Texas A&M junior defensive lineman will transfer to Mississippi State

Former Texas A&M defensive lineman Malick Sylla will transfer to Mississippi State

Texas A&M’s defensive line suffered after several reserve players entered the transfer portal, including long-armed Edge Malick Sylla, who failed to find consistent playing time despite his random spurts of pass rush success.

Credit to Sylla. He endured a coaching change while having to adapt to Coach Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman’s scheme while playing behind one of the deeper defensive lines in the country.

Even though, at least on paper, Sylla would have seen more playing time after the departures of defensive linemen Nic Scourton, Shemar Stewart, and Shemar Turner next season, he would have likely still been a rotational player and is looking to start with just one year of eligibility remaining.

On Sunday, Sylla announced that he would stay in the SEC and transfer to Mississippi State for his final season, but a starting job with the Bulldogs is not guaranteed.

Sylla’s 6-6 frame and notable strength and versatility showed up in spurts when he was given the opportunity. Still, after playing under two different regimes, the junior is looking to make a final impact with a different team that will eventually get him noticed by NFL scouts.

Texas A&M junior defensive lineman will enter the transfer portal

Texas A&M junior DL Malick Sylla will look to finish his collegiate career elsewhere

Texas A&M’s 2024 season ended at a disappointing 8-4 and 5-3 in SEC play after losing three out of their last four games, including the season finale 17-7 loss to rival Texas in the revival of the Lone Star Showdown.

On Wednesday, the Aggies signed 24 players in the 2025 recruiting class, including flipping two former Missouri commits, five-star offensive tackle Lamont Rogers, and four-star running back Jamorian Morrow, while five-star wide receiver Jerome Myles surprisingly signed, squashing previous reports.

However, eight players have entered the transfer portal, including three reserve defensive linemen, including junior pass rusher Malick Sylla. After three seasons as a rotation-based player, Sylla will look to play his final collegiate season elsewhere.

Sylla’s 6-6 frame and notable strength and versatility showed up in spurts when he was given the opportunity. Still, after playing under two different regimes, the junior is looking to make a final impact with a different team that will eventually get him noticed by NFL scouts.

While some Aggie fans believe that Sylla was expected to see the field next season, Elko and his staff are expected to add several veteran defensive linemen from the portal, and nothing is guaranteed.

Malick Sylla has one year of eligibility remaining. He finished his Texas A&M career with 26 tackles and four sacks.

Texas A&M EDGE Malick Sylla is set to return for the 2024 season

Texas A&M defensive line is set for 2024, as incoming junior EDGE Malick Sylla will return to the program for the 2024 season.

Following the big news that the incoming senior defensive tackle/defensive end Shemar Turner would return for a final season in Aggieland, incoming junior EDGE Malick Sylla followed suit via Texas Aggies United (NIL) on Wednesday night and will officially return to Texas A&M for the 2024 season.

Stating “Back for More” in a post on X, Sylla, who appeared in 12 games during the 2023 season, is coming off one of his better seasons while in a reserve role, recording 14 tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for loss and 2 quarterback hits on the year.

Sylla has yet to break through through two seasons due to the immense depth on the defensive line since the 2022 season. Still, after multiple defensive linemen entered the portal, new Aggies head coach Mike Elko has already added multiple EDGE veterans, including former Purdue Big Ten 2023 sack leader Nic Scoutron and former Bowling Green pass rusher Cashius Howell.

While Sylla will have to work his way up the depth chart, starting this spring, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him consistently impress the coaching staff and be further utilized in pass rush packages in new defensive coordinator Jay Bateman’s system.

Longhorns offer 2022 Weak Side Defensive End

UT has offered another player from Texas in the 2022 class. Malick Sylla is a weak side defensive end with offers from 13 other programs.

Tom Herman’s 2020 recruiting class was consistent with one thing and that was acquiring in-state talent. Of the 19 players that signed their letter on intent, 18 of them were from the state of Texas, with five-star running back Bijan Robinson being the one standout.

The Longhorns are trying to continue that trend in the 2021 and 2022 classes and have offered another player from Texas. Malick Sylla is a 2020 weakside defensive end from Katy High School, considered one of the best programs in the state.

Sylla is currently unranked by 247Sports but has offers from all over the country. Baylor and Oklahoma State from the Big 12 join Texas, while SEC schools Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M have also offered Sylla.

Listed at 6 feet 5 inches and 225 pounds, Sylla has the size to be a great defensive end. Just the second weakside defensive end offered in the 2022 class by the Longhorns, Sylla would be a great addition to Herman’s squad.
