LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson makes bold statement about RHP Chase Shores

Chase Shores missed all of 2024 but finished the 2023 season with an 0-1 record and a 1.96 ERA.

Last year, LSU baseball finished the season 43-23 and failed to defend their national championship. Their season ended in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with a loss to the Tar Heels in the Chapel Hill Super Regional.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] recently met with the media to discuss the 2025 version of the Bayou Bengals and what he was excited about as he headed into fall ball. There were many topics on the docket for Johnson, but one of the things he talked about was starting pitching.

Who is a pitcher Johnson is high on heading into the next season? That would be redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher [autotag]Chase Shores[/autotag].

https://twitter.com/BHollandSports/status/1844061716633747966

Labeling a player as the best pitcher you have recruited at LSU other than [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] is a head-turning statement. We are talking about a pitcher who was drafted as the No. 1 overall player in the 2023 MLB draft and will likely be the 2024 Rookie of the Year in the MLB.

Giving Shores that kind of praise is interesting, but he has the stuff to be an Ace in the rotation. Shores pitched in seven games in 2023, totaling 18.1 innings and striking out 15 hitters while only walking nine. He finished the year with an 0-1 record and a 1.96 ERA.

I think Shores will make the transition from a bullpen guy to a starter this Spring and I hope he will have a great season in 2025.

Jay Johnson confirms top LSU baseball transfer pitcher addition suffered torn ACL

The Tigers could be without one of their top offseason additions for the 2025 season.

The LSU baseball team is still several months from the beginning of the 2025 season, but when the spring rolls around, it could be without one of its top offseason additions.

Transfer pitcher [autotag]Deven Sheerin[/autotag] has suffered a torn ACL, according to coach Jay Johnson. The injury is not new, as Johnson said it occurred during the summer, but it casts doubt on his availability for the 2025 season. Johnson said there currently is not a timetable for his return.

It’s a major loss for an LSU pitching staff that lost quite a few pieces from last season including starters [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag], [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] and [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] as well as top bullpen arm [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag].

Sheerin, a native of Reading, Pennsylvania, earned MAAC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-MAAC honors as a freshman at Mount St. Mary in 2024. He finished the season with a 4.76 ERA and 6-5 record while striking out 109 batters compared to just 32 walks.

If Sheerin is not able to go by the start of the season, the Tigers will have to lean on other arms in a talented transfer pitcher class that also includes [autotag]Anthony Eyanson[/autotag], [autotag]Jacob Mayers[/autotag], [autotag]Chandler Dorsey[/autotag] and [autotag]Zac Cowan[/autotag].

Paul Skenes ties a Pittsburgh Pirates franchise record

Paul Skenes tied the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise record for strikeouts by a rookie.

In the 19th start of his rookie season, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] tied the [autotag]Pittsburgh Pirates[/autotag] franchise record for strikeouts by a rookie. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Skenes struck out Michael Busch of the Chicago Cubs with a change-up to end the fourth inning.

Skenes finished the game with another win after five innings of work. He allowed four hits and zero runs as he struck out six hitters and walked four. The Pirates ultimately won the game 5-0.

Skenes has pitched a total of 114 innings this season and has a 9-2 record with a 2.13 ERA. He has struck out 142 hitters while only walking 30. He was named an All-Star and was the starter for the National League in the All-Star Game.

Skenes flew through the minor leagues after being the No. 1 overall draft pick out of LSU in the last MLB Draft. Skenes is having a great season so far and hopefully, that will continue moving forward.

Dylan Crews hits his first MLB homer, leads Nationals to series win over the Yankees

Dylan Crews hit his first big-league bomb on Wednesday night as Washington clinched a series win.

After going hitless in the first game of his MLB career, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] has turned up the heat in the past two games. On Tuesday night, he finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Wednesday, he finished the game 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, two RBI and two strikeouts. Those stats helped the Nationals pull off a series win against the New York Yankees.

In his first at-bat of the game, Crews faced a 1-0 count from [autotag]Carlos Rodon[/autotag] and he got a 93 MPH inside fastball and DC did not miss it. He sent it on a ride at 399 feet to left field as it landed in the bullpen.

That wasn’t all for Crews in the game as he faced Rodon once again in the fourth inning and he got the best of him again. Again, he got an inside fastball and again he did not miss. Crews hit this one to left-center and it caromed off of the wall for an RBI double.

That increased the Nats lead to 5-1 and Washington would not look back. The Nats won the game 5-2 and DC looks to be fitting in just fine at the major league level.

9 LSU baseball transfers make Baseball America top 100

Jay Johnson has been recruiting at an incredibly high level since stepping foot on the Bayou.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] has been recruiting at an incredibly high level since stepping foot on the Bayou. He has had a top-five recruiting class every season and that is just the high school recruits.

With the new landscape of college baseball, you have to be able to re-tool your team with some of the best transfer players in the country. Johnson did just that this year as he has signed nine of the top 100 collegiate transfers according to Baseball America.

[autotag]Daniel Dickinson[/autotag] appears at No. 2 on the list. He is an infielder who played at Utah Valley where he was a star for the last two seasons. [autotag]Anthony Eyanson[/autotag] comes in at No. 4 on the list. Eyanson is a right-handed pitcher who transfers to LSU after spending time at UCSD. [autotag]Deven Sheerin[/autotag] is a right-handed pitcher from Mount St. Mary’s who comes in at No. 8 on the list.

