Another former Buckeye has been picked up and signed and will have a chance to make the Steelers roster through the preseason.

Another former Ohio State player will have a shot at making it on an NFL squad through the preseason. Former OSU offensive lineman Malcolm Pridgeon has signed a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers the team announced Monday.

Pridgeon played for the Buckeyes from 2016 to 2018, grabbing the starting spot at left guard during the 2018 campaign. He went undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft but had opportunities as a free agent signing with the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns.

However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Pridgeon was one of the few players who opted out of the 2020 season because of safety concerns. He had been without a team since.

Now, he’ll get a shot to realize his dream of playing in the NFL with a Steelers franchise that already has former Ohio State players Dwayne Haskins, Marcus Baugh and Cameron Heyward on the roster.

Pridgeon will have his work cut out for him to stick on the 53-man squad, but he at least has a chance to make an impression.

Former Ohio State football player set to participate in The Spring League

Malcolm Pridgeon is the only former Ohio State football player competing in The Spring League this season.

The Spring League is finally kicking off their spring season and it is their biggest yet with eight teams in two different locations. The Spring League views itself as a developmental league and started its humble beginnings as a camp in West Virginia. At the time, it only had two rosters with the games being streamed on Facebook. Now The Spring League is a full-fledged successful alternative football league and the games can be watched on FOX.

During the fall season, the most notable former Ohio State payer to play in the league was J.T. Barret. He had a very solid season and even faced former Michigan Wolverine quarterback Shea Patterson who had a very impressive Spring League season himself (surprise!).

This season, the only former Buckeye is offensive lineman Malcolm Pridgeon who is set to suit up for the Aviators of the North Division. The Ohio State alum should dominate in this league considering that he has technically been with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL the last two seasons. I say technically because Pridgeon did elect to opt out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns.

Pridgeon started at guard for the Buckeyes during the 2018 season and had a fairly unspectacular season, but was able to sign with the Houston Texans as a free agent after going undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft. He was released but did land with the Cleveland Browns.

Browns waive OL Malcolm Pridgeon from opt-out list

Pridgeon was on the team’s practice squad in 2019

The Cleveland Browns have waived offensive lineman Malcolm Pridgeon from the reserve list. The move was official on Tuesday.

Pridgeon was on the opt-out list for the 2020 NFL season due to COVID-19 concerns. He intially joined the Browns for the 2019 season as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State. He spent his rookie season of Cleveland’s practice squad.

The 6-6, 335-pound guard is subject to waiver claims from other teams.

Malcolm Pridgeon becomes the 5th Browns player to opt out for 2020

Pridgeon is the third OG to opt out, joining Drew Forbes and Colby Gossett

The depth chart at offensive guard is looking pretty barren for the Cleveland Browns after the NFL’s opt-out deadline. Young reserve Malcolm Pridgeon became the third guard to exercise his right to opt out from playing in 2020 due to the risk from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pridgeon joins fellow guards Colby Gossett and Drew Forbes on the opt-out list, along with undrafted rookie tackle Drake Dorbeck and defensive tackle Andrew Billings. The deadline passed at 4 p.m. on Thursday with those five Browns the only players taking the option.

Pridgeon is a second-year player out of Ohio State. He spent his rookie season on the Browns practice squad after originally signing as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans.

The Browns depth chart at guard is now Joel Bitonio starting on the left and Wyatt Teller on the right, backed up by Willie Wright and rookie Nick Harris, who is also the backup center. Former starting right tackle Chris Hubbard can also play guard in a pinch, and right now that pinch is a distinct possibility.
