UFC 291 results: Derrick Lewis takes pants off after running knee leads to TKO in opening seconds

In a wild sequence at UFC 291, Derrick Lewis hit Marcos Rogerio de Lima with a fight-opening knee. To celebrate, he took his pants off.

If there were any fans out there who thought they’ve seen it all in MMA, [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] going Jorge Masvidal-type of airborne for a flying-knee TKO – and then taking his pants of for a Degeneration X-style crotch chop – may have them rethinking things.

In a heavyweight bout on the UFC 291 main card, Lewis (27-11 MMA, 18-9 UFC) ran across the cage for a flying knee on the opening bell and finished  [autotag]Marcos Rogerio de Lima[/autotag] (21-9-1 MMA, 10-7 UFC) with follow-up punches 33 seconds into Round 1. The event took place at Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

In a move Lewis revealed he didn’t expect until it happened, “The Black Beast” showed off an unusual angle of his athleticism when he landed the knee. For the next 30 seconds, Lewis pounded away at de Lima, who covered up.

Upon referee Dan Miragliotta’s stoppage, Lewis immediately removed his Venum fight trunks and danced in his gray compression shorts. He chopped his crotch, a nod to legendary WWE faction DX.

After the fight, Lewis told commentator Joe Rogan the fight was the last on his promotional deal with the UFC.

Lewis, 38, snapped a three-fight skid while de Lima, 38, had a two-fight winning streak axed.

Records: Lewis (26-11-0) | Rogerio de Lima (21-9-1)

Lewis takes the walk on a 3-bout losing skid. That includes a pair of 1st-round setbacks against Serghei Spivac in February and Sergei Pavlovich last July. Win or lose, “The Black Beast” has had 7 consecutive fights finish inside the distance, with 3 wins via KO/TKO, 3 losses via KO/TKO and a loss by way of submission.

Rogerio de Lima has picked up victories in each of the past 2 outings, including a unanimous-decision win over Waldo Cortes-Acosta last time out in late April. He has gone the distance in 3 of his previous 5 outings.

Lewis has a 4-inch reach advantage, but Rogerio de Lima holds a 3.62-to-2.54 significant strikes landed per minute edge and is much more accurate on those strikes at 66.78% to just 52.57% for Lewis. In addition, Rogerio de Lima has managed a 1.35 takedown average to just 0.59 for Lewis, and he has a 47.62% takedown accuracy percentage to only 28.13%.

UFC 291: Lewis vs. Rogerio de Lima odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:36 a.m. ET.

  • Fight result (2-way line): Lewis +185 (bet $100 to win $185) | Rogerio de Lima -225 (bet $225 to win $100)
  • Over/Under: 1.5 rounds (Over +150 | Under -200)
  • Will the fight go the distance? (Yes +400 | No -700)

UFC 291: Lewis vs. Rogerio de Lima picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Rogerio de Lima (-225) should add to the woes of Lewis (+185), who has suffered a pair of setbacks in the 1st round while losing 3 fights in a row.

The Brazilian fighter has been much more dependable lately, picking up 4 wins in the past 5 outings. However, you can’t risk more than 2 times your potential return.

Take ROGERIO DE LIMA IN ROUND 1 (+100) at even money instead of the outright play on him to just record the victory. You can also play ROGERIO DE LIMA BY KO/TKO/DQ IN ROUND 1 (+125) for a little more value.

Over/Under (O/U)

Under 1.5 Rounds (-200) will cost you 2 times your potential return, and that’s quite expensive, and you can’t play No (-700): Fight to go the distance, as that’s way more costly.

AVOID, and simply focus on the round betting and method instead.

Marcos Rogerio de Lima thinks heavyweight champ Jon Jones will get a real test vs. Stipe Miocic at UFC 295

Thirty fights into his career, and after 16 in the UFC, Marcos Rogerio de Lima knows a thing or two about the heavyweight division.

SALT LAKE CITY – Thirty fights into his career, and after 16 in the UFC, [autotag]Marcos Rogerio de Lima[/autotag] knows a thing or two about the heavyweight division.

