Michigan basketball analyst omits Malik Hall from top players list

A Michigan basketball analyst isn’t too fond of Malik Hall:

Malik Hall has been a key cog of Michigan State’s basketball program over the past four seasons, and the Spartans got a huge boost when the veteran decided to come back for one more fifth and final year in 2023-24.

Former Michigan basketball player, and current analyst, Ant Wright has been very involved in the Big Ten basketball scene on Twitter. In his latest edition, Wright ranked the top five power forwards in the conference. The list consisted of new Michigan PF, Tennessee transfer Oliver Nkamhoua in the top spot followed by Coleman Hawkins (Illinois), Dawson Garcia (Minnesota), Tyler Wahl (Wisconsin) and Donta Scott (Maryland), leaving Hall off of the list.

LSJ’s Graham Couch provides thoughts on impact of Malik Hall returning to MSU for 2023-24 season

See what Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal thinks about Malik Hall returning to MSU for another season

For a second straight day, Michigan State basketball received great news relating to their roster structure for the 2023-24 season.

Tyson Walker announced he was returning for another year at Michigan State on Monday. On Tuesday, Malik Hall followed suit. Hall battled injuries throughout this past season, but still appeared in 23 games and averaged 8.9 and 4.3 rebounds off the bench.

With both Walker and Hall announcing their return to Michigan State for next season, the Spartans are expected to be a true Big Ten title and national championship contenders in 2023-24.

Click on the tweet below to check out what Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal thinks will be the outcome of Hall’s return for next year’s Spartans team:

Malik Hall announces return to Michigan State basketball for 2023-24 season

Malik Hall announces return to Michigan State for 2023-24 season

Heading into the offseason, Michigan State basketball head coach Tom Izzo said he wanted to keep the band together. One day after leading scorer Tyson Walker announced his return to the program for a fifth year, Malik Hall did the same, and Izzo is one step closer to that goal.

This was a bit of a frustrating season for Hall, who will want to come in next year and end his career with the Spartans on a higher note. Hall struggled with injuries throughout the year and never looked quite right, and ended up going 0-for-10 from three in postseason play when the team desperately needed some perimeter help on both ends of the floor.

Hall coming back another year does send a big message though: this team is gunning for a national championship.

3 Michigan State basketball players we are waiting on decisions from

MSU is waiting on the decision from three players about their future with the program

Michigan State’s basketball season came to a disappointing end with a Sweet 16 loss to Kansas State. While the singular game was unfortunate, the season can still be considered a success.

Now, the team has moved into offseason, which means roster construction mode. Michigan State is in an interesting spot: It has a blend of returning players and a top freshman class coming in.

It appears Joey Hauser has decided to move on, as expected, but three more decisions must be made before Michigan State can start constructing its 2023-24 roster:

Malik Hall is the X-factor for Michigan State versus USC

One @TheSpartansWire writer named #MichiganState’s Malik Hall as a key piece vs Drew Peterson & #USC. #MarchMadness

The USC Trojans and Michigan State Spartans face off on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. With the Trojans coming off a tough loss to Arizona State, there are a lot of questions to be answered.

However, the Spartans provide their own fair share of questions after losing to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament. Nonetheless, the Trojans are underdogs, and they have their hands full.

With the game coming up, Spartans Wire has provided a ton of insights on Michigan State. Cory Linsner of Spartans Wire named Malik Hall as his X-factor for Michigan State:

“A 6-foot-9 wing strikes a clear matchup problem for the Spartans, but there is one man that can step up to make things happen on the defensive end of the court for MSU, and that is Malik Hall,” Linsner wrote. “Hall, a 6’8″ wing, can match Peterson’s size to avoid the post game, while having quick feet to stay with the Trojans’ standout. If MSU is to win this game, and move on to the Round of 32, Malik Hall is going to have to bring his A-game.”

Hall is averaging 9.2 points per game with 4.2 rebounds on the year, but as Linsner mentions, his defense is going to be a factor for the Spartans against USC. With Drew Peterson expected to play despite battling injuries lately, Hall will likely have the tough task of guarding him.

Hall has also been dealing with injuries, so in many ways this could come down to which player feels better — and plays better — on Friday.

Michigan State basketball’s x-factor against USC

Michigan State has one player who is a true ‘x-factor’ in the team’s matchup against USC on Friday:

Michigan State has checked in as the No. 7 seed in the East region of the NCAA Tournament and is set to face off against the USC Trojans. USC poses a very interesting matchup with Michigan State, and is going to put the pressure on one Spartan to bring his A-game on the defensive end of the floor.

While everyone knows USC star Boogie Ellis, I believe the true x-factor on the Trojans team is Drew Peterson. Peterson is a 6’9″ wing that averages 14 points per game, but the key is he is averaging over 15 points per game in wins for USC, while only averaging around 10 points per game in the Trojans losses. Limiting Peterson on the offensive end should be of the upmost priority for the Spartans.

A 6-foot-9 wing strikes a clear matchup problem for the Spartans, but there is one man that can step up to make things happen on the defensive end of the court for MSU, and that is Malik Hall.

Hall, a 6’8″ wing can match Peterson’s size to avoid the post game, while having quick feet to stay with the Trojans standout.

If MSU is to win this game, and move on to the round of 32, Malik Hall is going to have to bring his A-game.

Michigan State basketball: Malik Hall, Tyson Walker, Jason Whitens to all walk on senior day

Malik Hall, Tyson Walker, Jason Whitens will all walk on senior day

Michigan State basketball will have its senior day ceremony on Saturday during the home game against Ohio State. Three Spartans are set to walk in that ceremony, although all three are undecided on their futures.

Kyle Austin of MLive.com reported that Malik Hall, Tyson Walker and Jason Whitens will all walk on senior day, although all three could still return for one more season. Joey Hauser would normally walk in this ceremony, but he walked last year and will abstain.

Tom Izzo: Michigan State basketball’s Malik Hall already out of walking boot

Tom Izzo: Malik Hall already out of walking boot, still expected to miss some time

In its loss to Purdue on Monday, Michigan State basketball endured another big loss: Malik Hall seemed to aggravate the foot injury that has affected him all season.

Immediately following the game, Tom Izzo didn’t seem optimistic about getting Hall back this year, which would have been a devastating blow to a thin MSU roster. However, Spartan fans received some amazing news on Tuesday when Tom Izzo said on the MSUFCU Coaches Show that Hall is already out of his walking boot, although he is still expected to miss some time.

Malik Hall is out, it is time for Pierre Brooks to step up for Michigan State basketball

With Malik Hall, the Spartans need Pierre Brooks to step up and answer the challenge:

Michigan State basketball took a blow on Monday when the news that Malik Hall may miss significant time due to a foot/ankle injury he suffered against Illinois on Friday night. With Hall set to miss time, it is now time for Pierre Brooks to step up.

Brooks is in his sophomore year on campus, after coming in as a 4-star, top 65 recruit in the 2021 recruiting class. Brooks hasn’t found a solid spot in the rotation, and has only played 4 minutes in Michigan State’s games against Wisconsin and Illinois.

Brooks’ defensive ability has kept him on the bench, and he is going to need to step up on that end of the floor, to help mitigate Hall’s loss.

Michigan State is 12-5, and 4-2 in the Big Ten, and while the loss of Hall is impactful, Brooks has the ability to not let it be catastrophic by answering this challenge.
