Bucks sign former Ignite guard MarJon Beauchamp to rookie contract

Beauchamp signed his rookie contract with the Bucks after the team made him the 24th pick in the draft.

MarJon Beauchamp, formerly of the NBA G League Ignite, signed his rookie contract on Thursday with the Milwaukee Bucks, the team announced.

Beauchamp, the 24th overall pick last month, averaged 15.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals in 21 games last season with the Ignite. He scored at least 20 points six times and also logged six double-doubles throughout the season.

The Bucks value the versatility Beauchamp can play with and his understanding of the game. They believe he can fill quite a few needs on the roster, something Beauchamp is eager to prove and work toward in the coming months.

‘I can flourish with this team’: MarJon Beauchamp excited to join Bucks

Beauchamp expressed his excitement to learn from the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton among others.

On the night of June 23, Jon Beauchamp saw how the draft board was filling out and anxiously wanted his son to fall to the Milwaukee Bucks with the 24th pick.

He got his wish as MarJon was eventually announced as the pick.

What followed next was perhaps the best moment of the evening as MarJon immediately burst into tears surrounded by his family at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. He was still wiping away tears on his way to the stage to meet NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

The emotions were a result of his long path to reach this point.

He attended Chameleon BX after high school, which is a personalized training program in San Francisco, California. After six months, he went to Yakima Valley College and put his name on the map, averaging 30.7 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game.

Beauchamp then parlayed that success into an offer to join the NBA G League Ignite in their second season. He quickly climbed up draft boards with the Ignite and solidified himself as a first-round pick.

“It is a blessing to be in a winning situation and a winning team because I’m a winner,” Beauchamp said this week. “I want to win, too. I’m excited to learn and grow with this team. I feel like I can flourish with this team because I’m a faster learner and I want to learn. I was super excited when I got drafted here.”

The Bucks value the versatility Beauchamp can play with and his understanding of the game. They believe he can fill quite a few needs on the roster, something Beauchamp is eager to prove and work toward in the coming months.

Beauchamp averaged 15.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, two assists and 1.5 steals in 24 games with the Ignite. He possesses great athleticism and believes he can guard nearly every position on the court.

I’m a young, energy wing so I can come in and defend and defend the best players and give it my all. I know there is a lot of attention on Giannis (Antetokounmpo) and I feel like I can knock down that 3-ball in the corner — I’ve been working on it. I feel like the fastbreak transitions, I can flourish there.

The 21-year-old is eager to get into the gym and begin the transition to the NBA. In addition to Antetokounmpo, Beauchamp can’t wait to work with the likes of Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton and pick their brains on various topics.

Beauchamp is a relatively unknown name to the majority of the basketball community but is poised to change that in the coming months and years in Milwaukee. Based on his journey to this point, it may be worth keeping an eye on him.

Former G League Ignite guard MarJon Beauchamp confirms pre-draft meeting with Thunder

MarJon Beauchamp said his meeting with the Thunder was on Zoom with Sam Presti, Nick Collison and others.

In his pre-draft media availability, former G League Ignite guard MarJon Beauchamp revealed he had an online Zoom meeting — not a workout — with the Oklahoma City Thunder and spoke with general manager Sam Presti, Nick Collison and others on the staff.

Beauchamp also said he believed the meeting went well.

In terms of teams he’s actually worked out for, Beauchamp listed the Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs, Charlotte Hornets, Washington Wizards and New York Knicks.

The 21-year-old averaged 15.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists on 50% shooting in 12 games during the Ignite tour.

Beauchamp is projected to go late in the first round, so the Thunder will need to trade up if they want him because he will not be there at No. 34. Considering his only contact with the Thunder came in a Zoom call, it seems the team is not seriously considering drafting Beauchamp.

The 2022 NBA draft is scheduled for June 23.

Report: Malaki Branham, others worked out with Cavaliers on Wednesday

The Cavaliers hosted a couple of potential first-round targets for a workout on Wednesday.

Ohio State freshman Malaki Branham on Wednesday was reportedly among the prospects to participate in a pre-draft workout with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

Branham, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, averaged 13.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and two assists in 32 games with the Buckeyes. He was one of five freshmen in the country to have multiple 30-point games, and one of two from a Power Five school.

The 6-foot-5 guard is regarded as one of the top shooters in the draft after converting 41.6% of his 3-point attempts last season. He tied a Buckeyes freshman record with six 3s on Jan. 2 en route to a career-high 35-point performance.

In addition to Branham, the Cavaliers also hosted Alabama guard Keon Ellis and NBA G League Ignite forward MarJon Beauchamp among others. Cleveland has also previously worked out prospects like Tari Eason, TyTy Washington and E.J. Liddell.

Cleveland enters the draft with the 14th pick in the first round and selections 39 and 58 in the second round, respectively. Of the group on Wednesday, Branham and Beauchamp could be possible targets at 14.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

Projected first-round pick MarJon Beauchamp to work out with Hawks

Beauchamp of the NBA G League Ignite will reportedly be among the prospects to work out with the Hawks on Tuesday.

MarJon Beauchamp of the NBA G League Ignite will reportedly be among the prospects to work out with the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday, according to Kevin Chouinard of Hawks.com.

Beauchamp emerged as perhaps the top Ignite prospect this year, averaging 15.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, two assists and 1.5 steals in 24 games. He is most commonly projected to be a first-round pick after dazzling at times on the defensive end with his length and athleticism.

The 6-foot-6 forward will need to continue to work on his 3-point shooting, after converting on 24.2% of his attempts last season, but has the tools in place to be a rotation player at the next level.

In addition to Beauchamp, the Hawks also plan on working out Richmond forward Tyler Burton, Xavier guard Nate Johnson, Miami guard Charlie Moore, Georgetown forward Aminu Mohammed and West Virginia guard Taz Sherman on Tuesday.

Atlanta enters the pre-draft process with the 16th and 44th picks, respectively. They have recently hosted several prospects for workouts ahead of the draft, including LSU forward Tari Eason and Villanova guard Collin Gillespie.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.