De Lima (21-8-1 MMA, 10-6 UFC) has won four of his past five fights, including quick first-round stoppages of Ben Rothwell and former UFC champ Andrei Arlovski. In April, he gave highly touted prospect Waldo Cortes-Acosta the first loss of his career. Saturday, he gets Derrick Lewis (26-11 MMA, 17-9 UFC) in yet another stiff test at UFC 291 at Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

“He’s a very explosive guy,” de Lima said through a translator at Wednesday’s UFC 291 media day. “I don’t see the quickness as much. I think I’m faster than him. I think I can do more in that sense. I think I can move faster. I think my skill set is really good for this division. All I have to do is be mindful of defense – just be there, look at what’s coming and be on offense fast.”

A win on the ABC- and ESPN-broadcast prelims ahead of the main card on pay-per-view certainly would have de Lima in position to ask for some continued bigger names – maybe even in a spot in which he could be in the mix for the winner of the UFC 295 heavyweight title fight between champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] and ex-champ [autotag]Stipe Miocic[/autotag].

That fight, which headlines UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden in November, is one de Lima thinks Jones could struggle in.

“It’s a great fight,” the Brazilian said. “We had a lot of expectations with Ciryl Gane, but the real, the complete MMA true heavyweight fighter there is, is Stipe Miocic – the complete fighter. It’s going to be a great fight.”

Check out de Lima’s full pre-fight interview in the video above.

All the UFC and Bellator fight announcements that were first reported or confirmed by MMA Junkie in the past week.

MMA fight announcements are hard to follow. With so many outlets and channels available, it’s nearly impossible to organize.

But here at MMA Junkie, we’ve got your back.

Each week, we’ll compile all the newly surfaced fights in one spot. Every Monday, expect a feature listing everything you might have missed from the UFC or Bellator.

Here are the fight announcements that were broken or confirmed by MMA Junkie or officially announced by a promotion from May 16-21.

The ‘BMF’ title returns: Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje 2 to headline UFC 291 in Salt Lake City

The UFC is headed back to Salt Lake City with a big pay-per-view headlined by a BMF title fight between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.

The UFC is bringing the “BMF” title back into the fold – and it’s vacant.

With Jorge Masvidal retired, [autotag]Dustin Poirier[/autotag] and [autotag]Justin Gaethje[/autotag] will headline UFC 291 in a five-round bout, promotion president Dana White announced Tuesday.

UFC 291 will take place July 29 at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City and will also feature a co-headliner between former UFC light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag], who welcomes former 185-pound titleholder [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] to the division.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] returns against [autotag]Ikram Aliskerov[/autotag]; [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] battles [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag]; and [autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag].

Poirier (29-7 MMA, 21-6 UFC) and Gaethje (24-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) have angled for a rematch against one in another in recent months. The two first fought at UFC on FOX 29 in April 2018 when Poirier defeated Gaethje by fourth-round TKO in a Fight of the Year candidate.

Since that meeting, Poirier is 6-2, including two wins over Conor McGregor and an interim title victory over Max Holloway. The two losses, however, were both for undisputed titles, submission defeats to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira.

Gaethje has the same record over that period of time with losses to the same two men as Poirier after consecutive knockouts of James Vick, Edson Barboza, Donald Cerrone, and Tony Ferguson before he was submitted by Nurmagomedov. A Fight of the Year candidate vs. Michael Chandler led to another title fight, which Gaethje lost against Oliveira.

In March, Gaethje won a majority decision against Rafael Fiziev.

There has only been one other BMF title fight in history, which took place at UFC 244 in November 2019 when Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz. The promotion hadn’t displayed public interest in reinstating the title in recent years, though the question was repeatedly asked.

Also on the UFC prelims, [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] faces [autotag]Marcos Rogerio de Lima[/autotag], and [autotag]Stephen Thompson[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Michel Pereira[/autotag] in a bout originally expected for UFC 289 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
