Danielle Hunter to incur significant fines for skipping Vikings mandatory minicamp

Vikings pass rusher Danielle Hunter is set to incur significant fines for sitting out mandatory minicamp this week.

Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Danielle Hunter is about to sit out mandatory minicamp, and it’s a decision that can cost him a significant amount of money.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, any player who skips their team’s mandatory minicamp is subject to rolling fines.

Players who sit out the first day can be fined $16,459. That fine is doubled if a player sits out the second day, tallying over $32,000 in fines.

For Hunter, the decision to sit out the Vikings’ two-day mandatory minicamp will cost him $49,379 in fines.

Hunter’s decision to sit out the Vikings minicamp isn’t surprising.

Hunter is due $5.5 million in 2023, a number that’s incredibly minuscule compared to the league’s best pass rushers. As a result, Hunter is hoping to earn a new contract by staying away from the team.

Previously, Rapoport reported that the Vikings have received trade calls for Hunter, who turns 29 in October.

Hunter had 10.5 sacks in 2022 and was named to his third Pro Bowl.

Vikings OLB Danielle Hunter to skip mandatory minicamp

Hunter is skipping mandatory minicamp amid contract talks. He is slated to make only $5.5 million in 2023.

The inevitable has officially been announced.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Minnesota Vikings outside linebacker Danielle Hunter will be skipping mandatory minicamp this week. Hunter wants a new contract and the two sides haven’t been able to come close on a new deal. This will officially make him a holdout.

Teams have been calling the Vikings about Hunter and such news was reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The biggest nugget from that report was that they offered Hunter a “band-aid” resolution to his contract, signaling a raise this year but nothing after that. Considering the history with this organization and Hunter’s contract, that’s not nearly good enough.

Hunter is slated to make only $5.5 million this season with $4.9 million coming in base salary. That’s a pretty paltry number for a top edge rusher in football.

The Vikings are hosting their mandatory minicamp at TCO Performance Center this week on June 13th and 14th.

Up next for the Broncos is mandatory minicamp

After wrapping up OTAs last week, the Broncos are set to hold a mandatory minicamp this week.

The Denver Broncos just wrapped up voluntary organized team activities last week. Up next on the team’s offseason calendar is mandatory minicamp, which is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

“Next [this] week, we start with minicamp,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said on June 8. “When you’re observing, the practices are very similar. The time allotted is a little longer, and there are some things that are different. By and large, if any of you came to an OTA or came to a mini-camp practice, it’d be hard to tell the difference.

“We’re allowed a little bit more time on the field. That’ll start on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then Thursday’s schedule will be shortened because of our time constraints.”

The minicamp practices won’t be open to the public but the team will have a practice session open to media members. Players who skip mandatory camp are subject to fines.

After camp wraps up later this week, players (and coaches) will get a summer break from mid-June until late July.

“The break is healthy, for the coaches as well,” Payton said. “Everyone knows that when we come back, it’s like getting on an aircraft carrier for six months here. You’re here seven days a week well past midnight.”

The break will end when players report back for the start of training camp, which typically begins in late July. The Broncos are expected to announce their training camp schedule sometime this month.

Chargers DC Derrick Ansley on DB Ja’Sir Taylor: ‘He is mature past his age’

Defensive back Ja’Sir Taylor made a great impression on defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley during the #Chargers’ offseason program

The Los Angeles Chargers will rely on their defensive secondary to shut down opponents during the 2023 season, and coordinator Derrick Ansley told the media on Wednesday that one unheralded player seems poised to help in that effort.

2022 sixth-round pick Ja’Sir Taylor, he said, was showing a savviness beyond what he expected, and may factor into the Chargers’ defensive strategy if he wins a spot on the 53-man roster after the preseason.

“He’s mature past his age,” Ansley said of Taylor. “He’s a very quiet kid, very observant. He understands the big picture. He’s working hard, just like how the other stars are working hard. That is going to be an interesting battle once we get to camp.”

Taylor made three starts last season as a rookie and used his elite speed to chase down ball carriers for 22 combined tackles. With just a single pass defensed in 2022, the jury is still out on his ball skills, but with quotes like this coming out of Los Angeles’ mandatory minicamp, Taylor is certainly a player that fans should keep their eyes on.

LOOK: Browns wrap up offseason program after third day of practices on Thursday

Offseason workouts for the #Browns are complete with training camp set to kick off next month.

The third and final day of mandatory minicamp for the Cleveland Browns is in the books. The team held a final practice on Thursday, marking the end of their offseason program until they return to Berea for training camp in July. It was another good day for new wide receiver Elijah Moore who made several impressive catches this week.

Of course, none of this means much since the team was not wearing pads but fans will never be upset with plays that look good out on the field. Let’s take a look at all the sights and sounds from the final day of mandatory camp on Thursday in Berea:

WATCH: Myles Garrett showcased his elite athleticism after practice on Wednesday

Garrett put together an And1 worthy mixtape after the #Browns practice session on Wednesday

Cleveland Browns fans know that edge rusher Myles Garrett is a defensive force of nature, but the display he put on after practice on Wednesday might even surprise those who have followed the team closely over the last few years.

