Panthers mock draft roundup 1.0: Tracking the latest 2024 projections

Early (multi-round)mock drafts are sending some of the nation’s top wideouts to Carolina.

In case you haven’t heard, the Carolina Panthers don’t have a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Yeah, yeah, we know. This is a particularly tough year not to have one considering, well, it’d be the No. 1. Alas, we shall trek and track forward.

So, instead of tracking mock drafts this offseason for Carolina’s first-round projections (because we can’t), we’ll search for the predictions on their second-round pickโ€”their first of the spring.

Here is our opening edition of the 2024 mock draft roundup:

Panthers 2024 mock draft 3.0: Post-Super Bowl LVIII edition

With the Super Bowl in the books and the combine less than two weeks away, here’s our latest 2024 mock draft for the Panthers.

As the lights on Super Bowl LVII had faded, the focus of the NFL now starts to shift towards Aprilโ€”for the 2024 NFL draft.

So, with the combine set to kick off in less than two weeks, who should Carolina Panthers fans have their eyes on?

Here’s a post-Super Bowl, pre-combine mock to hold you off . . .

Virginia Wide Receiver Malik Washington: A first-round talent that no one is talking about

Virginia WR Malik Washington showed first-round talent but never gets mentioned in that class of receiver

It’s fair to call this 2024 Draft class ‘deep’ at the wide receiver position. With potentially as many as nine receivers hearing their name called within the first round. One prospect that isn’t quite lumped in with those higher end receivers as much as he deserves is Virginia’s Malik Washington.

On paper, it’s fair to add skepticism to a receiver who is 5-8 and 192 pounds going among the top 32 players in a loaded draft. What Washington lacks in height and weight, he more than makes up for on the football field, where he was one of the most dominant players across the country this last season. With 110 catches for 1,426 yards and 10 touchdowns, Washington was downright uncoverable on a team that had, at best, shaky quarterback play.

Washington is an elite route runner with a ridiculously good ability to adjust his body to make tough catches. Washington’s speed, burst, and yards-after-contact ability rank near the top of this class. All in all, Washington is simply a fantastic playmaker who has put it all together on the field and can clearly play at a high level in the NFL.

While teams may be hesitant to take Washington too early because of his “size limitations” it is clear when you put on the tape that he is one of the best wide receivers in this entire draft class and is going to instantly make an offense better from day one of entering the league.

Browns meet with UVA WR Malik Washington at East/West Shrine

The prospect meetings are underway!

The 2024 NFL draft process is in full swing now, and the Cleveland Browns have tacked University of Virginia wide receiver Malik Washington to the list of players they have begun meeting with (according to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo).

The Shrine Game and Reese’s Senior Bowl have come to a close as we trek toward the NFL Scouting Combine at the end of the month. As the Browns look to get better this offseason, the draft is the key way to keep the roster young and inexpensive.

Measuring in at just 5-foot-8 and 192 pounds at the East/West Shrine Game, Washington is an undersized gadget/slot who thrives with the football in his hands after the catch. This past season with the Cavaliers, Washington racked up over 1,400 yards and nine touchdowns on 110 catches. He was fourth in the nation in yards after the catch, with half of his yards tacked on with the ball in his hands.

The Browns will likely address the wide receiver position multiple times this offseason, overhauling the backend of that room. If they double up in the 2024 NFL draft, landing Washington in a later round is firmly on the table.

4 offensive standouts from the East-West Shrine Bowl practices

Both offenses improved each day at East-West Shrine Bowl practices. Who were the 4 standouts on offense?

The New Orleans Saints were busy scouting prospects at the East-West Shrine Bowl, and over the course of the week the offenses for both teams slowly improved. Both the West and East offenses had a very successful red zone period on Monday. The offensive success grew as the offensive lineโ€™s chemistry grew.

Due to the nature of one-on-ones, receivers tended to shine over the course of four practices. The defense defended receivers better in team, but there were still a few receivers who still got open consistently. Here are my standouts after observing Shrine Bowl practices:

20 Shrine Bowl players to know before practices kick off

20 Shrine Bowl prospects to know for the 2024 NFL draft before practices kick off

The 99th annual East-West Shrine Bowl week is coming up quickly. Over 100 draft prospects will go through practices and interviews with scouting personnel from all 32 NFL teams in hopes of improving their stock for the 2024 NFL draft.

