Hill will attempt to break into the rankings on the heels of back-to-back wins over Loopy Godinez and Emily Ducote. The 38-year-old will make her 23rd octagon appearance with the bout, which will tie her with Jessica Andrade for most fights by any female in UFC history.

The latest lineup for UFC’s May 13 event includes:

  • Anthony Smith vs. Johnny Walker
  • Jailton Almeida vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik
  • Mackenzie Dern vs. Angela Hill

Video: Can Mackenzie Dern still meet early expectations to become a UFC champion?

Our “Spinning Back Clique” discusses Mackenzie Dern’s UFC title hopes.

[autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] entered the UFC as a highly-touted prospect due to her elite BJJ skills, and along with her arrival in 2018 came a lofty projection.

Dern’s fifth professional MMA fight was her UFC debut. That alone speaks to the expectations of her career trajectory. She received early comparisons to UFC Hall of Famer [autotag]Ronda Rousey[/autotag] largely due to their grappling backgrounds, but being mentioned along with the former bantamweight champion suggests that a UFC title would also be in Dern’s near future.

At UFC Fight Night 211, Dern came up short in a majority decision after a 25-minute clash of styles with Xiaonan Yan, notching her third loss in 10 bouts with the promotion, and her second to a top-ranked contender in her last three fights.

While Dern has worked her way up to be able to share the cage with some of the best in the division, do you still belive she can one day claim UFC gold?

Our panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Mike Bohn, and Danny Segura discuss Dern’s title hopes with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia in the video above.

Spinning Back Clique: Mackenzie Dern’s UFC title hopes, Bo Nickal’s first UFC test, more

MMA Junkie’s weekly “Spinning Back Clique” examines what’s next for Mackenzie Dern, Bo Nickal’s first UFC booking, and more.

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

Our panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Mike Bohn, and Danny Segura discuss five topics with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia.

  • Former Penn State wrestling standout and blue-chip MMA prospect [autotag]Bo Nickal[/autotag] officially signed with the UFC last week after going 2-0 on this season of Dana White’s Contender Series, and he didn’t waste any time in booking his first promotional fight. Nickal is set to debut against Jamie Pickett on Dec. 10 at UFC 282. Is this the type of matchup you wanted for Nickal after he called our Khamzat Chimaev, or should the UFC have pushed him higher?
  • When [autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] entered the UFC in 2018, there were high expectations given her decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu pedigree (she’d even received early Ronda Rousey comparisons). While she’s worked her way into the strawweight top five, her loss to Yan Xiaonan this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 211 was her second to a top contender in her past three fights. Four years into her UFC tenure, do you still believe Dern will meet expectations and win a UFC title?
  • [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag], who won a barnburner of a fight against Spike Carlyle this past Saturday at Bellator 286, told MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn in the lead-up to the fight that he would gladly welcome [autotag]Nate Diaz[/autotag] to Bellator with a Long Beach slap. Diaz, of course, is a soon-to-be free agent who will garner plenty of interest from around the combat sports world. Does Diaz signing with Bellator, along with a fight against McKee, interest you?
  • News broke last week that former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion [autotag]Eddie Alvarez[/autotag] amicably has parted ways with ONE Championship after just four fights. He said he has meetings with almost every big player in MMA lined up. What’s the best option for the 38-year-old?
  • PFL announced the date and location for its championship event, which will take place Nov. 25 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. This is the conclusion of their 2022 season, where six new champions will be crowned. For the first time in the promotion’s three-season history, this card is on pay-per-view, although details have not been released. Is this the right call? If so, put a price tag on it.

5 biggest takeaways from UFC Fight Night 211/Bellator 286: Which company won the night?

UFC and Bellator both ran shows on Saturday, but which organization had the better night?

What mattered most at UFC Fight Night 211 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and Bellator 286 at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif.? Here are a few post-fight musings …

Mackenzie Dern disappointed with her jiu-jitsu in UFC Fight Night 211 loss: ‘I should be finishing’

Mackenzie Dern is not happy with her performance in her UFC Fight Night 211 loss to Yan Xiaonan.

[autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag]’s return to the cage didn’t go as planned.

The UFC women’s strawweight contender suffered a loss in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 211 in Las Vegas when she came up short in a majority decision against China’s Yan Xiaonan.

But it wasn’t just the loss to Yan (15-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) that hurt Dern (12-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC), it was also the fact that the jiu-jitsu champion was able to get Yan to the ground multiple times and not get the finish.

“I didn’t do what I came to do,” Dern said on the ESPN+ post-fight show. “My goal was if I got it to the ground, I should be finishing it. I have the best jiu-jitsu, I believe, in the women’s division. I had lots of opportunities to finish, and she was just a better fighter than me. I just couldn’t (finish her).”

[lawrence-related id=2586080,2585984]

With this result, Dern now is 1-2 in her past three bouts. She said she thinks she’s evolved, but wasn’t able to show it in the cage. Either way, the journey continues and Dern will look to learn from this defeat.

“I feel like I’ve been getting so (much) better, and it sucks not being able to show it in the fight,” Dersn explained. “I have so much to grow, and it’s all part of the journey. I just thank Dana (White), the UFC, my team, the (Mark) Zuckerberg family for being there and making this such a great event.

