Former Washington QB Josh Johnson forced into NFC title game

Josh Johnson appeared in four games for Washington back in 2018 after the Alex Smith and Colt McCoy injuries.

Former Washington quarterback Josh Johnson found himself in a familiar position, in Sunday’s NFC championship game, as the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-7.

The Eagles had taken the opening kickoff and driven 66 yards in 11 plays to grab an early 7-0 lead. The 49ers, in turn, had taken possession at their own 25, gained 25 yards, and faced a 2nd & 6 at the 50. Rookie starting quarterback Brock Purdy dropped back to pass and was hit from his right side by the Eagles’ Hassan Reddick, injuring Purdy’s right throwing elbow.

Johnson, who was not even with the 49ers until he was signed on Dec. 6, was forced into quite the unenviable position of facing the NFL’s best pass rush while not even having had time to learn all of his own team’s offense. (Johnson had been practicing as the scout team quarterback, running the offense of the 49ers opposition each week since he signed with San Francisco).

This all rings a bell for Washington fans who follow their team closely.  November 18, 2018, Washington was 6-3 facing the Houston Texans when starting quarterback Alex Smith suffered a season-ending compound fracture of his leg.

Two weeks later, new starter Colt McCoy suffered a broken leg in a Monday night game at Philadelphia, ending his season. Mark Sanchez, the veteran third-stringer, was now the starter, and Washington urgently signed Johnson.

Sanchez struggled mightily, and Johnson was forced into action, though he had last thrown an NFL regular-season pass seven seasons earlier as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer in 2011. Johnson played in the final four games of the season, starting the last three.

Johnson did lead Washington to a 16-13 road win at Jacksonville; however, Washington, after the Alex Smith injury, did lose six of their final seven games, finishing 7-9.

Sunday, being thrown into the fire in a nearly impossible situation against the Eagles, Johnson completed 7 of 13 passing attempts for 74 yards (5.7 YPA). Johnson ran twice for two yards and was sacked twice for -14 yards, generating a passer rating of 70.7 and a QBR of 14.7. Unfortunately, he was also knocked out of the game with a concussion.

How Twitter reacted to Notre Dame-USC: Trojans side

Lot of happy people in Los Angeles and beyond.

If you’re a USC fan, you have to be feeling high and mighty right about now. The Trojans’ 38-27 win over Notre Dame meant a lot of things. It snapped a skid over their biggest rival, and it provided more Caleb Williams fodder for the Heisman Trophy voters. On top of that, this win, coupled with LSU’s loss to Texas A&M, put them in position to make the College Football Playoff provided they win the Pac-12 title game.

The Trojans are nationally relevant for the first time in years, and their fans will tell you it was worth the wait. They already are prepared to induct Williams into their Heisman quarterback club alongside Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer. Even with the stiff competition the playoff is sure to have, the confidence for both the Trojans and their supporters has to be through the roof. After reading these tweets, it’s hard to think otherwise:

Announcers set for Saints vs. 49ers Week 12 game

Saints vs. 49ers: Announcers set for Week 12 game broadcast on FOX

We’re in for a classic New Orleans Saints (4-7) rivalry game this week against the San Francisco 49ers (6-4), pitting two members of the old NFC West against each other. San Francisco has rallied around star running back Christian McCaffrey, acquired in a midseason trade with the Carolina Panthers, but the Saints defense knows him well. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. CT on Sunday, Nov. 27.

And we know who will be on the mic for the FOX broadcast in Week 12: Kevin Kugler and Mark Sanchez will call the game from the booth, with Laura Okmin reporting from the sidelines. Kugler is a veteran play-by-play commentator, and Sanchez has found success working games after hanging up his cleats, so they should have some interesting input.

San Francisco is coming off of a three-game win streak, having beaten the Arizona Cardinals 38-10 on Monday night after taking down the Los Angeles Chargers and L.A. Rams by margins of 22-16 and 31-14, respectively. The Saints will have their work cut out for them at Levi’s Stadium this Sunday. New Orleans held off that same Rams team in a 27-20 win at home last week, but the Cardinals (who were outmatched by the Niners) demolished them 42-34 earlier this season. We’ll have to hurry up and wait to see how this one turns out.

Nov. 22, 2022: 10-year anniversary of Mark Sanchez and the ‘Butt Fumble’

10 years after, Mark Sanchez, the Jets and the Butt Fumble

It is synonymous with Mark Sanchez, the New York Jets, and NFL infamy.

On Thanksgiving 2012, one of the most replayed downs in NFL history occurred.