This year’s Shrine Bowl moves to The Star in Frisco, Texas. Practices kick off on Saturday and run through Tuesday, with the game scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff on Thursday, February 1st.

Here are some of the top players to know from the East and West rosters, which will be coached by current NFL assistants across several teams.

Panthers 2024 mock draft 1.0: Starting from scratch edition

No general manager, no head coach, no first-round pick, no problem. We’ll still give you our first Panthers mock draft of the 2024 offseason.

The Carolina Panthers don’t have much as they enter the first weekend of the 2024 offseason.

They don’t have a general manager, they don’t have a head coach and they don’t even have first-round pickโ€”an especially miserable prospect given that they finished with a league-worst 15 losses. So, yeah, there’s not much hope to be had either.

But even with the Panthers seemingly starting back from scratch, let’s try to give you some of that hope anyway!

2025 4-Star QB out of Maryland has placed Texas A&M in his Top 8 program list

Texas A&M has landed in 2025 4-Star quarterback Malik Washington’s Top 8 program list late last week.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko might have dethroned Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin at the “transfer portal king” after landing 19 players from the transfer total, including 10 players since Thursday. Shifting to the 2025 recruiting class, Elko’s first as the Aggie’s HC, one of the top signal callers, has narrowed his program list to eight as of last week.

2025 four-star quarterback Malik Washington, who is entering his senior season at Archbishop Spalding in Severn, Maryland, released his Top 8 program list, which includes Maryland, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Penn State, Oregon, and Texas A&M.

According to 247Sports, Washington is currently positioned as the 20th-ranked quarterback and the 6th-ranked player in Maryland. It is coming off his impressive 2023 junior campaign, throwing for 2,093 yards, 21 touchdowns and just nine interceptions, including six rushing touchdowns on the year.

With just one commit in the 2025 cycle, adding a talented future duel-threat signal caller like Malik Washington would go a long way in landing a bevy of talented prospects moving forward.

2025 four-star QB has Penn State in top six

Penn State makes top six for four-star QB in 2025

Despite the negative discourse that currently surrounds Penn State and their former five-star quarterback, [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag], the struggles in the 2023-24 season doesn’t seem to have deterred others around the country from viewing the Nittany Lions in a positive light.

Penn State was able to keep their class of 2024 commit, [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag], and got him to sign during the early signing period.

They also have a commitment from 2025 three-star quarterback, [autotag]Bekkem Kritza[/autotag], under their belts already.

Now, the Nittany Lions have made the top six of 2025 four-star quarterback and coveted recruit [autotag]Malik Washington[/autotag].

The 6’4″ 200 pound Maryland native has been high on Penn State’s list throughout his recruitment, getting him in for nine unofficial visits so far. The last time he visited was during the Michigan game.

Others who made his list are Texas A&M, Oregon, Maryland, Syracuse and Virginia Tech.

Washington is ranked as the 20th best quarterback in the country and No. 6 overall player in the state of Maryland, according to On3’s industry rankings.

But despite Penn State already having a commitment in the class of 2025, that has not deterred his interest in the Nittany Lions according to Ryan Snyder of On3 (subscription required).

Washington told Snyder he knows he’ll have to compete no matter which program he chooses to play for.

With Penn State hiring new offensive coordinator [autotag]Andy Kotelnicki[/autotag], a new relationship will have to be formed between the two, something that Kotelnicki told him he’s excited to do.

Washington said they haven’t met yet, but that they have been in communication.

As far as where the Nittany Lions stand with the four-star quarterback, Snyder was told that all six schools on his list are pretty even for him right now despite Penn State holding the edge in On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine.

According to those projections, Penn State is in the lead with a 63.5% chance to sign him, while Maryland is second with a 12.8% chance and Virginia Tech is third with a 11.0% chance.

There is still a long way to go in his recruitment, but this is a good sign for the Nittany Lions as they enter another era with a new offensive coordinator.
