NBC tabs Maria Taylor as host of ‘Football Night in America’

Maria Taylor moves into the host role for Football Night in America on NBC

There has been plenty of shuffling in broadcast booths for the upcoming NFL season. And now, there will be a new host of “Football Night in America” on NBC.

With Mike Tirico moving to play-by-play, the studio role opened. NBC is filling it with Maria Taylor.

Taylor spent many years with ESPN before making the move to the Peacock network prior to the Summer Olympics in 2021.

NBC Sports made it official in a press release on Thursday:

Maria Taylor is the new host of Football Night in America, the most-watched studio show in sports, NBC Sports announced today. Football Night is NBC Sports’ flagship studio show, preceding Sunday Night Football — primetime television’s No. 1 show for an unprecedented 11 consecutive years — each week during the NFL season. Taylor debuted on the program as a co-host in 2021.

NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood: “Maria is the perfect choice to carry the legacy forward of anchoring the most-watched studio show in sports.”

In the last 12 months, Taylor – who was named one of 2021’s “Most Powerful Women in Sports” by Adweek – has hosted many of the most-watched events and programs in sports. Following her move to NBC Sports in July 2021, she hosted the Tokyo Olympics, Super Bowl LVI Pregame Show, and Beijing Olympics and Paralympics. Just prior to joining NBC Sports, she also hosted the primetime network broadcast of the NFL Draft and the NBA Finals.

In addition to her hosting roles, Taylor is executive producing and currently in production on an eight-part documentary series on the history of the Black quarterback in the NFL that will stream on Peacock.

Charles Barkley makes national championship game guarantee

NBA legend and analyst Charlest Barkley has made his national championship game pick to the dismay of Georgia fans across the country

TNT NBA analyst Charlest Barkley, a NBA legend and former Auburn basketball star, has made his national championship game pick. Barkley is not happy to see two of Auburn’s top rivals in national championship.

Georgia graduate Ernie Johnson works alongside Barkley on the NBA on TNT. Johnson, who is very familiar with Barkley’s dicey history of guarantees, does not want Barkley to pick Georgia to win the game.

NBC Sports reporter Maria Taylor and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards both made appeals for Barkley to pick Alabama.

Charles Barkley guaranteed his winner of the national championship:

Charles Barkley guarantees a Georgia win over Alabama in the national championship to the dismay of Ernie Johnson, Maria Taylor, Anthony Edwards, and Georgia fans across the country.

Barkley frequently picks NBA games as a part of his job, but he is notoriously inaccurate on his guarantee picks.

Notre Dame football could be in cards if Maria Taylor heads to NBC

Could NBC’s Irish coverage look a little different in 2021?

Maria Taylor recently found herself in the middle of a controversy involving ESPN colleague Rachel Nichols. Consequently, she took over for Nichols as host of “NBA Countdown” for this year’s NBA Finals coverage. However, Taylor’s days with the four-letter network appear to be numbered. A report from Front Office Sports indicates that Taylor is extremely close to a deal with NBC.

The reported deal, which the source says is “at the half-yard line”, would offer Taylor a variety of opportunities. One possibility is said to be NBC’s Notre Dame football coverage. It doesn’t specify what role she would have as that obviously can’t be determined as of yet, but it does open up the discussion of who on the current broadcast team she could replace.

Kathryn Tappen has been the sideline reporter since she joined NBC in 2014. Jac Collinsworth only has one season as the pregame/halftime host under his belt. It will be worth keeping an eye on what NBC does as the 2021 season gets closer to kickoff.

A timeline of the fallout over Rachel Nichols’ leaked comments about Maria Taylor

A look at the events from the past week.

ESPN has been at the center of controversy over the past three days regarding Rachel Nichols’ leaked comments about colleague Maria Taylor that were made public by a New York Times article that published on Sunday.

The drama led up to Tuesday’s news when ESPN announced that Malika Andrews will take over for Nichols as sideline reporter for 2021 NBA finals between the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns, and that Nichols would continue as host of The Jump.

In case you missed everything that happened over the holiday weekend before this decision was made, here’s a recap with a timeline of the events:

WATCH: Miss Terry Saban discusses the 2020 CFB season

Ms. Terry Saban joins ESPN’s Maria Taylor among other CFP coaches wives to talk about their 2020 experiences.

Miss Terry Saban joined ESPN’s Maria Taylor for a feature piece on the four coaches’ wives of the College Football Playoff.

She discussed her season, and how it’s weird to not be by her husband’s side as they travel to Dallas to play in the Rose Bowl.

Another key talking point by Miss Terry was her experience when Nick Saban tested positive for COVID. She detailed how Nick would sit in their study, watching practice from a camera that was positioned high above the field, and would be talking to defensive analyst Charlie Strong, instructing practice.

The entire piece is very interesting, as they also detail the various handlings of COVID at home.

Miss Terry ends the piece with a “Roll Tide.”

Notre Dame’s head coach Brian Kelly responds to ESPN’s College Game Day about his teams identity.

As the hosts of ESPN’s College Game Day, it should come to no surprise that Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly made an appearance. Maria Taylor asked what the Irish’s identity is and here was Kelly’s response.

Maria Taylor defends herself after Doug Gottlieb questioned why she gets an All-NBA vote

Maria Taylor stands up for herself after being called out by Doug Gottlieb.

The NBA released the media voting results for its end-of-season awards to the public on Friday, which meant that several reporters across the country had angry fans in their mentions asking them to clarify their ballot. One of these reporters was ESPN’s Maria Taylor, who left Lakers center Anthony Davis off her ballot entirely.

Davis received 99 out of 100 total media votes to make an All-NBA team, including 79 first-team selections, and 20 second-team selections. The only member of the media to not cast a vote for Davis was Taylor, and once fans on Twitter noticed and started calling her out, she explained that it was a “CLEAR mistake.”

Fox Sports’ Doug Gottlieb chimed in on the controversy, and openly asked why Taylor deserves to vote on the NBA’s All-NBA teams, arguing that she isn’t qualified for the privilege.

Many fans and fellow media members defended Taylor, and she spelled out exactly why she gets a vote in a direct response to Gottlieb.

Gottlieb didn’t stand down, though, and dug in on his take.

The exchange comes just a few days after had to defend herself after a radio host made sexist remarks about the outfit she wore during a Monday Night Football broadcast. The host, Dan McNeil, was later fired.
