The 179th Manchester derby takes place on Saturday when hosts City hopes to oust rivals United and cut the 11-point gap against Premier League leaders Liverpool. The Citizens have triumphed in each of their last two meetings with the Red Devils, but Pep Guardiola’s side has won just two of its last four league games heading into Week 16.

United lost 3-1 when it last traveled to Etihad Stadium in Nov. 2018, when Anthony Martial scored the visiting side’s only goal from the penalty spot.

Martial missed Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur after he suffered an injury in the recent 2-2 draw against Aston Villa. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday that Martial could be involved in the derby, but wasn’t sure yet if he would start.

Paul Pogba is still nursing an ankle injury and won’t return for United. Guardiola said in late November that it would be a miracle if Sergio Aguero regained fitness in time to be featured, while winger Leroy Sane and centre-back Aymeric Laporte remain long-term absentees for City.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is also a doubt, meaning Guardiola could retain Angelino at left-back after benching Benjamin Mendy in favor of the Spaniard during the recent 4-1 win over Burnley.

This will be Solskjaer’s first visit to Etihad as the United manager. He’s hoping to revive some of his side’s confidence in the backyard of its noisy neighbors. Prior to its loss at Etihad last November, United was unbeaten in three visits to this ground and won two of those.

Liverpool will relish the thought of third-place City dropping more points after the team recently drew 2-2 at Newcastle United, allowing Leicester City to establish breathing room in second place.

The mid-week win over the Spurs saw United climb up to sixth, going undefeated four league matches in a row for the first time this season. It also marked the team’s first run of more than two wins this term. That being said, the result against Jose Mourinho’s side was also its first win in four games.

City has dropped just four Premier League points at home this season and is unbeaten in six at Etihad, but United hopes the derby occasion will give it the might to topple the hosts.

Frank Lampard has Chelsea fans in dreamland with how he’s turned the club’s fortunes around in such a short period of time since taking over as manager. Even more impressive is that he’s done it all while the club is under a transfer ban. Implementing young talents such as Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Christian Pulisic has done wonders for the team’s form and long-term sustainability. It could be argued that the transfer ban forced this infusion of youth that likely wouldn’t have happened if Chelsea could splash the cash on top transfers like they usually do. The Blues actually come into this big matchup in third place, one point above City.

The international break has left Manchester City alone with its thoughts after a demoralizing 3-1 loss to Liverpool. With Liverpool now nine points ahead in the title race, Man City cannot afford another misstep or it may fall out of the chase altogether. Injuries to its backline have really hurt City. Aymeric Laporte’s long-term absence from the lineup has had a lasting effect on the entire team. Goals haven’t been an issue for City’s extremely talented squad, but conceding them at the wrong times certainly has. A loss to Chelsea would be the worst case scenario for this side. Can the team withstand the pressure and get the job done?

Pep Guardiola screaming “TWICE!’ to the heavens is soccer’s newest, best meme

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola screaming ‘twice’ to the heavens during loss to Liverpool is perfect reaction.

Manchester City lost to Liverpool 3-1 on Sunday. It was a statement win from Liverpool, who now sit eight points clear of second place and look to all like they’re actually going to go ahead and win the league this year.

City, on the other hand, are currently in fourth. They have just 17 points off 12 matches played, the fewest points City manager Pep Guardiola has had at this point in a season in his coaching career.

Guardiola isn’t handling this all super well. The loss to Liverpool began as a soccer match for Guardiola, and ended as a one-man Greek tragedy with him roving the sidelines, screaming to the gods to spare him any more indignities.

Actually, he screamed “twice.” The clip came from after what he perceived as a second missed handball call from the officials, so he ran over to the sideline official and screamed “twice!” while holding two fingers up. Then he screamed “twice” again.

Then, to make sure that the gods themselves heard him, he tilted his head to the sky and screamed “twice!” It was haunting. It was beautiful. It led to an outrageous amount of jokes on the internet.

Twice. TWICE. TWIIIIICE!!!!!!
