Former Florida LB finds new home through transfer portal

After a season with the Florida Gators, linebacker Mannie Nunnery will wrap up his college career with Texas State as a graduate transfer.

After four years in Houston and one with Florida, linebacker [autotag]Mannie Nunnery[/autotag] Jr. is transferring to Texas State for his final season of collegiate eligibility, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

A starter at times last season for Florida, Nunnery battled with the decision to leave Gainesville. He initially announced his entry into the transfer portal on Jan. 11, but he pulled his name from the pool just over a week later. He spent the spring getting significant reps with the first team, but many of Florida’s linebackers were recovering from injury.

Facing a slide back down the depth chart, Nunnery finally pulled the trigger on transferring as the spring portal opened. He leaves Florida with 28 total tackles (11 solo), including 1.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks. Nunnery also had one pass deflection in the Orange and Blue.

As mentioned above, Florida has plenty of linebackers to rely on even without Nunnery on the roster. Shemar James and Derek Wingo should be the main two inside linebackers, but freshman Myles Graham should earn snaps as well.

Gators LB withdraws name from transfer portal, returns to Florida

The Gators are getting this veteran linebacker back on campus for his final year of eligibility.

Florida football got some good news on Sunday when redshirt junior [autotag]Mannie Nunnery[/autotag] decided to return to the Gators and withdraw his name from the NCAA transfer portal.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 225-pound defender was originally recruited by the Houston Cougars. Nunnery entered the portal on Jan. 11, but less than two weeks later, apparently decided that Gainesville is the best place for him; he has one more year of eligibility remaining.

The Lone Star State product played four seasons with the Cougars, taking a redshirt after appearing in two games his true freshman year. Including his time with the Orange and Blue in 2023, Nunnery has amassed 109 tackles — including 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks — over the course of his collegiate career.

With Florida, he grabbed 28 tackles (11 solo) along with a half sack and a pass breakup. Nunnery’s 2023 season-high in tackles (10 tackles; 2 solo) came in the overtime loss at the Swamp to the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Gators senior linebacker, former transfer returns to portal for final year

The Gators lose this “freaky athlete” to the transfer portal after just one season in Gainesville.

Florida football lost another member of its defensive corps to the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday with the departure of senior linebacker [autotag]Mannie Nunnery[/autotag].

The 6-foot-1-inch, 225-pound defender only spent a season with the Gators after transferring from the Houston Cougars, where he spent four years before coming to Gainesville. Nunnery has one season of eligibility remaining.

The Houston, Texas, product appeared in all 12 games for the Orange and Blue last fall including a trio of starts. He finished with 28 tackles — including 1.5 tackles for a loss and half a sack — plus a quarterback hurry and a pass breakup in a role that stretched across several positions in the defensive midfield.

“Mannie‘s another freaky athlete, man,” head coach Billy Napier said of him in late September. “He’s the fastest linebacker that we have, he tests through the roof in all the different metrics that we use.”

Nunnery’s departure marks the 25th from the Gators program this offseason. Napier’s roster is now three vacant scholarships short of the 85 scholarship cap.

Florida add Houston transfer linebacker Mannie Nunnery

The Gators added yet another transfer linebacker from the portal on Monday. Welcome to the Swamp, Mannie Nunnery.

Florida added former Houston linebacker [autotag]Mannie Nunnery[/autotag] on Monday, according to a post he made on Twitter. The school later confirmed the news, making Nunnery the third linebacker to join the Gators via the transfer portal this offseason.

Nunnery joined the Cougars as a member of the 2019 recruiting class and played in 31 games over four years with the team, including a redshirt season. After seeing action in just two games as a freshman, Nunnery started getting snaps in 2020. He took 25 snaps in the slot as a sophomore but ended up spending most of his time lined up in the box. By 2021, he emerged as a key special teams player and started receiving even more opportunities on defense.

He finally broke out in 2022, playing in nine games for the Cougars and finishing the year with a 73.2 defensive grade, according to Pro Football Focus.

Nunnery joins a linebacker room that desperately needs some depth. Aside from fellow transfers [autotag]Teradja Mitchell[/autotag] (Ohio State) and [autotag]Deuce Spurlock[/autotag] (Michigan), Florida has only junior [autotag]Derek Wingo[/autotag], sophomores [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag] and Scooby Williams and true freshman [autotag]Jaden Robinson[/autotag]. The Gators expect Nunnery to play WILL linebacker for them.

Out of high school, the 247Sports composite ranked Nunnery at No. 94 among outside linebackers in the class of 2019. He was No. 1,326 overall and No. 174 out of the state of Texas.

Florida offers former Houston linebacker from transfer portal

This former Houston linebacker received an offer from the Gators via the transfer portal.

Florida has already added two linebackers from the transfer portal this offseason, and it looks like they’re not stopping any time soon. The Gators have extended an offer to former Houston linebacker [autotag]Mannie Nunnery[/autotag] on the same day that his name appeared in the portal.

Nunnery officially entered the portal on Thursday, Jan. 19, one day after the deadline of Jan. 18. Despite his name appearing after the deadline, programs are given 48 hours to officially enter a player’s name into the portal. Because Nunnery notified Houston before the deadline passed, he is deemed eligible for the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 205-pound linebacker spent four years with Houston, taking part in 25 games and recording 81 total tackles (41 solo), eight tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, and forcing one fumble. He is projected to play the WILL linebacker spot if he accepts the offer and joins the Orange and Blue.

Florida has already added seven players from the portal at a variety of positions. All seven players, including former Wisconsin quarterback [autotag]Graham Mertz,[/autotag] are enrolled in classes, on campus, and are ready to participate in spring practices. With former Kentucky offensive lineman [autotag]Kiyaunta Goodwin[/autotag] on campus this weekend for a visit, the Gators could be on their way to having double-digit transfer players on their 2023 roster.
