Marcus Davenport goes on Vikings’ injured reserve list, won’t play vs. Saints in Week 10

Marcus Davenport goes on Vikings’ injured reserve list, won’t play vs. Saints in Week 10

Marcus Davenport will miss at least the next four games with the Minnesota Vikings after being placed on injured reserve, the team announced Wednesday, meaning he won’t get to suit up when the New Orleans Saints visit the Vikings in a few weeks. They could also be without all-star wide receiver Justin Jefferson if he isn’t able to return.

One of the Saints’ biggest draft busts of the last decade, Davenport only appeared in four of Minnesota’s first six games (missing the first two weeks with an ankle injury) before going down with a new ankle sprain in the Vikings’ Week 6 win over the Chicago Bears. He’s suffered injuries to both legs this season.

Injuries were problem for Davenport with the Saints — he only played in 67 of their 89 games from 2018 to 2022, including the playoffs — but he had been effective on limited snaps with Minnesota. He had a pair of sacks and four tackles for loss in four games prior to this latest injury. But he won’t get a chance at a revenge game against the team that drafted him.

Vikings make three roster moves

The Vikings made three roster moves on Wednesday to fortify their roster

The Minnesota Vikings are continuously making roster moves to adjust their roster based on its current needs. This is normal for teams in the National Football League as injuries happen frequently.

Due to injuries, the Vikings made eight roster moves last week and waived one of those on Tuesday in wide receiver Trishton Jackson.

On Wednesday morning, the Vikings made three somewhat anticipated roster moves.

Marcus Davenport could be placed on injured reserve

After injuring his other ankle, Davenport could find himself on injured reserve

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Minnesota Vikings outside linebacker Marcus Davenport could be placed on injured reserve. He suffered a high ankle sprain on Sunday against the Chicago Bears and could be out upward of four to six weeks.

Davenport received the injury from an accidental leg whip from a teammate. It was worth noting that the injury was on the opposite leg from the injury he suffered before week one.

“Marcus Davenport does have an ankle injury,” said O’Connell. “We are still going through the evaluation here this morning and the afternoon on exactly the extent of that injury. It is definitely something we are going to have to really, really take a look at from a medical standpoint.”

If the Vikings are without Davenport for any period of time, that could hinder their pass rush greatly. In his 77 pass rush snaps, Davenport has seven pressures and two sacks while also making an impact in holding blocks for blitzers.

Vikings PFF grades on defense vs. Bears

The Vikings defense played relatively well on Sunday and the grades show that.

The Minnesota Vikings arguably played their worst game of the season against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, but they found a way to win by a score of 19-13.

The defense played really well against the Bears. They sacked Justin Fields and Tyson Bagent five times with Danielle Hunter getting his seventh and eighth sacks of the season.

The defense also matched their takeaway total from the season, including scoring their second touchdown of the season on a scoop-and-score. Josh Metellus got his first sack of his career and even slowed down to allow Jordan Hicks to scoop up the football.

The PFF grades for the defense are in and they aren’t quite what you expect.

The good, bad, and ugly after Vikings 19-13 win vs. Bears

There was plenty of good, bad and ugly in Sunday’s game against the Bears

It wasn’t pretty, but the Minnesota Vikings moved to 2-4 on the season with their win Sunday over the Chicago Bears. The Vikings offense was held under 200 yards passing in the absence of Justin Jefferson. Turnovers reared their ugly head yet again, and the injury bug bit the Vikings over and over again. Yet, they were still able to do enough to walk out with the victory.

Not only does the victory keep the Vikings season alive, but the win in their first division game of the season means they’re undefeated in the division, something that could play a factor later on if Kirk Cousins and the crew can right the ship.

But that’s getting a bit ahead of ourselves. For now, let’s just enjoy the victory by taking a look at the good, bad, and ugly from the Vikings win.

Marcus Davenport out versus Chicago Bears with ankle injury

Marcus Davenport has officially been ruled out for the rest of the Minnesota Vikings game against the Chicago Bears with an ankle injury.

Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Marcus Davenport has officially been ruled out versus the Chicago Bears.

Davenport was injured early in the second quarter by friendly fire, as it appeared his ankle was injured by a leg whip from his own teammate. Davenport sustained the injury on a play where he was harassing Justin Fields — who himself has left the game due to a hand injury and will not return.

The injuries are beginning to mount once again for this Vikings team, who suffered a slew of injuries last week, too. With Davenport officially out for the game, we’ll have to see if the Vikings defense can remain aggressive and effective. So far, they’ve done well to confuse the Bears quarterbacks and bring continuous pressure.

Brian Flores and the Vikings defense have been aggressive all season, and today has been no exception. Davenport’s absence will throw a wrench in those plans, but multiple guys on the defensive front have had success today.

Vikings’ Marcus Davenport leaves on cart with an ankle injury

The Vikings have lost a key piece of the defense, as edge rusher Marcus Davenport has left the game with an ankle injury

The Minnesota Vikings defense took a hit early in the second quarter, as edge rusher Marcus Davenport left the game with an apparent ankle injury.

Davenport was injured on the Bears’ field goal drive, as he appeared to get rolled up on by his own teammate while coming in to help stop quarterback Justin Fields on a scramble. As he was coming off the field, Davenport was in visible discomfort and, at times, unable to put weight on his leg.

The Vikings’ defense has been bringing a considerable amount of pressure early against the Bears, and they’ve had significant success with it. They’ve been able to speed up the process Fields goes through, and have been able to sack him once and hit Fields several times.

Losing Davenport is likely to have a major impact on the Vikings ability to continue bringing pressure. No one in the league blitzes more than this defense, and Davenport has been an integral part of that pressure the past few weeks.

The official word on Davenport is that he is questionable to return with an ankle injury. As of this writing, it’s unclear if the ankle injury is on the same ankle he injured in practice before week one.

Minnesota Vikings’ 53-man roster going into Week 6

The Vikings 53-man roster has seen some changes since last week

The Minnesota Vikings are facing a pivotal game in week six against their NFC North division rival Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon.

It’s a huge game for the Vikings and Bears, as they both sit at 1-4 and a loss will crater their playoff chances. Both teams had aspirations of a playoff berth but it hasn’t looked like it’s going to happen to this point.

Despite their record, the underlying metrics for the Vikings look good. They have played good football outside of their 12 turnovers and -9 turnover differential. That fact gives them a glimmer of hope for a potential playoff berth.

Going into Sunday’s game, here is the Vikings updated 53-man rosters after making multiple roster moves this week.
