LSU makes 4-star tight end’s final 11

The Tigers could add their second blue-chip tight end in the 2023 class on July 20 when Martavious Collins announces his commitment.

[autotag]Martavious Collins[/autotag] is a 6-foot-3, 241-pound tight end from Rome, Georgia, who recently announced his final 11 schools. LSU made that list, and he has set a commitment date of July 20.

The Tigers join Alabama, NC State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisville, Cincinnati, Auburn, and Michigan State on the list of finalists. According to On3, NC State is currently the favorite at 30.2%, and there is no Crystal Ball prediction on 247Sports for Collins.

He is ranked as the No. 36 player in the country for the 2023 class by 247Sports, so he would be an incredible pickup for whatever team he decides to play for. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and LSU could definitely use him next season and for years to come as the Tigers are thin at tight end.

[autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag] is currently committed as a four-star tight end for the 2023 class. He and Collins would be a dynamic duo for LSU.

Looking at LSU’s commits so far in 2023 class

A running tracker of every commit the Tigers have landed this cycle.

In the words of Alice Cooper, school’s out for summer. But when it comes to recruiting, there is no off-season.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is known for always having great recruiting classes every year. His first recruiting class at LSU was ranked as the No. 7 class in the country last year, and he’s already off to a hot start for the 2023 class.

So far, the Tigers have seven commits for this class, and that list is growing by the day. So, let’s take a look at all of the athletes that have committed to playing for LSU in 2023.

Disclaimer: Even though these kids are currently committed to LSU until they put pen to paper and sign their name on the dotted line, they can change their minds and play elsewhere. This list will be updated as more players commit.

Recapping LSU’s recent recruiting wins under Brian Kelly

The recruiting trail has been heating up for Brian Kelly and LSU. Here are all the names they have landed over the last few weeks.

After signing day in February, recruiting was slow for LSU. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and his staff were still settling in as the calendar turned to the 2023 signing class.

Recently, things on the trail have heated up again. It’s usually what happens this time of year as coaches try to get as much work done on those next classes before they have to deal with the daily grind of the season in the fall.

LSU has picked up a few commits over the last couple of weeks and has even more visits lined up.

It’s a promising sign for Kelly’s program. Despite the current situation and how the last two seasons have played out, recruits are interested in coming to LSU. There’s real momentum right now and if the coaching staff can keep it up, the 2023 class will be in a great position.

It’s not just the fact that Kelly is picking up commits, but they’re coming at positions of need from states like Georgia and Texas, two places that you need to be able to pluck some players from to compete at the top of the SEC.

Here’s a rundown of each of the new additions to the class.

Four-star tight end commits to LSU

The Tigers landed a pledge from Saint Louis, Missouri, tight end Mac Markway on Thursday.

Mac Markway, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound four-star tight end from Saint Louis, Missouri, announced his commitment to play for the LSU Tigers on Thursday. Markway is the first commitment of the Brian Kelly era at LSU and just the second player to join the Tigers’ 2023 class.

There are a lot of ties on this staff that connects LSU to Markway. Cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples actually coached Markway at De Smet Jesuit High School before he joined the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff.  Special Teams/Recruiting Coordinator Brian Polian recruited Markway while he was working at Notre Dame, and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock had recruited Markway in the past as well.

Markway and his family were in Baton Rouge for an unofficial visit earlier this month. Denbrock and Kelly both impressed his family on the visit with their plan for him and the program.

“He (Denbrock) is a great guy! We talked about what their goal is and how they are going to achieve it. I’m really excited to see,” Markway told On3. “He (Kelly) was also first class. We talked about everything that he wants to do with the program and how they will use me. The tight end will definitely be the heart and soul of that team.”

Markway was a former commit to play for the Florida Gators before they made their coaching change to Billy Napier. According to On3, Markway is the No. 9 tight end in the country, the No. 4 tight end in Missouri and the No. 117 player overall for the class of 2023.

LSU receives crystal ball for talented top-100 tight end

The Tigers could be poised to land Mac Markway, a tight end from Saint Louis, Missouri.

The Tigers are looking to add offensive weapons in the 2023 recruiting class, and they could be poised to land one of the best this cycle.

On Tuesday, 247Sports director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong placed a crystal ball to LSU for four-star Saint Louis (Missouri) DeSmet tight end Mac Markway.

Markway, a 6-foot-4-inch, 250-pound prospect, ranks as the No. 100 overall player in the 2023 class per the 247Sports Composite. He’s listed as the No. 7 tight end and No. 3 player from the state of Missouri. He also has interest in Iowa, Miami and Ohio State, but six of the seven crystal ball predictions for Markway have him heading to Baton Rouge.

He was previously committed to former coach Dan Mullen at Florida, initially pledging last July before decommitting on Dec. 19 shortly after new coach Billy Napier was hired.