This brings us to the 10-year anniversary of the Butt Fumble.

Sanchez and the Jets were obliterated by the Patriots, 49-19, and became, um, the butt of jokes for eternity.

The Patriots outscored the Jets 35-0 in the second quarter, which was highlighted by the “Butt Fumble.”

Sanchez’s face slammed right into Brandon Moore’s backside and Steve Gregory ran 32 yards into the end zone for the touchdown.

New England scored 3 touchdowns in 52 seconds in the quarter. Shane Vereen started the carnage by combining with Tom Brady on an 83-yard pass play.

Julian Edelman closed the trifecta by running a fumble back 22 yards.

Happy 10-year anniversary to the Butt Fumble

One of the wackiest plays in NFL history celebrates ten years Tuesday.

It’s the play that will live in Jets’ history forever, for better or for worse. And Tuesday marks a special anniversary for the play.

Tuesday marks the ten-year anniversary of the play simply known as the “Butt Fumble.”

On November 22, 2012, Thanksgiving Day at the Meadowlands, the Jets were playing host to the New England Patriots. It was 14-0 Patriots in the second quarter when the Jets had the ball on 1st and ten from their own 31-yard line.

Mark Sanchez would drop back and then keep the ball to run up the middle. Little did he know he was about to run right into the history books, as well as his own teammate.

Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork drove Jets offensive lineman Brandon Moore back and right into the path of Sanchez, causing Sanchez to run right into Moore’s backside, get knocked over and lose the football.

Steve Gregory would be right there to receive the loose ball and take it all the way for a touchdown to quickly make the score 21-0. Not long thereafter, it would be 28-0 Patriots and it would become that kind of night for the Jets.

Final score: Patriots 49, Jets 19.

Since then, the series has been just as bad for the Jets. They have beaten the Patriots just twice in the last ten years and are now on a 14-game losing streak to the Patriots after Sunday’s gut-punching 10-3 loss thanks to the 84-yard punt return by Marcus Jones.

Happy anniversary!

Mark Sanchez has fun with Thomas Morstead after “butt punt”

Mark Sanchez still wants to be the king of wacky plays, so don’t mess with him.

Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez certainly had an interesting NFL career, but let’s face it, most people will remember for one play and one play only: the butt fumble.

We all remember that Thanksgiving night in 2012 against the Patriots when Sanchez ran right into Brandon Moore, fumbled and returned for a touchdown by Patriots safety Steve Gregory. It’s one of the most infamous plays in sports, let alone football. It has its own Wikipedia page!

But that doesn’t mean he’s embarrassed by it. In fact, he’s almost embracing being the king of goofy plays because he joked on Twitter to Dolphins punter Thomas Morstead to “stay out of my lane bro”.

Morstead created the now-infamous “butt punt” during Sunday’s game against the Bills, kicking the ball right into the backside of Trent Sherfield and going out of the back of the end zone for a Bills safety.

Sanchez still wants to be the “king”, so to speak, but it was definitely all in good fun. Of course, Morstead got the last laugh because the Dolphins held on to beat the Bills. Even Sherfield took to Twitter to say his “cheeks have a big W tatted on them.”

Mark Sanchez jokingly takes exception with Thomas Morstead’s safety

That’s his area of expertise.

While the Miami Dolphins ended up beating the Buffalo Bills 21-19 on Sunday, the result was very much in doubt late in the fourth quarter.

After the Bills turned the ball over on downs inside Miami’s 5-yard line. The Dolphins’ offense wasn’t able to move the ball at all. They wound up facing a fourth down at their own 1-yard line.

This meant veteran punter Thomas Morstead was going to have to attempt a punt with much less space than he’s used to. On the attempt, Morstead’s kick hit protector Trent Sherfield in the rear end and went out of bounds for a safety.

While fans on social media were quick to dub the play a “Butt Safety,” former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez, who became infamous for his “Butt Fumble,” was quick to respond.

That’s some great humility from Sanchez to joke about his career lowlight. Surely, this is one that Morstead would like to forget as well.

Mark Sanchez delivers classic line during Falcons-Rams broadcast

Mark Sanchez with a classic one-liner during Falcons-Rams

Give Mark Sanchez credit, he nailed this one-liner.

The Rams were playing the Falcons on Sunday at SoFi and Sanchez had the color assignment on the game.

He was impressed with the effort of Rams offensive lineman Coleman Shelton and Sanchez said:

“Shelton is clearing out defenders faster than a teenager clears his search history.”

That line alone is worth a Sports Emmy nomination.