Following the Browns’ workout at mandatory minicamp where the offense showed out for the second-straight day, Garrett stole the show for Cleveland’s defense in spectacular fashion with some dunks that were straight out of an NBA Street video game.

It is unclear if the first slam was an alley-oop from the coaching assistant off to the side or a pass to himself off the backboard, but either way, the hops necessary to complete the move were tremendously impressive.

He followed that jam up with two more dunks that could have won him a place in the NBA’s all-star weekend, proving that the finesse needed for the first was well within his skill set.

For the sake of the Browns’ defensive future, Garrett would be wise to lay off the extra stress on his knees, but these stuff shots were well worth the risk to show off what he can do on the hardwood… even if he was playing on grass.

Browns QB Deshaun Watson is back to having fun on the football field

On the second day of mandatory minicamp #Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson talked about having fun on the gridiron

Speaking with the media on the second day of mandatory minicamp Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson talked about having fun again on the football field. After being away from the game for so an extended period following his suspension last season, Watson said that last year he focused on getting back into the swing of things.

During his availability, he talked about working with head coach Kevin Stefanki and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt to become more comfortable in the offense. Watson looked more relaxed and confident both on the field and while speaking with the media. Let’s take a look at what he had to say on Wednesday in Berea:

Todd Bowles “expects everybody” to attend mandatory minicamp

Bowles is expecting every Buccaneers player to attend mandatory minicamp, including LB Devin White.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers HC [autotag]Todd Bowles[/autotag] made his stance clear when it comes to mandatory minicamp.

Bowles was asked on Tuesday after the first day of Week 3 OTAs about mandatory minicamp, and he assured media that he’s looking forward to every Bucs player reporting when it kicks off on June 13.

“It’s mandatory,” Bowles said. “I expect everybody to be here.”

Bowles told reporters that he expects injured players to still show up, even if they aren’t participating. But he was also asked about LB Devin White, who is currently in a contract dispute with the Bucs, and he repeated his answer to the original question affirming that he expects all players to come to camp.

White didn’t show up to OTAs (or at least hasn’t yet, with two days left to do so), but that doesn’t necessarily mean he intends to skip out on mandatory minicamp. If he does, though, he could be fined by the team for not showing up. Whether or not a team fines a player for an unexcused absence is up to them.

It’s currently unknown if White plans to attend minicamp or not, but Bowles certainly seems to be expecting him when they day rolls around.

Details emerge regarding robbery of two Browns players over the weekend

New details emerged on Tuesday regarding the robbery of two Browns players over the weekend

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

New details have emerged regarding crimes committed against two Cleveland Browns over the weekend.

Defensive back Greg Newsome II and lineman Perrion Winfrey were the victims of an armed robbery by six masked men early on Monday morning. Neither were harmed during the incident but, according to ESPN, the suspects left the scene in Newsome’s vehicle with stolen jewelry in tow.

Running back Demetric Felton also had his car stolen over the weekend, though preliminary reports haven’t indicated that he was present at the time of the theft.

It is worth noting that quarterback Deshaun Watson was the victim of car theft earlier in the year, and at this time it is unclear whether any of these incidents are related.

News about the spate of crimes came on Tuesday just before the Browns reported to Berea for Cleveland’s mandatory minicamp. Developments in the story are sure to follow, so stay tuned to Browns Wire for all the facts about this regrettable incident.

Chiefs begin Phase 3 of offseason program on Monday

The #Chiefs kick off Phase 3 of the offseason program on Monday with the first of three sessions of organized team activities.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to begin Phase 3 of the offseason program on Monday, May 22.

The team has completed one week of Phase 2 activities, putting in some good work in the weight room, but now things are set to ramp up during Phase 3. The team will get a chance to participate in voluntary workouts called organized team activities (OTAs) in addition to a mandatory minicamp to close things out until training camp.

OTAs are entirely voluntary. They still don’t include any padded practices or live contact. They serve as an opportunity for the team to get both their veterans and rookies on the practice field with the inclusion of team drills for the first time during the offseason.

Here is what Phase 3 entails, via the NFL’s offseason workout press release:

Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or ‘OTAs’. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Article 22 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement stipulates that clubs may hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players. This minicamp, noted below, must occur during Phase Three of the offseason program”

The Chiefs had strong attendance to start Phase 2 of the offseason program, but you can expect that Phase 3 will also have few absences. One player that fans should be keeping a close eye on is DT Chris Jones, who only has one year remaining on his contract and is looking for a new deal.

Monday, May 22 will kick off the first of three sessions of OTAs for Kansas City. They’ll have a total of 10 practices spread out over the three sessions. You can find the dates for each of those workouts here.
