A look at the ‘Madden NFL 21’ ratings for every Bucs player

Check out where each Buccaneers player stands in the first round of ratings for ‘Madden NFL 21.’

With Madden NFL 21 set to be released next month, EA Sports released the first set of player rankings throughout the week to get us excited about the new game.

Right off the bat, the Bucs have four guys in the 90 club, led by Rob Gronkowski, who landed an overall rating of 95, third best among tight ends. Wide receiver Mike Evans, who was disappointed by his 91 rating last year prior to the release of Madden NFL 20, moved up a point to 92, but may even be upset about that.

Linebacker Lavonte David and quarterback Tom Brady both landed a rating of 90, while Chris Godwin narrowly missed out on joining the 90 club with an 88 overall rating.

Panthers LB Andre Smith says Gronk’s Madden 21 rating is ‘disrespectful’

Panthers linebacker Andre Smith says Rob Gronkowski’s Madden 21 rating is ‘disrespectful.’

It’s that time of year again when NFL players are upset about their ratings in the latest edition of Madden. Last night, EA Sports dropped the official ratings for every player in the game.

As usual, there were some very interesting choices by the game developers. Michael Thomas being rated higher than Julio Jones and a part of the prestigious “99 Club” along with Christian McCaffrey, Aaron Donald, Patrick Mahomes and Stephon Gilmore is certainly one of them.

Some Panthers linebackers have issues with the ratings. Jermaine Carter Jr. thinks his athletic testing should have gotten him a better agility score.

Carter earned a 69 overall rating.

His teammate Andre Smith had a different problem. He thinks Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski’s 95 overall rating is too high considering he wasn’t even in the league last year.

Smith says he has no problem with his 62 overall rating, but Gronk’s is disrespectful to other tight ends who should be ahead of him.

A fair point. The guys who have the most cause to complain are Zach Ertz (90 overall) and Austin Hooper (89). At best, Gronk should probably be no higher than 87 at this point in his career.

Broncos’ Justin Simmons is the 6th-best safety in ‘Madden 21’

Broncos defensive back Justin Simmons is the sixth-best safety in ‘Madden NFL 21.’

Denver Broncos defensive back Justin Simmons is the sixth-best safety in Madden NFL 21, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Simmons is rated 90 overall, making him the Broncos’ second-best player in the video game. Denver outside linebacker Von Miller (97 overall) is the Broncos’ highest-rated player in this year’s game.

Denver safety Kareem Jackson (87 overall) didn’t crack the top-10 at his position but he’s not far behind. Earl Thomas (88 overall) is the 10th-best safety in the game, according to EA Sports.

Madden ratings don’t mean much but Simmons will probably be pleased to know that he’s rated higher than Eddie Jackson (89 overall). Jackson is the highest-paid safety in the NFL and Simmons likely wants a similar contract from the Broncos.

Denver made Simmons an offer to make him the fifth- or sixth-highest paid safety in the NFL earlier this offseason. Simmons turned down that offer because a deal closer to his market value would make him the second-highest paid safety in the league. After playing on his franchise tag this year, Simmons will be scheduled to become a free agent in 2021.

Richard Sherman still dominant in video games entering 10th season

Richard Sherman was No. 3 in the Madden 21 ratings, and the best at play recognition.

Don’t let Richard Sherman’s age and the typical timeline for cornerback dominance fool you. The 10-year NFL veteran is still one of the NFL’s best players at his position. He was rewarded for his stellar 2020 campaign with a Pro Bowl trip and Second-Team All-Pro nod. Now he’s receiving accolades from a popular football video game.

EA Sports has begun releasing its rankings for ‘Madden NFL 21,’ and Sherman is one of the game’s best corners. He checked in with the third-highest rating behind reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, and Rams star Jalen Ramsey.

EA Sports was also cognizant of what makes Sherman such a great player. While his athleticism has started to decline, his always-stellar football IQ has risen to the surface as his best attribute. The game has Sherman with the best possible rating, 99, in play recognition.

This is something Sherman has always excelled at. The former receiver has had a knack for running routes with the opposing pass catcher, often beating them to the spot they intended to go. And it’s rare he gets beat on the same thing twice.

Some teams found success going over the top on Sherman, but even then it was rare. He was targeted only 61 times last year including the postseason, allowing a 55.7 percent completion rate and just one touchdown. Sherman hauled in five interceptions, broke up six passes and allowed a paltry 45.3 passer rating when targeted according to Pro Football Focus. That’s never easy to do, but it’s even more difficult after turning 30 with a pair of Achilles surgeries.

It speaks to the type of player Sherman is that at a point in his career where most cornerbacks begin to fade, he’s still producing at a high level for the NFL’s best pass defense. Aging gracefully is hard at the cornerback position, but Sherman’s experience and high football IQ allow him to continue playing like one of the NFL’s best.

If tape and numbers aren’t enough, now you can ask ‘Madden.’