Here’s his scouting breakdown from 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks.

Size is not verified but looks and plays big/stout. Physical at the point of attack and thrives in the run game as a blocker. Tone setter in that capacity. Owns extensive two-way snaps and could likely play either side of the ball at the Power Five level. Flashes impressive suddenness and punch in close quarters. Also plays basketball. Played abbreviated four-game sophomore season, so sample size is limited. Appears to have above average hands and dexterity. Knows how to find open space. Adequate functional athlete as a pass catcher but needs to improve big-play ability and overall production. Need a larger sample size that hopefully junior season should provide. Projects to the high-major level as a high-floor tight end with scheme versatility.

Landing one of the top out-of-state prospects in the country would certainly be a win for coach Brian Kelly, especially with programs like the Hurricanes and the Buckeyes chasing the Tigers to land Markway’s services.

Notre Dame Football offers 2023 Missouri star athlete

The Missouri star could play a variety of positions

The Irish have loaded up heavily on the defensive side of the ball so far in their 2023 recruiting class, but that doesn’t mean they won’t try to continue to add on more potential stellar defenders. Today another one was offered, Christian Brothers College High School’s star athlete Jeremiyah Love.

The multi-positional player could end up at a variety of spots, either running back, safety, wide receiver, or cornerback. At six-foot-one-inch and 195-pounds, Love has the frame to play all of those positions and could even grow into another one, linebacker. Athletes like Love don’t come by often so the Irish getting a scholarship offer out to him makes plenty of sense.

Already Love had offers from Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Oregon and others before getting the Irish offer. It looks like Marcus Freeman is making the state of Missouri a focus, as Love makes it now three different players the Irish are going hard after, tight end Mac Markway and cornerback Christian Gray being the others.

Florida football’s top recruit in class of 2023 decommits

While Billy Napier tries to piece together a 2022 recruiting class, Florida’s top pledge for 2023 is backing off.

Four-star tight end Mac Markway committed to Florida in the summer after being recruited by tight ends coach Tim Brewster. He’s backing off that pledge now that Brewster will no longer be on the staff along with other coaching changes across the country.

The 6-foot-4-inch, 250-pound (unverified) recruit took to Twitter to make the announcement. Markway is a top 100 recruit on the 247Sports Composite List and was Florida’s best in the class of 2023. The loss brings the Gators down to just two verbal commitments in the class, but new coach Billy Napier has proven to be meticulous in his approach to recruiting.

Markway visited Florida for the Tennessee game when the team was ranked No. 11 in the country. A lot has changed since then, and it’s not too surprising to see Markway back off his commitment. He’s the fifth-highest rated tight end on the 247 Composite and the No. 96 ranked player in the country.

10 SEC schools have offered Markway and several other Power Five programs have as well. With his recruitment back open it’s anyone’s ball game and the best of the best want him. Interestingly, Georgia doesn’t appear to be in the race for him just yet.

Florida losing one of its two committed 2023 four-stars may seem like a return to the losses the team suffered as Napier began to transition in, but the class still ranks sixth in the SEC.

Notre Dame misses out on elite 2023 TE prospect

On to the next one

You win some, you lose some. That’s recruiting for you and yesterday the Irish lost one when Missouri tight end Mac Markway made his verbal pledge to SEC rising power Florida. If there is one school that has an argument against Notre Dame for Tight End U, its the Gators.

[listicle id=29791]

They recently sent off Kyle Pitts to the NFL with the fourth overall selection to the Atlanta Falcons. The Gators also will welcome in LSU transfer Arik Gilbert, who was seen as the best TE prospect in his recruiting class and now the addition of Markway will just make that room stronger.

Fortunately for the Irish, Markway’s decision was made extremely early for his 2023 class, so Brian Kelly has plenty of time to recalibrate the tight end recruiting board. There are three other tight ends that have been offered in the class so far, Arizona’s Duce Robinson, Virginia’s Mathias Barnwell and Massachusetts Preston Zinter, so expect the Irish to turn up the heat on those prospects.

Notre Dame Presents Offer to Tight End Recruit Mac Markway

Like many other schools looking at tight end recruit Mac Markway, Notre Dame isn’t wasting time.

Like many other schools looking at tight end recruit Mac Markway, Notre Dame isn’t wasting time. Irish tight ends coach John McNulty has made Markway an offer even though he just completed his sophomore season at De Smet Jesuit in St. Louis. If Markway selects Notre Dame, he’ll join fellow De Smet product and current Irish receiver Jordan Johnson, who will be a senior by the time he begins his collegiate career:

Notre Dame obviously felt it had to move fast on Markway because he’s already drawn interest from 24 schools and received offers from 20 of them. These include Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State, Washington, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Iowa, Miami, Texas A&M and Kansas. There’s no telling how much more he can develop as he continues playing at the prep level. It will be exciting to watch him continue to climb the ranks.
