Peyton Manning compliments Garrett Nussmeier for staying at LSU

Garrett Nussmeier certainly could have pursued starting opportunities in the transfer portal, but he opted to stay in Baton Rouge.

The transfer portal is like a black hole that inhales players every year who are looking for a fresh new start at another school. One position that the transfer portal is full of is quarterbacks.

A lot of younger quarterbacks are not willing to sit behind a veteran and learn the ropes when they can transfer somewhere and play immediately. There are some exceptions, like LSU’s new starting quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag].

Nussmeier is a redshirt junior who has spent the past three seasons at LSU as a backup quarterback. [autotag]Max Johnson[/autotag] was the starter for the Tigers in 2021 and [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] has started the past two seasons.

Nussmeier recently went to the Manning Passing Academy and [autotag]Peyton Manning[/autotag] praised how Nuss decided to stay at LSU instead of transferring.

“It’s hard. I can’t speak for all of them but I know there’s something to learning the system, growing in it as opposed to learning a new system every year,” Manning said. “It’s extremely hard and a young quarterback has to learn a new system every year. It’s really hard to develop. In college if you choose to transfer, it takes a couple of years to be truly comfortable in a system I think. There are rewards for guys that stay that they should be comfortable in that system because you’ve had so many reps and that’s the best way to learn and grow.”

Nussmeier has the chance to lead LSU to the College Football Playoff this season.

Peyton Manning is high on LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier entering 2024 season

Peyton Manning was asked what he thought about LSU’s new signal caller. Here’s what he had to say.

Recently LSU starting quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] participated in the [autotag]Manning Passing Academy[/autotag] at Nicholls State University and he finished as one of the top 10 players at the academy.

The camp is hosted by former NFL quarterbacks Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. Archie and Eli were legends at Ole Miss while Peyton was the contrarian and he was a legend on Rocky Top for Tennessee.

All three were successful quarterbacks in the NFL and Peyton and Eli even went on to combine for four total Super Bowl wins. During the camp, Peyton was asked what he thought about LSU’s new signal caller. Here’s what he had to say.

“I like Garrett. I’ve known his dad for years, we were old teammates and proud of Garrett,” Manning said, per 247Sports. “I’ve kept up with him throughout his high school and college career. What a great bowl game he had, been patient, waited his turn and turned that game and took advantage of it,” Manning said. “I see him having a really good season. He’s a great kid and I’ve really enjoyed keeping up with his career.”

Nussmeier has a chance to put up incredible numbers for the Tigers this fall and he has the talent to lead LSU to the College Football Playoff.

Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman stands out at the Manning Passing Academy

Watch Conner Weigman show off his accuracy at the QB competition and the Manning Passing Academy

There are many questions heading into the 2024 Texas A&M football season, and one of them is how Conner Weigman will fare under the new system. He is also returning from a season-ending injury that still limited him during spring practice.

While these questions remain up in the air, we did get to see Weigman in action a few days ago at the Manning Passing Academy. Even though they spent most of the time serving as camp instructors, a few friendly competitions among the college quarterbacks took place.

The team at On3 ranked him as one of the top performers in the camp. During one of the throwing challenges, which you can view below, he showed some of his improved accuracy.

CAREER STATS (9 Games)

  • Completions – 155
  • Attempts – 251
  • Percentage – 62%
  • Yards – 35
  • Touchdowns – 16
  • Interceptions – 2

Garrett Nussmeier has a message for potential LSU recruits

If you want to play in the NFL, Garrett Nussmeier said LSU is the place to be.

Recruiting has always been a complex process, and it’s only had more layers added to it in the NIL era.

But while money can be a key inducement for getting high school players to sign, it’s not the only important factor. Players also want to go to programs with track records of developing future NFL stars, and when it comes to that question, few schools can hold a candle to LSU.

Quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] had a clear message to potential Tigers recruits while talking to reporters at the Manning Passing Academy: LSU will develop you into an elite player. Nussmeier pointed directly to [autotag]Jack Marucci[/autotag], LSU’s director of performance innovation, calling him a “mad scientist.”

“Jack Marucci has done an unbelievable job. He’s like a mad scientist down there,” Nussmeier said. “He’s always coming up with something to help us get better. And it’s a huge advantage for us at LSU.

