Report: Knicks preferred Lonzo Ball over Markelle Fultz in 2017 NBA Draft

While most considered Markelle Fultz the clear No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Knicks had a different point guard ranked higher.

Heading into the 2017 NBA Draft, Markelle Fultz was seen as the clear cut No. 1 prospect, so much so that the Philadelphia 76ers memorably moved up in the draft to select him. While most considered Lonzo Ball to be the top of the second tier of prospects, none saw him as a better prospect than Fultz.

Except the New York Knicks.

Fultz’s career has certainly played out far differently than expected, but it still doesn’t change how the prospects were viewed coming into the draft. A recent piece by Marc Berman of the New York Post revealed that the Knicks were the outlier, ranking Ball over Fultz.

“The Knicks revered the playmaking point guard in the 2017 draft and rated him higher on their board than No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz. The Knicks were willing to put up with his eccentric father, LaVar Ball. After his coach-killing behavior in Los Angeles, LaVar behaved after his son was traded to New Orleans.”

In hindsight, Ball has become a more productive professional than Fultz but that is chalked up to the latter’s mysterious injury and tenure in Philadelphia. Ball himself had a rocky start to his time in Los Angeles before settling into his new role in New Orleans this season.

The Knicks, meanwhile, have continued falling further and further out of contention. In 2017, the Knicks settled for another point guard in Frank Ntilikina and have featured in the lottery each of the last two seasons.

But the Knicks are again linked to another Ball brother that is a point guard in LaMelo this year. This time around, though, the decision isn’t as obvious and the Knicks being highest on this Ball wouldn’t be quite as big a surprise.

How about a No. 1 overall NBA draft pick and likely top-2 NFL pick on same team?

Markelle Fultz was the top pick in the NBA Draft. His high school teammate Chase Young is going to be a top pick in the NFL Draft.

Talk about a wealth of talent. DeMatha High School and its legendary basketball program will add to its legacy when Chase Young is chosen in the NFL Draft Thursday.

The Ohio State defensive force played on the basketball team at the high school. One of his teammates was Markelle Fultz, who happened to go No. 1 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft out of the University of Washington

“It’s funny, we always used to talk when we were younger that I was going to be the number one pick in basketball and he would always say he was going to try to meet me up top and be the number one pick in football,” Fultz told NBA.com.

Young confirmed the conversation to Yahoo Sports.

“It does (give me chills),” Young, who attended college at Ohio State, said. “We’re two competitors. He always said he was going to go number one in the NBA Draft and I always tell him, you’re not going to be the only one. I’m going to go (at the top) of the NFL Draft.”

One high school producing a top overall pick in the NBA Draft followed by an almost-certain top-two pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Wow.

Young transferred to DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Md. as a 6-foot-3 junior. One of the people Young befriended was Fultz.

Fast forward to the end of his college career and Young decided to train for the draft in Los Angeles, where he reached out to Fultz when the Orlando Magic guard was on a road trip for a game against the Clippers.

“He told me right now is the time to have the most focus,” Young told NBA.com. “This is the time where a lot of players, they get silly or goofy and can get in trouble just having all this free time, having all these new experiences, things like that. I went to his game when they played the Lakers and met with him after and you know we just spent some time together. A lot of times when we get together, we really don’t rap about sports, we talk about life and stuff that’s going on.”

Fultz spoke about Young on a podcast with NBC Sports Washington.

On this episode of The HoopsHype Podcast, Alex Kennedy is joined by Bleacher Report’s Yaron Weitzman, who wrote the book, “Tanking to the Top: The Philadelphia 76ers and The Most Audacious Process in the History of Professional Sports.” Alex and Yaron discuss the 76ers’ tanking, behind-the-scenes stories from “The Process” and more. Time-stamps are below!

1:50: This is Yaron’s first book. He discusses how it came together and why he chose to write about the 76ers’ tanking.

3:50: Yaron writes that he initially thought he was writing the NBA version of “Moneyball,” but he quickly realized that wasn’t the case when Sam Hinkie chose not to participate. He talks about that challenge and how the book he wrote differs from the one he initially envisioned.

6:35: The Sixers didn’t participate either, which Yaron discusses.

9:40: Yaron discusses the process of writing this book and how it differed from writing articles for Bleacher Report.

