UFC Fight Night 216’s Manel Kape: I have more weapons than ‘stiff guy’ David Dvorak

Manel Kape expects his power and speed to be too much for David Dvorak at UFC Fight Night 216 on Saturday in Las Vegas.

[autotag]Manel Kape[/autotag] expects his power and speed to be too much for [autotag]David Dvorak[/autotag].

Kape (17-6 MMA, 2-2 UFC) meets Dvorak (20-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 216, which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

With his five most recent wins by knockout, Kape expects to take out Dvorak, who he doesn’t think will be able to keep up with his movement.

“He’s a stiff guy,” Kape said on MMA Junkie Radio. “It’s a fight I can win not easily, but I can win more easy than the other fights because he’s a perfect match for me. When I fight somebody more stiff, his footwork is not so developed so I can make my game – it’s where I see I have more weapons than him.”

Both men have dropped decisions to Matheus Nicolau, which has allowed Kape to draw confidence and plenty of takeaways from that fight.

“He’s going to feel not just the speed, but the power,” Kape said. “I have crazy power for my division. He’s going to feel my power, and when he feels the power, he’s going to try and take me down. He’s going to shoot for the takedown, because I saw his last fight with Matheus Nicolau and Matheus Nicolau dropped him.

“And if Matheus Nicolau dropped him, what am I going to do? Because I fought Matheus Nicolau and Matheus Nicolau is a fast guy. He’s one of the fastest guys, but he’s fast with his hands with no power. So if one guy is fast with no power and he drops you, then what am I going to do to you?”

NAC to monitor UFC’s Manel Kape, follow precedent set for M3 metabolite-positives

UFC flyweight Manel Kape tested positive for the M3 metabolite recently but won’t receive a suspension or fine.

[autotag]Manel Kape[/autotag] is the latest UFC fighter to test positive for the M3 metabolite in Nevada, but he won’t face significant punishment.

On Tuesday at the monthly Nevada Athletic Commission meeting held in Las Vegas, Kape went before the commission for a hearing during a conference call in which an agreement was reached that he will have to meet requirements on two drug tests by Sept. 30 in order to be relicensed in the state.

“As presented is consistent with our past practice relating to M3 metabolite cases,” NAC executive director Jeff Mullen said. “Two tests performed by USADA over a six-month period, if the commission agreed in this case, would be from April 22 to Sept. 30. Test results must be below 100 picograms or a negative test. If so, the fighter would not have to come back before the commission for licensing pertaining to the M3 metabolite. However, all other standard medical clearance and licensing requirements would still apply in order to apply and fight in Nevada.”

Kape, who was joined by UFC senior VP of athlete health and performance Jeff Novitzky, did not speak during the hearing. The commission unanimously voted approval of the agreement terms, which were formulated on past precedent of M3 metabolite cases.

News originally surfaced of Kape’s flagging when he announced his positive test on social media. Kape said April 9 drug test results detected 17 picograms per milliliter. The post was deleted shortly thereafter.

“I will start by stating unequivocally that I did not intentionally use DHCMT nor any other prohibited substance for that matter,” Kape wrote. “I have zero idea how this got in my system. I have never had an issue with a previous test under this program and it is ridiculous to think I would intentionally use a prohibited substance (DHCMT) where it’s long term metabolite would remain in my system for months and sometimes years, as I am aware it often does.”

In recent years, numerous fighters have tested positive for M3 metabolite, including most notoriously Jon Jones in 2019. Since then, the UFC, USADA, and NSAC have worked closely to institute non-harsh requirements for fighters who test positive at a lower picogram range.

Kape is scheduled to fight Rogerio Bontorin at UFC 275, which takes place June 11 in Kallang, Singapore. If he wins, it’ll be three in a row for the former RIZIN champ after an 0-2 start to his UFC tenure.

Manel Kape vs. Rogerio Bontorin joins UFC 275 lineup on June 11

Manel Kape will get an opportunity to crack the top 10 at UFC 275.

[autotag]Manel Kape[/autotag] will get an opportunity to crack the top 10 at UFC 275.

Kape (17-6 MMA, 2-0 UFC) meets [autotag]Rogerio Bontorin[/autotag] (16-4-2 MMA, 2-3-1 UFC) June 11 at Singapore Indoor Stadium, promotion officials announced Wednesday.

After dropping his first two octagon bouts, former Rizin bantamweight champion Kape scored back-to-back first-round finishes over Ode Osbourne and most recently Zhalgas Zhumagulov at UFC on ESPN 31 this past December. The 28-year-old was scheduled to face Su Mudaerji at UFC Fight Night 205 last month but withdrew due to personal reasons. He is now booked against his initial octagon debut opponent, Bontorin, who withdrew from their UFC 252 matchup in August 2020 due to injury.

After a 2-0 start to his octagon tenure, Brazil’s Bontorin has gone winless in his past four fights. In that four-fight stretch, Bontorin defeated Matt Schnell by unanimous decision at UFC 262, but his win was overturned when he tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide in an out-of-competition test just two weeks after beating Schnell. His suspension was reduced to three months when it was identified by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that the dietary supplement was tainted.

The current UFC 275 lineup includes:

  • Champ Glover Teixeira vs. Jiri Prochazka – for light heavyweight title
  • Champ Valentina Shevchenko vs. Taila Santos – for women’s flyweight title
  • Marvin Vettori vs. TBA
  • Silvana Gomez Juarez vs. Na Liang
  • Brendan Allen vs. Jacob Malkoun
  • Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Zhang Weili
  • Danaa Batgerel vs. Kyung Ho Kang
  • Orion Cosce vs. Blood Diamond
  • Jack Della Maddalena vs. Ramazan Emeev
  • Seungwoo Choi vs. Josh Culibao
  • Rogerio Bontorin vs. Manel Kape