Donte Jackson gets highest speed rating among CBs in ‘Madden 21’

According to ESPN, Jackson has been given the highest speed rating (96) among cornerbacks in the latest edition of the Madden franchise.

Donte Jackson had a tough 2019 season. After struggling in coverage too often, he wound up getting benched the last two games after publicly falling out with Panthers interim coach Perry Fewell. Jackson remains an exceptional athlete with a lot of potential, though. One thing you can’t take away from him is that he’s still one of the fastest players in the entire league.

According to ESPN, Jackson has been given the highest speed rating (96) among cornerbacks in the latest edition of the Madden franchise.

It may seem like centuries ago given the way 2020 has gone, but at the combine Jackson ran a 4.32 second 40-yard dash. He also finished in second place in the 40-yard dash tournament last year.

If defensive coordinator Phil Snow and cornerbacks coach Evan Cooper can get Jackson to play with a little more discipline, he could still go on to have a very successful NFL career.

Check out Rams rookie Brycen Hopkins’ ratings in ‘Madden NFL 21’

Brycen Hopkins is a 65 overall in “Madden NFL 21”

The Rams have plenty of talent at tight end, so much so that rookie Brycen Hopkins probably won’t contribute much in his first season as a pro. He’s currently slotted behind Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett, as well as blocking specialist Johnny Mundt.

As a fourth-round pick, no one expected him to be much of a threat in “Madden NFL 21” and on Thursday, his ratings were released. He’s only a 65 overall, which is eighth among all rookie tight ends, but he does have good speed.

His speed rating is 84 – second-best for a rookie tight end – and he gets going in a hurry with 89 acceleration. Where Hopkins gets dinged is his catch rating, which is only 75. That’s because he dropped eight passes in 2019.

His 77 catch in traffic rating is sixth-best, while his short route-running (65) is fifth-best at his position for a rookie.

Hopkins is a somewhat raw prospect, but he’s extremely athletic and should have an impact at some point in his second season – especially if the Rams move on from Everett in 2021.

His upside was too much for the Rams to pass up in Round 4, as he’s a long-term guy on this roster, not an immediate-impact one.

Broncos OLB Von Miller is 3rd-best pass rusher in ‘Madden 21’

Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller is the third-best pass rusher in ‘Madden NFL 21.’

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller is tied with Chicago Bears edge defender Khalil Mack as the third-best pass rusher in Madden NFL 21. Miller and Mack both have 97 overall ratings in the video game.

The only pass rushers with better overall ratings than Miller and Mack are Houston Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt (98 overall) and Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald (99 overall).

Miller has the eighth-best power move rating in the game (94), just above Mack (93). Miller’s overall rating hasn’t changed from last year’s game.

Miller is the Broncos’ highest-rated player in the game, above safeties Justin Simmons (90 overall) and Kareem Jackson (87 overall). Complete ratings for Madden NFL 21 will be announced later this week.

Madden 21 will be released for Xbox and PlayStation consoles on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Since its debut in 1988, the Madden franchise has sold more than 130 million copies of the popular NFL video game.

Broncos have 2 players on list of fastest RBs in ‘Madden 21’

Broncos speedsters Phillip Lindsay and Khalfani Muhammad are among the fastest running backs in ‘Madden NFL 21.’

The Denver Broncos have two players on EA Sports’ list of the 10 fastest running backs in Madden NFL 21.

Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay has a speed rating of 93, putting him in a seven-way tie as the third-fastest running back in the video game. Khalfani Muhammad is also tied for third with a 93 speed rating.

The fastest running backs in the game are Raheem Mostert and Matt Breida, who both have speed ratings of 95. Complete ratings for the game will be announced later this week.

Muhammad competed against 15 other NFL players at a 40-yard dash competition last summer. Muhammad made it to the final of the offensive bracket of the competition but lost to eventual champion Marquise Goodwin. That competition likely put Muhammad on Madden‘s radar.

Three years ago, Muhammad ran a 4.34-second 40-yard dash at California’s pro day. That’s faster than Lindsay, who was clocked running a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at Colorado’s pro day two years ago.

Aaron Donald has a 99 overall rating in ‘Madden’ for 4th straight year

Aaron Donald is once again in the 99 Club.

In addition to being one of the best players in the NFL, Aaron Donald is also one of the top-rated players in the virtual football world. For the fourth year in a row, Donald is in the coveted 99 Club in “Madden,” earning a 99 overall rating in EA Sports’ latest edition of the video game franchise.

Donald is the third player to be revealed as part of the 99 club in “Madden NFL 21,” joining Christian McCaffrey and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. Donald learned of the news when he was presented with a care package from EA, which included a gold chain and a plaque.

Donald was absolutely dominant in last year’s game, especially with the newly introduced X-factor traits that rewarded star players with special abilities. He’s as disruptive in the game as he is in real life, if not more so when utilized properly.

EA has been revealing “Madden” ratings over the last week or so and will continue to do so in the coming days. Cam Akers and Van Jefferson also had their ratings released, with Akers being a 73 overall and Jefferson a 70 overall.