12:10: In the book, Yaron writes about Allen Iverson’s departure from Philly, Doug Collins refusing to use analytics and the awful Andrew Bynum trade – all of which helped Hinkie initially get hired.

15:10: Yaron discusses Hinkie’s background. Hinkie actually got his start in the NFL, working for the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texas before moving over the NBA.

18:00: Yaron talks about some of his favorite behind-the-stories that he learned while doing the interviews and research for this book.

21:05: Many NBA agents were adamantly opposed to “The Process,” which Yaron details in the book. He discusses why agents were so unhappy and shares a story about Excel refusing to do business with Hinkie.

23:35: What was the mood like around those tanking 76ers teams? On one hand, there were no expectations. On the other hand, Yaron says that Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel butted heads behind-the-scenes.

25:25: Would those young 76ers teams have benefited from more veteran leadership at times?

29:30: In addition to finding Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, “The Process” also allowed the 76ers to find diamonds in the rough like Robert Covington, TJ McConnell and Jerami Grant among others.

31:30: Not only did Hinkie load up on draft picks, he improved Philadelphia’s technology, facility and player-development staff (which often gets overlooked).

33:30: Yaron discusses Embiid’s background. When he moved to the United States, he was shy, didn’t speak much English and had no friends. Yaron discusses his upbringing and how he was able to come out of his shell.

37:00: What are some things that Hinkie should have done differently?

40:05: One of the most interesting chapters in the book is about Markelle Fultz and his struggles after being drafted No. 1 overall. Yaron talks about what he learned while researching that chapter.

42:45: Yaron also writes about Bryan Colangelo losing his job because of burner accounts, with details about what was tweeted from the burner accounts, how those tweets came to light and much more.

46:00: Will we ever see a tank like “The Process” again?

2017 NBA Re-Draft: Is Jayson Tatum or Donovan Mitchell the No. 1 pick?

In a re-draft of the 2017 NBA Draft, who would replace Markelle Fultz as the No. 1 overall pick?

At the time, the 2017 NBA Draft was regarded as one of the deepest and most talented drafts of the last decade. In the nearly three years that have played out since, those prognostications have been proven correct.

Already, three members of that draft have earned All-Star selections and that only begins to tell the story. Jayson Tatum, Bam Adebayo and Donovan Mitchell have carved out roles as budding stars while the likes of De’Aaron Fox, Lonzo Ball, Jonathan Isaac, Lauri Markkanen and others have developed into respectable starters.

None of that dives into the bizarre story of the No. 1 pick of that draft in Markelle Fultz. Calling his stint with the Sixers injury-filled would be an understatement but it remains hard to put into words how extraordinary his time with the Sixers was. But a trade and a chance to reset has allowed him to start to return to his University of Washington form.

A re-draft of the 2017 class would certainly have Fultz far from the top pick, but which All-Star would take the top spot?

Sixers throwback: Markelle Fultz records a triple-double vs. Bucks

On this day in Philadelphia 76ers history, Markelle Fultz recorded a triple-double against the Milwaukee Bucks.

With the NBA in an indefinite hiatus due to COVID-19, we continue our day-by-day look back at the history of the Philadelphia 76ers. We continue down our path into Sixers history every day as we look to fill the void left by the absence of basketball.

This throwback edition takes us to everybody’s favorite former Sixer, Markelle Fultz. This goes back to his rookie season in the season finale against the Milwaukee Bucks at home where Fultz scored a triple-double in a blowout win. It brought a lot of hope for the former number 1 overall pick who only played in 14 games due to a bizarre shoulder injury.

April 11, 2018

Both the Sixers and the Bucks were headed to the NBA Playoffs in 2018 and both teams were just prepping for the playoffs. The Sixers were missing Joel Embiid due to a shoulder injury and the team rested JJ Redick while also limiting the minutes of Ben Simmons and Robert Covington.

So, this gave Fultz a chance to shine.

Fultz had a final stat line of 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 130-95 win over the Bucks. Justin Anderson led Philadelphia with 25 points and six rebounds and Dario Saric had 24 points and five rebounds.

Afterward, Fultz told reporters:

It was just a matter of going out there and enjoying myself and playing confident..It’s all love and appreciation.

