Pitcher Marcus Phillips is scheduled for his first start at Tennessee.

No. 3 Tennessee (30-6, 10-5 SEC) will host Bellarmine (6-29, 5-10 ASUN) on Tuesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports baseball poll.

Sophomore Marcus Phillips (0-0) is slated to make his first start at Tennessee against Bellarmine. He has appeared in eight contests during his first season with the Vols in 2024, recording eight strikeouts and a 1.35 ERA.

Phillips earned his first career save by retiring the final two batters against Illinois on March 8.

Phillips transferred to Tennessee from Iowa Western Community College ahead of the 2024 campaign. He is from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Tony Vitello previews two-way player Marcus Phillips ahead of 2024 season

Tony Vitello previews two-way player Marcus Phillips ahead of the 2024 baseball season.

Marcus Phillips transferred to Tennessee during the offseason.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound pitcher and outfielder transferred to the Vols from Iowa Western Community College.

Seventh-year head coach Tony Vitello discussed Phillips ahead of the 2024 season that begins Feb. 16.

“It is good stuff, big stuff, that he brings to the table on the mound, and then at the plate it’s been common speak in the coach’s locker room he looks better than he ever has in the batting cage right now at the plate,” Vitello said. “That opportunity is not going away, as it is for most hitters, sometimes you got to pile up reps. I think that’s something a little more down the road for him. Immediately he will make an impact on the mound, just don’t know when.

“As excited as you get, when he throws one particular pitch, we all made a comment the other day, in the hitter versus pitcher type situation, we got to remind ourselves he’s basically a freshman and he’s a freshman from a cold weather state, I mean a really cold weather state. Last year due to injury, he was at a junior college, but really didn’t play, so he is not in the infant stage of his career, but very early stages of his career. I think he deserves the patience of the coaching staff, and from fans, and himself, he needs to provide himself time to be the best version of he is, but it’s pretty exciting how good it could become.”

Tony Vitello details Marcus Phillips being a pitcher first right now

Tony Vitello details Marcus Phillips being a pitcher first right now at Tennessee.

Sophomore Marcus Phillips took part in Tennessee baseball’s fall ball.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound pitcher and outfielder transferred to Tennessee from Iowa Western Community College.

Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello met with media on Thursday and discussed Phillips following fall ball.

“We asked the hitters, at times, who do you not like facing, or who is an uncomfortable at-bat, and the hitters don’t like facing him, I know that,” Vitello said of Phillips. “That feedback is probably more valuable than any of us standing there and critiquing his delivery or where he is at. I just know based off where he is from, how much he’s played, which is a lot, comes from the frozen tundra up there in the Dakotas, with all due respect, he’s just got a lot of room for growth. It’s ultra exciting to see where he is at right now, and then you kind of know how he progressed from August to now, so how is he going to progress from now until February when we start our season. That’s another thing to get excited about.

“While I think he can be dynamic with the bat, and we don’t want to give that up, I think right now he’s a pitcher first for us and he can really serve any role. You could name a role right now, and they’re all open. We know guys like Drew Beam can give us a large amount of innings, and Kirby (Connell) can be used a ton of times or for a bunch of appearances, but you could name a role right now and we don’t have a definitive answer, who’s going on what day or what spot, and he could fill any of those.”

Phillips is from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
