Adam Ranks calls Gronk’s Madden rating ‘egregiously off-base’

See why NFL.com’s Adam Rank believes the Madden people got it wrong with Rob Gronkowski’s player rating in ‘Madden NFL 21.’

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ acquisition of tight end Rob Gronkowski this offseason reunites Tom Brady with his favorite target of all time.

Brady, the six-time Super Bowl champion who signed with the Bucs this offseason after 20 years with the Patriots, struggled mightily without Gronk last year. The return of one of the game’s greatest tight ends should have Brady’s numbers on the up-and-up in 2020.

But Gronk’s return to the NFL isn’t without its share of controversy — Madden controversy that is.

Last week, the player ratings for Madden NFL 21 were released ahead of the game’s release next month, and Gronk’s player rating of 95 raised more than a few eyebrows. Even his own teammates couldn’t believe it! Adam Rank over at NFL.com had Gronk at No. 2 on his list of the ten most egregiously off-base player ratings in Madden NFL 21.

Per Rank:

“Like I said, this list includes the good. And the bad. I’m a huge fan of Gronk, who is probably the greatest tight end in NFL history. (If you want to say Tony Gonzalez actually holds that title, that’s fine. But it’s also not the point.) The thing is, Gronk, who came out of retirement to join Tom Brady on the Bucs, did not play NFL football last year. And yet, he has a higher Madden rating than reigning MVP Lamar Jackson (94). I might have R-Truth, the man who beat Gronk for the WWE 24/7 title, rated higher than Gronk at this point. And this is downright disrespectful to Eagles tight end Zach Ertz, who is rated a 90.”

As much as I love Gronk, there is no way he deserves to be a 95, at least not right now. Even a 90 rating would’ve been a stretch. 88 feels like the right number for a guy who’s been away from the game for a year.

A look at the ‘Madden NFL 21’ ratings for every Bucs player

Check out where each Buccaneers player stands in the first round of ratings for ‘Madden NFL 21.’

With Madden NFL 21 set to be released next month, EA Sports released the first set of player rankings throughout the week to get us excited about the new game.

Right off the bat, the Bucs have four guys in the 90 club, led by Rob Gronkowski, who landed an overall rating of 95, third best among tight ends. Wide receiver Mike Evans, who was disappointed by his 91 rating last year prior to the release of Madden NFL 20, moved up a point to 92, but may even be upset about that.

Linebacker Lavonte David and quarterback Tom Brady both landed a rating of 90, while Chris Godwin narrowly missed out on joining the 90 club with an 88 overall rating.

Twitter reacts to Gronk’s latest Madden rating

See how fans on Twitter reacted to Bucs TE Rob Gronkowski’s latest rating in “Madden NFL 21.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will certainly have the look and feel of a team straight out of Madden NFL 21 when the 2020 rolls around.

Not only will the team be sporting a new look that evokes memories of their championship days, but they’ll be led by the greatest quarterback to ever play the game in Tom Brady. The six-time Super Bowl champion shocked the world this offseason when he opted to leave the New England Patriots and head to the Sunshine State to lead the NFL’s third-best offense.

Making Brady’s transition to a new offense a little easier will be the fact that he’ll have tight end Rob Gronkowski right by his side. The former Patriot ended his one-year retirement this offseason after the Bucs traded for him.

Gronk has been busy getting himself back in game shape, and already looks great in a Bucs uniform. Still, he hasn’t played in over a year and will be joining a new offense just like Brady. That might be why some fans on Twitter were a bit surprised to see Gronk’s 95 rating in Madden.

Here are some of the reactions:

Rob Gronkowski’s latest Madden rating may surprise you

Bucs tight end Rob Gronkowski is making his triumphant return to the field in 2020. See what rating the people over at Madden gave him.

Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans may have a gripe with the ratings people over at Madden NFL 21, given that they have Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams rated higher than him.

But one Buccaneer player who is probably more than happy with his latest rating is Rob Gronkowski, the former New England Patriot who ended his one-year retirement this offseason to reunite with Tom Brady in Tampa after the Bucs swung a trade with the Pats for the All-Pro tight end.

During his playing days, Gronk was easily the best at his position, and he still holds the single-season record for touchdown catches by a tight end with 17. And despite being away from football for a whole year, the Madden people still think Gronk can dominate with Brady by his side.

For the record, Gronk’s rating is higher than Evans, who stands at 92 overall.

While Gronk has certainly played up to that 95 rating in the past, this will be an entirely new offensive system for him. Plus, this offseason has been a difficult one for players joining new teams given the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. I’d have been all right with Gronk being fourth on this list and Ertz third, at least to start.

The pressure is on for Gronkowski to live up to that 95.