“I mean, I’m sorry if I made anyone sad with my performance. So many people believed in me, and I believed in myself, but it’s part of the game.”

UFC Fight Night 211 results: Yan Xiaonan takes majority decision over Mackenzie Dern in main event

Yan Xiaonan shined on the feet and escaped Mackenzie Dern’s submission attempts on the mat in the main event of UFC Fight Night 211.

The classic clash of styles between a striker and grappler told the story of the UFC Fight Night 211 main event.

[autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag] was able to show her striking skills while stifling the aggressive grappling and submission threat of Mackenzie Dern, leading to a majority decision after 25 minutes of action.

When the dust settled, Yan (15-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) did enough to convince two of the three judges she was the winner of the bout with two scores of 48-47, while a third judge thought Dern (12-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) rallied hard enough in the final frame to make the fight a draw.

The women’s strawweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 211 main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Punches and kicks were traded frequently at the beginning of the first round. Dern offered punches upstairs while Yan mixed up her attack with kicks to the legs. Midway through the round, Dern got in on a single leg against the fence, but Yan displayed solid takedown defense to keep the fight standing. While the second Dern takedown attempt was also stopped, the third saw the fighters go to the ground. However, Yan reversed and ended up on top, and landed a few punches before the round ended.

After a few striking exchanges to start the second, Dern sold out for Yan’s legs, and scooted across the mat until she was able to bring her down to attack submissions. A slick transition from the BJJ ace saw Dern lock in an omoplata, which transitioned to an arm triangle. Yan was able to escape both attempts, but Dern ended up in full mount, where she began raining down punches.

Yan landed solid strikes to begin the third, but her momentum was halted when Dern locked up an arm and pulled her down into guard. They returned to their feet a seconds later, and continued trading hard strikes. A hard left hand wobbled Dern, but Yan was unable to capitalize on the moment. Yan continued to land sharply from distance, but Dern was able to complete a takedown in the closing seconds of the round.

[lawrence-related id=2585418,2586080]

A Dern single-leg attempt was turned away by Yan early in the fourth. Working behind a sharp left jab, Yan kept Dern at distance, and unloaded combinations when she tried to close the range. The kicks from Yan resurfaced as well. Dern was able to pull guard from a takedown attempt, and although she was able to get an armbar attempt in, there was not enough time on the clock.

Dern came out aggressive and got Yan to the mat just 30 seconds into the round. Armbar threats mixed with punches from full mount put Yan in a world of trouble with a lot of time on the clock. Yan gave up her back, but Dern continued to hunt for submissions while landing punches. Dern went for an armbar, but Yan escaped and the fighters traded punches on the ground until the horn.

Two of the judges saw the fight in Yan’s favor, while another saw the bout as a draw.

Yan gets back in the win column, putting an end to a two-fight skid. The No. 9 ranked strawweight in the USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie strawweight rankings entered on the heels of a pair of setbacks against Carla Esparza and Marina Rodriguez. Prior to her skid, however, Yan won her first six appearances under the UFC banner.

Dern entered on the heels of a split decision win over Tecia Torres at UFC 273 in April. Trading wins and losses over her last four outings, a loss to Marina Rodriguez stopped Dern’s four-fight win streak that included three first-round submission wins.

UFC Fight Night 211: Mackenzie Dern vs. Yan Xiaonan odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 211 odds and lines between Mackenzie Dern vs. Yan Xiaonan, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a women’s strawweight bout in the main event, Mackenzie Dern and Yan Xiaonan meet Saturday at UFC Fight Night 211 at UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the UFC Fight Night 211: Dern vs. Yan odds, with expert picks and predictions.

The fight can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims beginning at 4 p.m. ET and the main card at 7 p.m. ET.

In terms of stature, this is a very even fight. Both fighters are 115 pounds, with Yan standing just 1 inch taller. The two fighters have an identical 63-inch reach.

Yan checks in on a 2-bout losing skid, falling to Marina Rodriguez via split decision last time out at UFC 272 in March and to Carla Esparza by way of 2nd-round KO/TKO in May 2021. Since arriving at the UFC level, Yan has gone the distance in 7 of her 8 fights.

The Team RVCA fighter Dern posted a split-decision over Tecia Torres last time out at UFC 273 in April, washing the sour taste out of her mouth from a unanimous-decision loss to Marina Rodriguez in her previous fight in Oct. 2021. While just 3 of her past 6 fights have required the help of the judges, she has had 3 decisions in her last 4 outings.

UFC Fight Night 211 Dern vs. Xiaonan picks and predictions

Records: Dern (12-2-0) | Yan (15-3-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Dern (-250) is a little on the expensive side, costing you 2 1/2 times your potential return. While I believe the Brazilian fighter is able to get it done, that’s too much risk for not enough reward. Let’s get more specific.

Yan tends to take these fights deep into the night, requiring the judges to make a decision in 7 of the past 8. DERN BY POINTS (+410) is worth a roll of the dice, although the books expect this to be finished sooner than that.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 ROUNDS (-145) is a very good play. Yan has been involved in just 1 fight in the past 8 to finish inside the distance.

As a result, YES (+150): FIGHT TO GO THE DISTANCE at plus-money is an absolute steal as well.
