four teams are the Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.

What preliminary inquiries mean isn’t clear. They could just be calling Chris Ballard to check the price of trading for Mack. Or they could have some serious interest.

It was reported two weeks ago that the Chiefs had made some calls to the Colts about Mack after starter Clyde Edwards-Helaire went down with a knee injury. He’s still on the injured reserve list, and it isn’t clear when he’ll be back.

That’s the theme with the majority of teams looking at Mack as a potential acquisition. The Panthers, Chiefs and 49ers have all dealt with injuries to their backfield. The Saints might just be looking for depth behind Alvin Kamara, especially with backup Tony Jones on the injured reserve list.

It will be interesting to see if a deal gets done before the deadline, but the market for Mack appears to be heating up.

Report: Colts RB Marlon Mack generating trade interest from Chiefs

The Chiefs have reportedly inquired about trading for Colts RB Marlon Mack.

Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack is on the trading block and it appears there has been some interest from the Kansas City Chiefs about a possible deal.

With the trade deadline less than a month away, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Chiefs are looking into a potential trade acquisition of Mack from the Colts.

The feeling around Indianapolis is the Colts want to do right by running back Marlon Mack, who has requested a trade, but there is not much interest just yet. Things could pick up closer to the deadline, and a conditional late-round pick probably gets it done.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs have looked into Mack, too. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is expected to miss extended time because of a knee injury suffered Sunday, so perhaps they add Mack to pair with Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon.

This was reported before the news that the Chiefs placed Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the injured reserve list due to a knee sprain he suffered in the Sunday night game against the Buffalo Bills.

The Chiefs still have Darrel Williams to lead the backfield while Jerick McKinnon will be used sparingly as well. Adding Mack to the rotation would beef up the depth in the room.

Ever since Mack requested a trade after he was a healthy scratch in Week 3, he’s been getting more work as a change-of-pace back. That said, the Colts are clearly rolling with the two-headed monster that is Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines.

The Colts won’t just give Mack away for anything but it should be expected that they’ll seek a deal for either a cornerback or a late-round future draft pick.

Report: Chiefs have ‘looked into’ trade for Colts RB Marlon Mack

The NFL’s trade deadline is right around the corner and we’re starting to hear about who the #Chiefs might be interested in acquiring.

The NFL’s trade deadline for the 2021 season is less than a month away, set for Nov. 2 and a new report from ESPN says the Kansas City Chiefs are a team to watch.

At 2-3, the Chiefs’ season is off to about as rough of a start as anyone could have predicted and the schedule is only going to get more difficult. With problems on both sides of the ball to rectify, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler says the team is exploring their options.

One player they’ve looked into per Fowler is Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack, who recently requested a trade. Mack didn’t play on “Monday Night Football” in Week 5 as the Colts seem intent on trading the fifth-year halfback.

“The feeling around Indianapolis is the Colts want to do right by running back Marlon Mack, who has requested a trade, but there is not much interest just yet. Things could pick up closer to the deadline, and a conditional late-round pick probably gets it done.

. . .

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs have looked into Mack, too. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is expected to miss extended time because of a knee injury suffered Sunday, so perhaps they add Mack to pair with Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon.”

The latest on Clyde Edwards-Helaire is that his injury could only require him to miss 2-3 weeks and that the team might not even put him on injured reserve. It’s hard to imagine them going out and trading for a running back under those circumstances.

Mack is coming off a 2020 Achilles injury and is in a crowded backfield in Indy. He’s only carried the ball 20 times for 85 yards this season, but in 2019 he pounded the rock 247 times for 1,091 yards and 8 touchdowns. Other teams that have expressed interest in Mack include the Eagles, who’ve not had much production out of the running game this season.

Fowler also noted that the Chiefs have a ton of talent on the offensive line and could pursue a trade with a team like the Panthers who have a ton of talent on the defensive line. That would seem a more amicable trade given the current problems in Kansas City.

Colts’ Marlon Mack opens up about requesting for trade

Colts RB Marlon Mack opens up about requesting a trade.

Oftentimes in the NFL when a player requests for a trade, there is some disconnect between the player and organization. It can get nasty. Don’t expect that to be the case when it comes to Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack.

Three games into the 2021 season, it was clear that Mack wasn’t going to see much work in a backfield dominated by Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines. After Mack was deemed a healthy scratch in Week 3, he approached the front office with a request to be traded.

It wasn’t hostile. Mack didn’t take to the airways or vent his frustrations through the media. He simply went to the decision-makers and request they do what’s best for him. It’s clear the decision-makers agreed.

“Just had an agreement with what’s best for me. They were just all with it. They supported me 100 percent. It’s a mutual agreement I would say,” Mack told reporters Thursday.

While most expected Mack to hit free agency following a lost 2020 season due to a torn Achilles he suffered in Week 1, the former fourth-round pick re-signed with the Colts on a one-year deal to provide depth in the backfield.

Despite the Achilles injury being mostly a death knell for running backs, Mack was without limitations at training camp and looked the part of a solid back that could help the offense.

But with budding star Taylor coming off of an explosive rookie campaign and Hines being arguably the most electric player on the offensive side of the ball, there simply isn’t enough work to go around.

Mack understands the NFL is a business, and he’s not looking to become a distraction during what is already a poor start to the campaign.

“I know it’s a business, but I’ve just been working. I don’t try to be negative as much around the guys. I know I want to get out there, I’m passionate, I want to compete – go out there and help this team, but don’t let the guys see that, keep helping them, keep motivating them, staying in good spirits,” Mack said. “I’m just being patient I would say. That’s one thing I do well I think, is just try to be patient and be a good human I would say overall – have good energy around the guys and don’t be negative.”

Mack can certainly help a team in need of running back depth. We took a look at some potential trade partners the Colts could target, and there seemed to be some interest from other teams this offseason before Mack re-signed with the Colts.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Mack moving forward, but it’s likely he will be gone by the time the trade deadline arrives.

5 potential trade partners for Colts RB Marlon Mack

5 potential trade partners for Colts RB Marlon Mack.

The Indianapolis Colts are shopping for trade partners for running back Marlon Mack after the two sides agreed to seek a new home for the 25-year-old.

A fourth-round pick with the Colts in 2017, Mack was a solid starter for two seasons (2018-2019) before the team drafted Jonathan Taylor. Mack suffered a torn Achilles during the second quarter of the 2020 season opener.

He re-signed with the Colts this offseason on a one-year deal, but it’s clear there isn’t enough room for him to see consistent touches behind Taylor and Nyheim Hines.

The Colts likely wouldn’t net more than a late Day 3 pick. The trade deadline isn’t until Nov. 2 at 4:00 p.m. ET so the Colts have time to find him a new home.

Here are five potential partners the Colts could target in a trade for Mack:

The Colts and RB Marlon Mack are reportedly seeking trade partners.

The Indianapolis Colts and running back Marlon Mack are reportedly looking to find a trade partner, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

With second-year back Jonathan Taylor working as the bellcow and Nyheim Hines as the change-of-pace back, there hasn’t been much room for Mack to see playing time in the backfield.

Though nothing appears imminent on the trade front, it makes sense that the Colts would agree to trade Mack. He’s played just 13 snaps through the first three weeks of the season and was a healthy scratch in Week 3.

Mack re-signed with the Colts this offseason on a one-year deal despite coming off a torn Achilles that kept him out for all of the 2020 season.

It will be interesting to see what unfolds here and even though the compensation may not be great, this will be something to keep an eye on.
