John Hunter Nemechek completed the first back-to-back victory effort of his career, convincingly winning Saturday’s Ambetter Health 200 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to follow up a big victory last week at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Nemechek held off rookie Chandler Smith by 0.424s on an overtime restart, leading a race-best 137 laps in the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and becoming the winningest driver in the series this season with four victories – upping his career total to six. The 26-year old second-generation NASCAR star now leads the championship run by 33-points over Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Hill, a three-time race winner in 2023 and the third place finisher on Saturday.

“They’ve had dominant JGR Supras the last couple years and I had to hold up my end of the bargain,’’ said a smiling Nemechek, who at one point led the field by more than 4s.

“It’s nerve-wracking for sure (the final restart), so I’m so proud of this No. 20 team and everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing,’’ Nemechek added, “I think (it was) our first clean race of the year and hats off to all our guys.

“I love coming up here, and shout out to a driver who is one of the masters up here,’’ he said with a smile, conceding “The Master” was tomorrow’s NASCAR Cup Series polesitter and JGR teammate Christopher Bell.

“I was a little worried there with the last restarts. We kept getting really good launches and were able to clear them but I didn’t know who was saving what. I was trying to save for Cole (Custer), he really pushed us there.”

The runner-up finisher Smith, who earned his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series pole position on Friday, led only the first lap but stayed in contention and kept the front pack honest throughout the day. Unfortunately for the 21-year old Kaulig Racing driver, there was a malfunction with his cool suit on the steamy summer New England afternoon and he was treated with IVs at the care center following the race, but reported being in good shape overall.

The race on the 1.058-mile oval included 10 caution periods — the last forcing an overtime finish. Nemechek had just rolled under the white flag when a pair of his closest challengers on the day – Cole Custer and Sheldon Creed — crashed behind him dueling for third place. The incident ended the race.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Custer — the youngest winner in NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series history when he won at New Hampshire in 2014 at the age of 16 – collided with RCR driver Creed while vying for third place. Custer, a two-time winner this season, had run among the top three for much of the race. Creed is still looking for his first victory of the season.

Behind Nemechek, Smith and Hill, Kaulig Racing’s Daniel Hemric and JGR rookie driver Sammy Smith rounded out the top five. Smith earned his first career stage win, taking the Stage 2 flag and leading 18 laps on the day.

JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier finished sixth after leading 27 laps early in the race and winning Stage 1, tying him with Nemechek for most stage wins (five) on the season.

Jeb Burton, who won earlier in the season at Talladega, finished seventh, followed by Josh Williams, the owner-driver collecting the 11th top-10 finish of his career and the first back-to-back top-10s of the season. Brett Moffitt and Mason Massey rounded out the New Hampshire top 10. It marked Massey’s first top-10 of 2023 as well.

Parker Kligerman, a New Englander and fan favorite, was collected in a 12-car accident during a restart only 71 laps into the event and had to settle for a 31st place finish. He came into the race ranked 13th, only six points out of 12th with the top-12 ranked drivers becoming Playoff eligible. Despite being in the multi-car accident, the race claimed enough caution casualties that Kligerman leaves his “hometown” track now ranked 12th – 16 points up on 13th place Burton.

As for Nemechek, he is currently riding a massive streak of career accomplishment.

“Now it’s time to keep clicking off these victories,’’ Nemechek said.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to action next Saturday with the Pocono 225 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway (5:30 p.m. ET, USA Network, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Noah Gragson – now a rookie in the NASCAR Cup Series – is the defending Xfinity Series race winner.

Defending winner Bell grabs ‘really fun’ Cup Series pole at Loudon

Christopher Bell is on top again at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, this time in NASCAR Cup Series qualifying. Bell, who won at the track last year, earned the pole Saturday with a qualifying speed of 124.781mph (30.524s). It is his first pole at New …

Christopher Bell is on top again at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, this time in NASCAR Cup Series qualifying.

Bell, who won at the track last year, earned the pole Saturday with a qualifying speed of 124.781mph (30.524s). It is his first pole at New Hampshire and the fifth of his Cup Series career.

“That was a tough, man,” Bell said. “We did the tire test here in April and it was significantly cooler and the cars had a lot of grip, and that was the first time here with the low downforce package and I was surprised how much grip we had. But back-to-back from July last year to July this year, these things are sliding around like crazy and pretty evil to drive.

“It makes it really fun out there, and I’m really proud of this Rheem No. 20 group.”

Bell’s teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing, Martin Truex Jr., qualified second with a lap at 124.752mph.

Aric Almirola qualified third at 124.707mph, Joey Logano fourth at 124.589mph and Ryan Blaney fifth at 124.328mph.

Tyler Reddick qualified sixth at 124.308mph, William Byron seventh at 123.896mph, Bubba Wallace eighth at 123.871mph and Brad Keselowski ninth at 123.855mph.

Kyle Busch, who is listed 10th in the starting lineup, did not record a qualifying lap. Busch was the first driver on track in the final round and spun going into Turn 1 on what would have been his fast lap. His No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet hit the outside wall with the left rear.

It is still unclear if Busch will have to go to a backup car. The team is currently assessing the damage in the New Hampshire garage.

Kevin Harvick will start 13th in his 40th and, for now, final, start at New Hampshire. Harvick’s fastest lap was 124.479mph.

After putting down the fastest lap in practice, Michael McDowell qualified 17th with a lap at 124.207mph.

Ty Gibbs got loose in Turn 2 and got sideways in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. The disrupted lap of 121.268mph put Gibbs last on the starting grid.

Michael McDowell had the fastest overall lap in Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series practice session at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, topping the charts at 126.416mph (30.129s). He ran 26 laps.

“For a guy that normally sucks at New Hampshire, that’s a really good practice,” McDowell said. “I’m really proud of (crew chief) Travis Peterson and everybody at Front Row (Motorsports). Short tracks were our struggle, and we’ve turned it around this year. Richmond was good. Phoenix was good.

“We had our fingers crossed that we could nail it at New Hampshire and so far we have. The Pete Store Ford Mustang was good. We have to go out there and do it in qualifying now, but unloaded where we needed to be.”

Martin Truex Jr. was second fastest at 126.408mph. Truex dominated at New Hampshire last season for 172 laps led before finishing fourth.

The No. 19 was also fastest in the best five and 10-lap consecutive average.

Ross Chastain was third fastest overall at 126.077mph, Tyler Reddick fourth at 125.907mph, Bubba Wallace fifth at 125.815mph, Justin Haley sixth at 125.678mph and Kyle Busch seventh at 125.599mph.

Busch had a slide off Turn 2 and slapped the wall with the right rear and then the right front of his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. While it required attention from his crew, Busch did get back on track for additional laps before the session ended.

Brad Keselowski was eighth fastest at 125.587mph and teammate Chris Buescher was ninth at 125.310mph. Christopher Bell completed the top 10 at 125.257mph.

Bell is the defending race winner in New Hampshire. He was fastest in the best 15 consecutive lap average.

There are 36 drivers entered in the Crayon 301. Cole Custer is making his second start with Rick Ware Racing in the No. 51 Ford, and was 27th fastest in practice.

Ryan Newman is also back with Rick Ware Racing this weekend, driving the No. 51 Ford, and was 34th.
