Pep Guardiola told Tim Ream he’d be playing for him if he were 24, not 34 (he’s 35)

The Man City boss is a big fan of Ream — now he just needs to get his age right

Tim Ream is winning a lot of new fans with his displays for Fulham this season, including Man City head coach Pep Guardiola.

Now Pep just needs to work on getting Ream’s age right.

Ream was included in the U.S. national team’s World Cup squad on Wednesday, as Gregg Berhalter rewarded the defender for his excellent campaign in the Premier League.

Speaking on ESPN’s “Futbol Americas” after releasing his roster, Berhalter recounted a conversation between Ream and Guardiola after last weekend’s Premier League match between Man City and Fulham.

“Tim Ream just played against Man City and after the game, Guardiola walks up to him and says, ‘If you were 24 instead of 34, you’d be playing for me,'” Berhalter said.

“So Tim said, ‘It’s too bad I’m not 34, I’m 35.'”

‘Have you watched any Fulham games lately?’

Despite his strong campaign with Fulham, Ream was a somewhat surprising inclusion on the World Cup squad because he hasn’t played for the USMNT in more than a year.

Asked at a press conference about selecting Ream, Berhalter responded:  “Have you watched any Fulham games lately? Then you know why we brought him in.

“He was in the Premier League three years ago, and he struggled, the whole team struggled. And he went to the Championship and he started performing better, and they got promoted. And now he’s in the Premier League, and he’s a top performer for his team. It’s really hard to ignore stuff like that.

“And by the way, he’s been a guy that’s been with us since day one. So to me, all the pieces were aligned to bring him back into the squad. Based on what we’re seeing, the level he’s playing at, he’s ready to play in a World Cup for sure.”

Erling Haaland is redefining what’s possible on a weekly basis

It already seems impossible to dream up a ceiling for Haaland’s accomplishments

Erling Haaland has been a Premier League player for two months, and it already seems impossible to dream up a ceiling for his accomplishments.

The Man City star seems to be redefining what’s possible for a striker on a weekly basis. His latest salvo was a hat trick in a 6-3 derby demolition of Manchester United on Sunday.

In stops at Molde, Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund, Haaland proved impossible to stop from scoring. At Manchester City, though, he’s taken it to another level. Rather than facing a learning curve with his move to the Premier League, Haaland is forcing the league to adapt to him.

Week after week, Premier League teams have proven utterly incapable of doing so.

Haaland has played eight Premier League games for Man City thus far; he’s scored 14 goals. He has three hat tricks, one in each of his last three home games.

It almost goes without saying that Haaland’s three hat tricks in his first eight Premier League games is the fastest a player has ever reached that mark. The next quickest? Michael Owen, who took 48 games to accomplish the same feat.

Haaland has been supercharged by his placement in this City team. He already seems to be on a different wavelength with Kevin De Bruyne, who has already assisted five of Haaland’s goals this season.

The latest was a textbook display of the Belgian vision and the Norwegian’s relentless athleticism.

Haaland seems to be aware that playing in this City side has put pretty much any goalscoring feat on the table.

“You can feel it all the time,” Haaland told Sky Sports. “You can see the passes we give each other. We always want to go forward and to attack. It’s what I love about the team. In the end, it’s amazing. There is nothing more to say.”

There will be plenty more to say, though, because the ceiling on what Haaland and City can do this season has been lifted.

Man City’s Erling Haaland scores first-ever goal at Lambeau Field

Erling Haaland of Manchester City scored the first ever goal at Lambeau Field on Saturday night.

The celebration was shortened thanks to a weather delay, but Manchester City’s Erling Haaland still scored the first-ever goal at Lambeau Field during Saturday’s friendly match in Green Bay.

Haaland, a prized acquisition during the summer transfer market, redirected a cross from Jack Grealish to put home the opening goal after 12 minutes.

Saturday’s match is the first in the long history of Lambeau Field.

The match was delayed immediately following the goal due to inclement weather.

Man City, one of the best teams in England, is facing Bayern Munich, a giant of German soccer.

Here’s another view of the goal, via ESPN:

The game has been well-attended. Announced attendance at Lambeau Field is over 78,000. Lightning around the stadium has caused delays, both before and during the contest.

The Packers will hope Haaland isn’t the first No. 9 to score at Lambeau this season. Rookie receiver Christian Watson, the team’s highest-drafted receiver since 2002, is wearing No. 9 for the Packers in 2022.

