VAR was an absolute disgrace in Chelsea’s loss to Manchester United

Rough night for VAR.

You won’t find many Premier League fans who are supporters of the VAR replay system in its current form, and that’ll be especially true in West London.

Chelsea took on Manchester United on Monday at Stamford Bridge in what was a crucial match for the Blues, and they ended up getting a disastrous display from VAR — all resulting in a 2-0 Manchester United win.

The controversy started in the 21st minute when United’s Harry Maguire kicked out at the groin of Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi. It should have been a clear red card, but when VAR checked the incident, Maguire wasn’t shown a card at all.

Even without acknowledging that a kick to the groin warrants a red card on its own merits, there was precedent to send Maguire off for that contact. It was virtually the same play that had Tottenham’s Heung-min Son sent off for violent contact on Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger in December.

There’s no consistency with VAR, which allows the system to continue to fail.

Maguire being allowed to stay on the pitch would prove huge later in the match, but we’ll get to that in a bit.

A VAR mistake would hurt Chelsea again in the second half. This time, wiping a goal completely off the board. Kurt Zouma scored in the 55th minute off a corner, but when VAR took a look, it ruled that Cesar Azpilicueta committed a foul before the goal. What VAR didn’t see was that Azpilicueta was pushed, and even the NBC broadcasters were ripping the Premier League’s replay decisions.

Around 10 minutes later, Maguire — who, again, shouldn’t have been in the game anymore — doubled Manchester United’s lead with his first goal of the Premier League season. Of course this happened …

And just for good measure, VAR wiped off another Chelsea goal when Olivier Giroud was ruled offside by mere inches.

It was a brutal night for Chelsea, and fans were understandably fed up with VAR.

With the loss, Chelsea holds a one-point lead for fourth place over Tottenham. Sheffield United and Manchester United are also within three points of Chelsea.

Both teams are on three-game winning streaks without defeat ahead of their Week 26 clash, and the Red Devils travel to West London missing at least six first team players. Solskjaer recently told reporters Paul Pogba remains sidelined due to injury, as is the case for Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Axel Tuanzebe, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, and reserve goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Former Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is back in contention following suspension. His return may see Bruno Fernandes move into more of an attacking role than was seen in his debut against the Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The visit to Stamford Bridge could also see January signing Odion Ighalo—on loan from Shanghai Shenhua—make his United debut after Solskjaer confirmed he’d be part of his squad.

Chelsea has failed to beat United in its past five meetings across all competitions, and its last victory over the Red Devils came at Wembley Stadium in the 2018 FA Cup final. Alvaro Morata—now at Atletico Madrid—provided the only goal when the Blues last toppled United at the Bridge.

Manager Frank Lampard hopes incumbent striker Tammy Abraham is fit to start after nursing an ankle injury. Michy Batshuayi could be called upon should the England frontman fail to recover, with the Belgian having struck for Chelsea when it fell 2-1 at home to United in the Carabao Cup fourth round in October.

United States star Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are also in the running to return from injury, with the latter hoping to make his first appearance of the 2019-20 campaign.

Solskjaer’s setup will be of interest if United prioritizes a fast counter, as has been the case in most of its “major” games this season, with several new faces out to impress in particular.

The 179th Manchester derby takes place on Saturday when hosts City hopes to oust rivals United and cut the 11-point gap against Premier League leaders Liverpool. United lost 3-1 when it last traveled to Etihad Stadium in Nov. 2018, when Anthony Martial scored the visiting side’s only goal from the penalty spot.

Martial missed Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur after he suffered an injury in the recent 2-2 draw against Aston Villa. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday that Martial could be involved in the derby, but wasn’t sure yet if he would start.

Paul Pogba is still nursing an ankle injury and won’t return for United. Guardiola said in late November that it would be a miracle if Sergio Aguero regained fitness in time to be featured, while winger Leroy Sane and centre-back Aymeric Laporte remain long-term absentees for City.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is also a doubt, meaning Guardiola could retain Angelino at left-back after benching Benjamin Mendy in favor of the Spaniard during the recent 4-1 win over Burnley.

This will be Solskjaer’s first visit to Etihad as the United manager. He’s hoping to revive some of his side’s confidence in the backyard of its noisy neighbors. Prior to its loss at Etihad last November, United was unbeaten in three visits to this ground and won two of those.