[autotag]Jacob Mayers[/autotag] is a right-handed pitcher who comes in at No. 17 on the list, [autotag]Chandler Dorsey[/autotag] is a right-handed pitcher who comes in at No. 22 on the list, [autotag]Zac Cowan[/autotag] is a right-handed pitcher who comes in right behind him at No. 23, [autotag]Luis Hernandez[/autotag] is a utility player who comes in at No. 32 on the list, outfielder/left-handed pitcher [autotag]Dalton Beck[/autotag] is No. 34 on the list and outfielder [autotag]Chris Stanfield[/autotag] is at No. 79.

Dylan Crews makes MLB debut with Washington Nationals

Dylan Crews went 0 for 3 in his Major League debut with a strikeout and a walk.

After spending a year in the minor leagues, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] recently was called up to play for the [autotag]Washington Nationals[/autotag]. On Monday night, he made his first start as the Nationals hosted the New York Yankees in DC.

Crews had a relatively quiet night in his debut as he finished the game going 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a walk. That’s the game of baseball for you, even potential superstars go hitless in some games.

Crews had a .270 batting average across two minor-league teams as he made his way from the Nationals Double-A affiliate to the Triple-A affiliate and now to the major leagues.

The Nats are 12 games out of a wildcard spot in the National League so they are pulling out all the stops to try to make one final playoff push before October. Maybe Crews can be the spark that the team needs to take them to the next level. We will be keeping up with Crews as he progresses in the majors.

Dylan Crews headed to the majors after getting called up from Washington Nationals

The No. 3 prospect in Major League Baseball is headed to the big show.

The No. 3 prospect in Major League Baseball is headed to the big show. Former LSU center fielder [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] has received his call-up to the [autotag]Washington Nationals[/autotag].

Crews was the No. 2 pick in the 2023 MLB draft by the Nationals and he started his professional career in rookie ball in 2023. He has flown through the minors and after spending time with the Harrisburg Senators (Double-A affiliate) and the Rochester Red Wings (Triple-A affiliate), he is headed to Washington.

Crews has a .272 average with 21 doubles, six triples, 13 homers, and 68 RBI between the AA and AAA affiliate teams. The Nationals are currently playing the Atlanta Braves in an NL East matchup. Crews will be making his debut on Monday against the New York Yankees.

The Nationals are currently 58-70 and 10.5 games out of a National League Wild Card spot. Hopefully, Crews can be the spark that the Nats need to fight for one of the wild card spots.

Former LSU baseball star Tre Morgan earns another minor league promotion

Tre Morgan is flying up the Rays prospect rankings and through their minor league system.

I recently wrote about how [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] had been playing at an incredibly high level for the [autotag]Tampa Bay Rays[/autotag] organization. He was recognized as one of the players in the hunt for the MiLB batting title.

Since being called up to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, Morgan has played in 53 games and has a .371 batting average with 17 doubles, one triple, six homers and 44 RBI. The former LSU first baseman has now received another call-up as he will now head to the Rays AA affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits.

Morgan is flying up the Rays prospect rankings and flying through the Rays organization as he has worked his way from rookie ball up to the Biscuits in two years. His next step would be a call-up to the Triple-A team and then the next step would be the MLB.

Congratulations to Tre for being called up once again. Hopefully, we will see him excel in Montgomery.

Former LSU baseball star Dylan Crews discusses his work off the field

Dylan Crews highlighted the “Families Helping Families” organization that he and his family were such a big part of in Baton Rouge.

Nationwide’s Road to the Show series highlights some of the best minor league players in the country and helps fans get acquainted with the players who could be the future of the MLB.

This time, they highlighted former LSU star outfielder [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], who is now in the [autotag]Washington Nationals[/autotag] farm system. Crews currently plays for the Nationals AAA affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings. In 44 games with the Red Wings, Crews has a .257 batting average with 10 doubles, three triples, seven homers and 24 RBI.

The next step for Crews would be a call-up to the majors. Nationwide focused on his off-the-field efforts more in their interview. Crews highlighted the “Families Helping Families” organization that he and his family were such a big part of in Baton Rouge.

“For every home erun that I hit, I personally would donate money to that organization, that charity,” Crews said. “For every homerun the team hit, my parents would donate that money to that organization.”

“But it wasn’t really about that, it was about getting those kids and those families all together and making them feel like they were one of us and that they had a friend and that they were welcome at any time.”

Hopefully, we get to see Dylan in the majors sooner rather than later.

Tre Morgan in the hunt for MiLB batting title

If he keeps playing this well, Tre Morgan will be called up again sooner than later.

[autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] has been a star in the [autotag]Tampa Bay Rays[/autotag] farm system. He earned All-Star honors and was selected to play in the MLB Future’s Game thanks to how well he has played this season.

Now he looks to add another accomplishment to the year. The season is winding down and, as of now, Morgan leads all full-season qualifiers in batting average. Across two classifications (Morgan has played for the Rays single A-team and the Rays A+ team) he has a .358 batting average.

He was called up to the Bowling Green Hot Rods after playing well for the Charleston River Dogs. Since receiving the call-up, he has played even better. Morgan has a .378 batting average in 52 games. He’s hit 17 doubles, one triple, six homers, and 44 RBI. His on-base percentage is up to .453 and his slugging percentage is up to .570.

If he keeps playing this well, Morgan will be called up again sooner than later.
