Amari Cooper, Juan Thornhill active vs. Steelers as Browns name 5 inactives

The Browns get big news heading up to gametime

The Cleveland Browns get some great news as they get set to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Just 90 minutes away from this AFC North showdown on Monday Night Football, wide receiver will be active and play in this one after tweaking his groin late in the week. Safety Juan Thornhill will also make his Cleveland debut after missing the first week of the season with a calf injury.

This is a huge boost for a team looking to get off to not only a 2-0 start for the first time in 30 years, but to a 2-0 start in the AFC North as well. With a win, the Browns would sit atop the AFC North, taking the tiebreaker over the Baltimore Ravens (who they will play in Week 4) with more divisional wins.

With just about an hour until kickoff, the Browns have listed five players as inactive. Here is the full list.

Browns: Juan Thornhill, Siaki Ika headline list of inactives vs. Bengals

The Browns have announced their five inactives

Gametime is almost here! And as tradition goes, NFL teams release their inactives 90 minutes before the opening kickoff. And for the Cleveland Browns, this means they have announced five players who will not suit up in this game. This list is headlined by starting safety Juan Thornhill, who entered the matchup questionable after dealing with a calf injury all week. Rookie defensive tackle Siaki Ika is also listed as a healthy scratch.

Thornhill, despite an interception returned for a touchdown against his old team in the preseason finale, will have to wait a week to make his regular season debut with the Browns after testing his calf out pregame.

Ika, however, is a bit of a surprise as a third round pick this past April. However, when playing heavy 11-personnel teams that like to throw the football all over the field, Ika does not give much support against the pass. He too will have to wait at least a week to make his NFL debut.

Here is the full list of inactives as the Browns take on the Bengals.

Podcast: Breaking down the Browns initial 53-man roster and future changes

How does the Browns 53-man roster stack up?

The initial 53-man roster is here for your Cleveland Browns as the regular season draws closer and closer. Though there will be some changes after players are moved to IR and waiver claims are processed most of the roster is locked in.

What was the biggest surprise from this roster, the fact they kept 11 defensive backs or that they moved on from Michael Dunn? Of course, there’s reason to believe that Dunn and hopefully Maurice Hurst will return to the roster.

In this podcast, we discuss all of this and more looking at how we think each room is constructed and why this is the best Browns roster of our lifetime. We also talk about the kicker one more time in hopes that the trade for Dustin Hopkins finally brings some stability there for the team.

You can watch this week’s video by clicking here to hear us go into detail on these topics and more.

Multiple Ohio State rookies make Cleveland Browns roster

Some former Ohio State players got good news on Tuesday. #GoBucks

With NFL preseason play over, Tuesday was the deadline for teams to cut their roster to 53 players. The Cleveland Browns‘ cuts brought pleasant news for many former Buckeyes.

Dawand Jones was a fourth-round pick in 2023 after being a two-year starter for the Buckeyes at right tackle. He received a great deal of praise for his play with the Browns in the preseason. Jones made the 53-man roster and has potential to be a starter for the Browns as early as this season.

The Browns also drafted another two-year starter on the Buckeyes offensive line, Luke Wypler. The rookie center also made the 53-man roster with strong preseason play.

Former Buckeyes safety Ronnie Hickman showed up with a terrific preseason with three interceptions and bucked the odds by making the 53-man roster despite going undrafted in the 2023.

Tanner McCalister who started at nickel safety last season for the Buckeyes after transferring from Oklahoma State received good news as well. He made the Browns’ practice squad.

PFF’s 10 highest-graded Browns on offense vs. the Eagles

Who shined the most on offense against the Eagles

After several brutal practices with the Eagles in Philadelphia, the Cleveland Browns faced them in their third preseason game on Thursday night. The Austin Watkins Jr. story continued as he made even more impressive plays this week.

He understands how to attack a defense and mixes good size and body control with reliable hands making his case for why he should make the roster. Whether he makes it here or somewhere else Watkins Jr. will be on an active roster this year.

Outside of that, the offensive line depth continued to play at a high level with the two Ohio State rookies, Luke Wypler and Dawand Jones, playing well again. How did the top offensive players grade out in Philadelphia according to those at PFF?

4 snap count observations and takeaways from preseason game vs. Eagles

What can we take away from the Browns’ snap counts against the Eagles?

The Cleveland Browns played their first teamers sparingly against the Philadelphia Eagles in Thursday night’s preseason tie. Rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson got the start and once again put on a show. The snap counts have been released, and there are sprinkles of information to be taken from them. Especially in regards to wide receiver David Bell and offensive lineman Luke Wypler.

Shoutout to a former co-worker of mine during my time at The OBR, Anthony Reinhard, who continues to put out outstanding data visuals.

Here are the four biggest takeaways from the Browns’ snap count against the Eagles.

The DTR Show, roster spot battles, and more to watch for as Browns take on Eagles

The Browns, led by rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, will take on the Eagles tonight. What should you be watching for?

After two days of joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Cleveland Browns will now square off with them in their third preseason game of the 2023 season. Dorian Thompson-Robinson will start this game as both Deshaun Watson and Joshua Dobbs will not suit up in Philadelphia.

Thus far we have seen flashes of the first-team offense (who will not play tonight), dominant performances from the 2023 NFL draft class of rookies, and some camp battles heating up as the end of training camp nears.

As the Browns get set for another week of preseason action, what should you be watching in this exhibition matchup against the Eagles?

3 players to watch in Thursday’s preseason game vs. Eagles

Who should you keep an eye on Thursday?

The Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up their joint practices on Tuesday as the teams prepare to face off in the preseason matchup. After seeing a majority of the starters last week against the Commanders they are all set to not play in the game. This gives young players like Austin Watkins the chance to continue to prove themselves.

The fight for the final roster spots in the wide receiver room continues with Marquise Goodwin and Jaelon Darden continuing to be sidelined. Rookies Cedric Tillman and Luke Wypler have had solid starts to their preseason careers.

Let’s take a look at three players you need to keep your eye on Thursday night.

56 days until Browns season opener: 5 players to wear 56 in Cleveland

In 56 days we will all be enjoying the return of Browns football

The long wait is nearly over as the team reports to training camp in a few days in preparation for the 2023 NFL season. There have been a total of 28 different players to wear the number 56 for the Cleveland Browns. The first person to wear it was Dante Lavelli who wore it from 1946 until 1951.

Barring injury or a number change the team will likely add a 29th player to wear it in rookie sixth-round pick Luke Wypler who will wear it heading into training camp. The number has regularly been worn by a linebacker since the return, let’s take a look at five players to dawn the number 56 in Cleveland.

Podcast: What did the Browns get in center Luke Wypler from Ohio State?

What does the film say about the former Buckeye?

The last of the seven draft picks this year for the Cleveland Browns was their second selection of an Ohio State offensive lineman in center Luke Wypler. Several people including myself were surprised that Wypler fell to the sixth round like he did. In the past two seasons, Wypler played in 26 total games for the Buckeyes and only allowed one sack total in that time.

There are some play strength concerns in the running game and he is a center only but as a pass blocker, Wypler is up to the call. He needs to improve his pad level but he understands how to use his hands to create leverage and win reps at his position. You can click here to see more about the offensive linemen with examples from his Ohio State film.