Liverpool will relish the thought of third-place City dropping more points after the team recently drew 2-2 at Newcastle United, allowing Leicester City to establish breathing room in second place.

The mid-week win over the Spurs saw United climb up to sixth, going undefeated four league matches in a row for the first time this season. It also marked the team’s first run of more than two wins this term. That being said, the result against Jose Mourinho’s side was also its first win in four games.

City has dropped just four Premier League points at home this season and is unbeaten in six at Etihad, but United hopes the derby occasion will give it the might to topple the hosts.

Tottenham boasts a perfect record in three matches under Mourinho so far, having most recently defeated Bournemouth 3-2 at home on Saturday. However, that was also the third time the team has conceded two goals in as many matches under the new coach. The Red Devils extended their winless run to three matches after drawing 2-2 at home to Villa on Sunday, the seventh time in their last eight games that they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet.

Lucas Moura scored twice when Tottenham thrashed United 3-0 in its last trip to Old Trafford in August 2018, when Mourinho was still employed by the latter. The North Londoners failed to score in four visits to the grounds prior to that, ending their drought in sensational style.

The Special One finds himself back in the away dugout, seeking what would be his 10th career victory against United in his 21st meeting. He’s only lost three times in those previous 20 clashes, twice while he was Chelsea manager and once at Inter Milan. Mourinho has traveled to Old Trafford on nine occasions and won in three of those—twice with the Blues in 2005 and once in March 2013 with Real Madrid.

United has lost once at home this season (three wins, three draws), while the Spurs clinched their first away league victory this term when Mourinho’s squad won 3-2 at West Ham in his debut.

Solskjaer is under some pressure to produce a win against his club’s former coach nearly one year after he took over at United, initially in a caretaker role. The Norwegian isn’t expected to have midfield star Paul Pogba back from an ankle injury until mid-December, while defenders Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are chasing fitness.

Mourinho appears to have had a rejuvenating effect on Dele Alli, who has scored or assisted in each of the three games and netted twice in the win over Bournemouth.

Reputations are on the line at Old Trafford when United seeks to fend off Mourinho’s soaring Spurs in what looks to be a vital fixture in the race for European qualification.

Manchester United is enjoying its best run so far this season but could face a harsh return from the international break on Sunday when the team travels to face a Sheffield United team unbeaten in five games. The Blades sit fifth in the Premier League, one point above Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side coming into Week 13, making this a surprisingly valuable fixture in the jostle for a Top 6 spot.

The Norwegian has led his team to just one defeat in its last seven games, though its upcoming hosts will take comfort in knowing that one loss came on the road to Bournemouth.

The Red Devils have traveled to Bramall Lane just once since 2000, a 2-1 road win in November 2006, when two goals from Wayne Rooney completed a huge comeback.

United has won its last six successive meetings with Sheffield (including two away wins) and hasn’t lost to the south Yorkshire outfit since the inaugural Premier League season (Aug. 1992). However, Chris Wilder has his underdogs operating above its means and looks capable of a surprise despite the gulf in pedigree.

Anthony Martial’s return to fitness has enhanced Solskajer’s side in recent weeks, transforming a swift United attack that already comprised Marcus Rashford and Daniel Hames. However, Sheffield’s three-man defense has proved problematic for opposing teams.

Premier League leaders Liverpool squeaked out of Bramall Lane with a narrow 1-0 win when it traveled there in September, while second place Leicester City only edged a 2-1 result.

Although it’s somewhat out of character for promoted teams, Sheffield’s best form so far this season has arguably come away from home, where it’s yet to lose this season (one win, five draws). That’s compared with a record of 3-3 in six home games this campaign.

Ashley Young is back in the selection for Solskjaer after serving a one-game ban, although 19-year-old Brandon Williams could keep his place at left-back for United after impressing in his early performances. Diogo Dalot, Nemanja Matic, Luke Shaw and Axel Tuanzebe each recently returned to training for Sunday’s guests, although it’s unlikely we’ll see any of those options start in Sheffield.

On-loan goalkeeper Dean Henderson will miss out for the first time this season due to the fact that he can’t be featured against his parent club, which is a blessing for the Red Devils. Sheffield United reserve Simon Moore is likely to come in between the posts as a result. Wilder’s main injury concern is centre-back John Egan, who could be replaced by Phil Jagielka if he’s not ready to return from a recent calf injury.
