Texas LB Marcus Tillman enters the transfer portal

Texas losses linebacker Marcus Tillman to the transfer portal.

The attrition continues for Steve Sarkisian and Texas as linebacker Marcus Tillman has entered his name into the transfer portal.

Tillman is a former three-star recruit from the class of 2019. The Florida product had just four tackles and one sack in the six games he played in as a Longhorn.

An MCL injury in his freshman season really set Tillman back. The linebacker made an appearance in his first four collegiate games but never really got back to the field post-injury.

Texas needs depth at the linebacker position in a major way. DeMarvion Overshown is still up in the air if he wants to turn pro or not. Jaylan Ford came along strong at the end of the year but the group massively underperformed as a whole.

UNLV transfer Jacoby Windmon has the potential to be an immediate impact starter if the Horns can land him.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 13 Marcus Tillman Jr.

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the UT roster. Today, we will be looking at RS fresh LB Marcus Tillman Jr.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at redshirt freshman linebacker Marcus Tillman Jr.

Marcus Tillman Jr., Linebacker

Height: 6-1 / Weight: 240

Class: Redshirt freshman

Hometown: Orlando, Florida

High School: Jones

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 65 position / No. 96 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star / No. 32 position / No. 76 in-state

Analysis: Playing in four games last season, Tillman suffered a season-ending injury against Oklahoma State. Since he only played in four games, Tillman was able to take a redshirt year.

Coming out of high school, Tillman was a three-star prospect on both 247Sports and Rivals. Schools such as Clemson, Florida, and Ohio State did extend an offer, but the Longhorns were able to beat the in-state Gators for Tillman’s signature.

An inside linebacker, Texas is shorthanded at the position going into this season. With Chris Ash’s defense switching to a 4-3, the inside linebacking position became an important role. Tillman will have some opportunities to get some playing time behind Juwan Mitchell.

Could the Longhorns look at the transfer portal for a linebacker?

Despite getting two injured linebackers back ahead of voluntary workouts, could the Texas Longhorns look at a transfer in Dillon Doyle?

Head coach Tom Herman has made it known that inside linebacker is an area of concern. The Longhorns thought they might lose Juwan Mitchell when he entered the transfer portal following the Alamo Bowl but cooler heads prevailed. Mitchell removed his name from the portal and is set to be the starting inside linebacker this coming fall.

The will be welcoming back linebackers coming off of injury in Ayodele Adeoye and Marcus Tillman Jr. Both of these players provide good depth at the position but could the team still look to add more ahead of the upcoming season? One name that is particularly interesting is Iowa’s Dillon Doyle who put his name in the transfer portal.

I’d like to take this time to THANK Iowa Football for my time in the program. Growing up in Iowa City, it has always been my DREAM to wear the Tiger Hawk, and I have taken great PRIDE in representing the state of Iowa for the last two seasons. The relationships I’ve formed through this program will last FOREVER, and I’m so incredibly GRATEFUL for each of the the people I’ve met during my time here. I’d like to thank my teammates and others in the community for the overwhelming amount of SUPPORT I’ve received the last few days.

With that said, I’m announcing that I’ll be moving on to the NEXT STEP of my career and entering the TRANSFER PORTAL. I am EXCITED to join a new football team and give my all to helping them on their path to a CHAMPIONSHIP- Dillon Doyle via his twitter account.

Herman and this staff are no strangers to pursuing players in the transfer portal. They earned a commitment from Tarik Black and even were in talks with former Alabama wide receiver Tyrelle Shavers before he committed to Mississippi State. Doyle is the son of embattled strength coach Chris Doyle who was placed on administrative leave when former players spoke up about negative experiences while members of the Hawkeyes.

Despite the investigation into his father, Tom Herman and company should kick the tires on possibly adding Dillon to bolster the linebacker group.