Fultz was given the backup point guard job in the playoffs, but coach Brett Brown then gave the job back to T.J. McConnell due to the obvious fact that Fultz just was not ready yet. The Sixers fell to the Boston Celtics in five games in Round 2. [lawrence-related id=29204,29207,29190]

Wilson Chandler opens up on Markelle Fultz ‘yips’ accusation with Sixers

Former Philadelphia 76ers forward Wilson Chandler opens up on the Markelle Fultz yips situation.

The Markelle Fultz era will always be looked back on as one of the more confusing ones for the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers made a big move on draft night in 2017 to move up to select Fultz with the first overall pick and there was a ton of hype and excitement around him.

Then, it got weird.

He missed a lot of time with a bizarre shoulder injury that nobody knew where it came from and he was then accused of having the “yips” meaning it was all mental. He played a grand total of 33 games in about a season and a half in Philadelphia before being moved to the Orlando Magic.

Wilson Chandler, who is now with the Brooklyn Nets, but played with Fultz during his short time in Philadelphia, opened up on the Fultz situation with Bleacher Report’s Mirin Fader. He had this to say about the accusation that Fultz had the “yips” as he told Fader:

“There were rumors going on about his mental health. I don’t think that’s fair,” says former Sixers teammate Wilson Chandler, who’s now with the Brooklyn Nets. “How do people know? Nobody’s around him. Nobody’s interacting with him. They aren’t seeing what he’s doing with his teammates or family.”

Fultz is having a bit of a breakout season with Orlando averaging 11.8 points and 5.1 assists and he has become the regular starting point guard for the Magic, but Sixers fans will remember him mostly in a suit rather than in uniform.

The city of Philadelphia did not hate Fultz despite the fact that his time in the City of Brotherly Love was one of the more frustrating eras in Sixers history. In fact, they supported him more than most athletes in this city. They exploded just when he would take shots, let alone make any, they rooted for him to succeed no matter what it took to get there.

When Fultz and the Magic make their only trip to the Wells Fargo Center on April 5, there will probably be some more boos from the Philadelphia faithful. However, that is more just a product of him wearing a Magic jersey more than what transpired here with the Sixers.  [lawrence-related id=26717,26707,26695]

LeBron James is ‘so happy and proud’ of Orlando’s Markelle Fultz

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, like many, is thrilled with the growth displayed this season from Orlando’s Markelle Fultz.

The Los Angeles Lakers had a nine-game win-streak snapped on Wednesday night at the hands of the Orlando Magic. And while LeBron James had a career-high 19 assists in the loss, something that hasn’t happened to James while dishing that many assists, the story of the night was the big performance and clutch shots from former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz.

The Fultz revival has been one of the best stories of the NBA season, with last night’s performance at Staples Center solidifying that in a marquee moment. LeBron James was one of many who is happy to see the success Fultz is having after having two seasons in Philadelphia lost to a bizarre injury, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

“Confidence and opportunity,” said LeBron James when asked to explain how Fultz has turned it around. “They’re confident in him, he’s confident in himself. He’s given an opportunity to go out and play the game how he grew up playing. Everything else takes care of itself. I’ve been supportive of him ever since he was in high school, when he was a rookie in Philly. Been supportive of his situation and still [am] to this day. I’m happy as hell for him.”

Fultz has started in 35 of the 40 games he’s played in for the Magic this season. Earlier this month he had a career-high 25 points, which he followed up last night with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a triple-double.

LeBron James puts up career-high 19 assists in loss for first time

Los Angeles Laker star LeBron James has had high assist totals before, but it’s rare that such a performance comes in a loss.

LeBron James had a rare game on Wednesday night when his Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Orlando Magic, but it wasn’t just because the Lakers have been pummeling most of their opponents all season long.

Last night, LeBron reached a statistical milestone in a loss, something that hasn’t happened much this season. James tied a career-high in assists with 19 in Wednesday’s loss to the Magic, with the only other time James reached 19 assists coming in a win back in 2018 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

A big reason why LeBron’s night didn’t go as planned aside from the assists was his shooting, as he was 7 for 19 from the field and just 2 for 9 from the 3-point line, something the Lakers could ill-afford without the efficient scoring presence of Anthony Davis.

With the way James is dishing assists this season, he might get another chance to set his career-high but do so in a win before the season is over. The Lakers set out on a five-game road trip starting this Saturday in Houston against a couple of guys who know how to dish assists in high numbers, Russell Westbrook and James Harden.