It’s official: Erling Haaland has completed his Man City transfer

The Premier League champions will look even more formidable next season

Manchester City has confirmed that superstar forward Erling Haaland has completed his transfer from Borussia Dortmund, signing a five-year contract with the Premier League champions.

City announced last month that it had reached an agreement in principle with Dortmund over a deal for a relatively bargain price of €60 million ($63m), according to multiple reports.

“This is a proud day for me and my family,” Haaland, whose father Alf-Inge played for City in the early 2000s, told City’s official website.

“I have always watched City and have loved doing so in recent seasons. You can’t help but admire their style of play, it’s exciting and they create a lot of chances, which is perfect for a player like me.

“There are so many world-class players in this squad and Pep [Guardiola] is one of the greatest managers of all-time, so I believe I am in the right place to fulfill my ambitions.

“I want to score goals, win trophies and improve as a footballer and I am confident I can do that here. This is a great move for me and I can’t wait to get started in pre-season.”

Though he’s still only 21, Haaland is undoubtedly one of the top strikers in the world already, having scored an incredible 86 goals in 89 games during his two-and-a-half-year run with Borussia Dortmund.

Steve Kerr reacts to Mohamed Salah’s penalty kick goal in Liverpool vs. Manchester City

After Mohamed Salah blasted a penalty kick into the back of net to give Liverpool the lead over Manchester City, Steve Kerr chimed in on Twitter.

On Sunday, Steve Kerr took a break from NBA draft prep to watch the English Premier League. Headlining the EPL’s slate of soccer fixtures was a battle between two top of the table clubs.

Liverpool’s Jürgen Klopp led the defending Premier League champions into Ethiad Stadium for a matchup against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. After 13 minutes of scoreless football, Sadio Mané provided Liverpool’s first chance for a score.

After streaking into the box, Liverpool’s No. 10 was clipped from behind by Kyle Walker. As Mané fell to the ground, the referee quickly blew the whistle to award Liverpool with a penalty kick.

Former Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah blasted the penalty kick past Ederson Santana de Moraes to give Liverpool the 1-0 advantage.

Following Salah’s penalty strike, the Golden State Warriors head coach chimed in on Twitter to celebrate the goal.

Via @SteveKerr on Twitter:

However, for Liverpool, Salah’s penalty wasn’t enough to close out the home club. Gabriel Jesus was able to sneak a crafty goal by Allison Becker to tie the game. The 1-1 score stood for the remainder of the match, resulting in a draw between Liverpool and Manchester City.

Kerr, a noted Liverpool fan, often weighs in on social media when The Reds are in action in the Champions League or the Premiership.

Next on the schedule, Liverpool will travel to the Midland of England for a tilt against Jaime Vardy and first-place Leicester City.

United lost 3-1 when it last traveled to Etihad Stadium in Nov. 2018, when Anthony Martial scored the visiting side’s only goal from the penalty spot.

Martial missed Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur after he suffered an injury in the recent 2-2 draw against Aston Villa. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday that Martial could be involved in the derby, but wasn’t sure yet if he would start.

Paul Pogba is still nursing an ankle injury and won’t return for United. Guardiola said in late November that it would be a miracle if Sergio Aguero regained fitness in time to be featured, while winger Leroy Sane and centre-back Aymeric Laporte remain long-term absentees for City.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is also a doubt, meaning Guardiola could retain Angelino at left-back after benching Benjamin Mendy in favor of the Spaniard during the recent 4-1 win over Burnley.

This will be Solskjaer’s first visit to Etihad as the United manager. He’s hoping to revive some of his side’s confidence in the backyard of its noisy neighbors. Prior to its loss at Etihad last November, United was unbeaten in three visits to this ground and won two of those.

Liverpool will relish the thought of third-place City dropping more points after the team recently drew 2-2 at Newcastle United, allowing Leicester City to establish breathing room in second place.

The mid-week win over the Spurs saw United climb up to sixth, going undefeated four league matches in a row for the first time this season. It also marked the team’s first run of more than two wins this term. That being said, the result against Jose Mourinho’s side was also its first win in four games.

City has dropped just four Premier League points at home this season and is unbeaten in six at Etihad, but United hopes the derby occasion will give it the might to topple the hosts.
