Punter Mark Vassett discusses approach to second season with Buffs

Australian punter Mark Vassett is looking for consistency during his second season in Boulder

Colorado Buffaloes punter Mark Vassett had a tremendous first season in Boulder, which earned the specialist an invite to the 2024 Big 12 football media days in Las Vegas along with head coach Deion Sanders and his sons, Shedeur and Shilo.

After transferring out of Louisville, he averaged 44.4 yards per punt (60 total) and had an eye-popping 22 boots inside the 20-yard line. Vassett also boomed 16 punts that traveled at least 50 yards. The Austrailian-born punter is entering his senior season with a chance to play on Sundays if he has another big fall.

At Big 12 media days this past week, I asked Vassett about his goals for the upcoming season:

“Just doing my job (by) pinning teams deep and flipping the field when we’re backed up, being consistent (and) eliminating the misses,” Vassett said. “That is basically what a good punter does.”

CU players who are landing on award watch lists ahead of the 2023 season

Take a look at which Buffs players are landing on award watch lists

It’s award watch list season and multiple Buffaloes are being recognized as contenders for some of college football’s biggest individual honors. While I’m sure these players would prefer Colorado to win a team trophy, it’s still encouraging to see a few Buffs earning some national respect.

Additionally, of the four Buffs we’ll highlight below, three of them are new to the program, which is another testament to the level of talent that head coach Deion Sanders brought to Boulder via the transfer portal.

Take a look at which Buffs players have landed on individual award watch lists ahead of the 2023 season:

Vassett is entering his first season with the Buffaloes after spending two seasons at Louisville and in the ACC.

A trio of #cubuffs earned preseason All-Pac-12 honors

A trio of CU Buffs received preseason All-Pac-12 honors on Tuesday.

As voted on by the media, Travis Hunter earned first-team defensive back, first-team all-purpose/specials teams and was an honorable mention pick at wide receiver; Mark Vassett (punter) and Jimmy Horn Jr. (return specialist) were also honorable mentions at their respective positions.

All three are entering their first seasons at Colorado and in the Pac-12. Hunter, a former No. 1 overall prospect, followed Deion Sanders from Jackson State while Vassett transferred in from Louisville and Horn from USF.

Elsewhere in the Pac-12, Utah owned an impressive six first-team reps, and former Buff Nikko Reed was named an honorable mention at defensive back ahead of his first season at Oregon.

The annual Pac-12 media day will be held on Friday in Las Vegas.

Mel Tucker and Michigan State Football’s recruiting efforts are taking over the world. Today, the Spartans found their punter for the 2021 recruiting class as Australian Punter Mark Vassett announced his commitment to Michigan State.

Vassett comes from the ProKick Program, which was also home to former Michigan State Punter, Jack Bouwmeester. Mark Vassett stands at an absolutely sturdy 6’4″ and weighs 210 pounds, continuing the trend of tall recruits for Mel Tucker and company.

The Spartans recently landed UTEP graduate transfer Punter Mitchell Crawford, who is also from Australia and has one remaining year of eligibility. Michigan State also has redshirt junior walk-ons, Bryce Baringer and Tyler Hunter.

As you likely know, Michigan State just landed a commitment from 3-star safety Michael Gravely Jr. out of Ohio. As a result, the MSU Football 2021 Recruiting Class is now ranked No. 21 in the country by 247sports.