“So any recruits out there: LSU is where you need to be. Not just from what we’ve proven with our track record, but they call it NFLSU for a reason, and we have people in the entire building that all they care about is making us better players. Helping us be better mentally, physically, strength-wise, we have the best strength staff in the country.

“If you’re questioning where you need to be, this NIL money is cool and all, but the real money is in the league. And you want to be produced, you want to be developed, LSU is where you need to be.”

That’s certainly a compelling sales pitch, and it’s backed up by recent history as LSU has produced quite a few big-time draft prospects including three first-round picks in this year’s.

Garrett Nussmeier says things feel ‘different’ at LSU entering 2024 season

“Ten wins isn’t good enough anymore,” Garrett Nussmeier said at the Manning Passing Academy.

It would be hard to argue coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] hasn’t done an impressive job through two seasons at LSU.

The Tigers have turned in back-to-back 10-win campaigns, including an SEC West title in his first season. But as LSU prepares for Kelly’s third season, it’s expected to take a leap into College Football Playoff contention, especially with the postseason expanding to 12 teams.

Quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag], who will take over for [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], believes this team is capable of taking such a leap and told reporters at the Manning Passing Academy that things feel “different” in 2024.

“It’s just the culture that I think we continue to try to build,” Nussmeier said. “And so this offseason, it’s just different. It just feels different around the building, and I think we have more of a mindset that it’s time for us to handle what we need to handle.

“Ten wins isn’t good enough anymore.”

LSU will hope it can take a leap this fall despite suffering key losses on both sides of the ball, but it’s clear Nussmeier is confident in the pieces on the roster.

Garrett Nussmeier explains why he never transferred from LSU

Garrett Nussmeier certainly had the chance to start elsewhere while waiting at LSU over the last three seasons, but he opted to stay.

In the modern era of college football, LSU quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] is something of an irregular case.

He enters his fourth season on the team and has just one career start under his belt. Nussmeier has shown promise when he’s had the chance to play, but he’s been waiting as a backup over the last three seasons.

Given his flashes, Nussmeier certainly had transfer opportunities. After the 2022 season, he would have had the chance to start for multiple power conference teams.

Instead, he opted to stay at LSU and wait for his chance to start. At the Manning Passing Academy, he explained the reasoning behind that decision.

“I felt like this was the place I was supposed to be, I felt like God put me here for a reason,” Nussmeier said. “And like I said earlier, I felt like it was just my responsibility. I trusted Him and trusted His timing to keep my head down and just keep working. Hopefully, it will pay off in the long run, and if it doesn’t, then that wasn’t His plan either.”

While it remains to be seen how Nussmeier handles the opportunity, he enters the 2024 season as the presumptive starter despite LSU also taking a transfer with SEC starting experience in [autotag]AJ Swann[/autotag].

This is Nussmeier’s team in 2024, and at long last, he’ll have the chance to prove himself on the big stage.

LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier ready for long-awaited opportunity to start

Garrett Nussmeier will finally get the chance to start after three years of waiting.

It’s been a bit of a winding college journey for presumptive LSU starting quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag].

He saw the field early, playing in four games as a true freshman in 2021. Some of that was extended action, most notably when he played all but the first two series against Arkansas after taking over for [autotag]Max Johnson[/autotag], finishing the game 18 of 31 with 179 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

But when [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] arrived as a transfer in 2022, Nussmeier was relegated back to the bench. He’s appeared in 14 games over the last two seasons with most of his attempts coming as he stepped in for an injured Daniels against Georgia in the 2022 SEC Championship and again against Alabama in 2023.

Nussmeier has just one start in his career, a ReliaQuest Bowl win over Wisconsin to end last season. At the Manning Passing Academy, said he’s excited to finally get the chance to be the team’s starter after three years of waiting.

“With the dynamic, it’s changed obviously a little bit,” Nussmeier said. “But I’ve been preparing for this, I’ve been excited for this since I got to school. I got a flash of it my freshman year and then it was taken away. So I’ve just been itching to get it back ever since.

“Staying at LSU and being where I felt like I needed to be and where God had me for a reason, I’m excited. And like I said earlier, I’m just trying to put my head down and work, trust in God and let him do the rest.”

Nussmeier has big shoes to fill as he replaces Daniels, a two-year starter who won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 after leading the nation in nearly every quarterback stat. Whether Nussmeier can play at that level remains to be seen, but he seems to be mentally ready to lead this team as the starting quarterback.

LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier named a standout at the Manning Passing Academy

Garrett Nussmeier could put up big numbers as he takes over for Jayden Daniels this fall.

Every year some of the most elite quarterbacks in the country come together at Nicholls in Thibodaux, Louisiana, to compete in a multi-day event called the [autotag]Manning Passing Academy[/autotag].

LSU’s new No. 1 quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] took his talents to Thibodaux to see where he matched up with some of the other best quarterbacks in the country. He came away as one of the most impressive quarterbacks at the event.

The event consists of multiple different phases, a deep ball challenge, the main event (three throws ranging in yardage distance that required the participants to hit three moving golf carts before making a 40-plus yard throw on the run into the “Kaboom” net), and then the Cane’s challenge (each quarterback got one attempt at throwing the football into a basketball hoop from 30-plus yards out.)

Here is what On3 had to say about Nussmeier, who was named a standout from the event.

“Nussmeier joined Jayden Daniels at the Manning Passing Academy a year ago, which also saw another Heisman finalist shine in Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Fast forward to 2024, and Nussmeier is taking the reins at LSU, a program that finished with college football’s No. 1 total offense in 2023. Nussmeier is a known gunslinger, and a throwing competition like Friday Night Lights is right up his alley. Nussmeier had one of the best deep ball arms in attendance, and he’s got zip on throws to each level of the field. Nussmeier then joined a trio of quarterbacks as the winners of the Cane’s Challenge after he sunk his lone attempt at a 30-foot throw into a basketball hoop in the final event of the night.”

I can’t wait to see the insane numbers Nussmeier puts up with the LSU offense this fall.

Florida QB Graham Mertz enjoying time as counselor at Manning Passing Academy

“I think the Gator fans are going to love what they see.”

Florida quarterback [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] is one of nearly 50 camp counselors at the Manning Passing Academy this week, and he’s soaking in the experience as much as he can.

The event began on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Mertz spoke with the media on Friday.

“It’s been so fun,” Mertz said “For me, it’s being able to pick pretty much everybody’s brain, whether it’s a college guy or a Manning, literally anybody here. Just ask questions, be a sponge and soak everything in.”

Mertz never joined the Manning Passing Academy while in high school, but did participate in other camps with college counselors. He called it a blessing to finally make it to the Academy.

A full list of counselors can be found in the Camp Guide on the Academy’s homepage.

Mertz calls 2024 Florida Gators ‘special’

The Florida quarterback also offered his thoughts on the upcoming season for the Gators, acknowledging that last year’s 5-7 finish left much to be desired. Despite facing what amounts to the nation’s toughest schedule in 2024, Mertz thinks this team could surprise a few.

“I think the Gator fans are going to love what they see. We’ve got depth – added a bunch of new guys on both sides of the ball, experienced guys. But across the board, the amount of depth we have is different than last year. I’m always optimistic about every season, but I think we have a special team.”

Jackson Arnold among Friday’s standouts at Manning Passing Academy

Jackson Arnold is among Manning Passing Academy standouts on Friday.

The 2024 college football season is going to be highly anticipated for the Oklahoma Sooners. It’s their first year in the SEC. The Sooners will have a new offensive line. And, more importantly, they’ll have a new starting quarterback at the helm.

Jackson Arnold will take over for Dillon Gabriel to lead an offense that averaged 41.7 points per game. He’s looked good in limited opportunities, but is hoping to elevate his game this offseason as he takes part in the Manning Passing Academy, a football camp conducted by the legendary quarterback trio Archie Manning, Peyton Manning and Eli Manning.

In Friday’s action, Arnold was considered one of the session’s standout performers by On3.

Arnold’s play as a freshman proved his toughness outside the pocket, and the former 5-star had good zip on his passes at Friday Night Lights and had some nice deep ball throws. Arnold told On3 he feels much more confident entering Year 2 of college ball in Norman, and his arm talent showed in South Louisiana on Friday night. – On3

Arnold has the talent to be another highly productive quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. His size, arm strength and accuracy give Arnold a chance to take the world by storm in his first season as a starter.

If Oklahoma’s offensive line can give him enough time to let his playmakers get down the field, Arnold’s going to have a big year.
