Chandler Smith won the battle. John Hunter Nemechek won the war.

The Joe Gibbs Racing teammates spent most of Saturday afternoon racing each other for the top spot in The LiUNA!, a 300-mile NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was Nemechek who proved superior in the long run.

After Smith won the first two stages of the race — the second with a deft last-lap pass of Nemechek’s No. 20 Toyota — Nemechek asserted his dominance.

By the time Nemechek crossed the finish line at the end of lap 200, he held a 4.36s lead over pole winner Cole Custer, who had charged into second place after a late cycle of green flag pit stops.

“Hats off to all the guys on this No. 20 team for Joe Gibbs Racing,” said Nemechek, who led a race-high 99 laps in securing his first victory of the season, his first at Las Vegas and the 10th of his career.

“Man, it’s awesome to come out here and win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with a limited number of starts. Our goal is to come and win as many as we possibly could. Nothing else matters.

“Congrats to Tyler (Allen). He’s the crew chief this year on the No. 20 car — his first win as a crew chief. Our spotter, Ryan Blanchard — his first win as well… Man, it feels so good to win here in Las Vegas. Got to rest for tomorrow, so I’m excited.”

Now full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series with Legacy Motor Club, Nemechek will race in Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 (3:30pm ET on FOX, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Smith arguably had the best car in the race until he pitted with the rest of the field at the second stage break.

“We just over-adjusted a little bit,” said Smith, who led 74 laps, including the first 49, and came home third. “[We were] trying to stay ahead of the race track, and it feels actually like it might have gotten a little colder as well.

“It felt like track definitely freed up, and we went in that same direction, thinking it was going to tighten up. So you live and you learn… We were pretty dominant and we just over-adjusted, but I’m happy that a Joe Gibbs Racing car still won.”

Austin Hill, who triumphed in the first two races of the season, at Daytona and Atlanta, was fourth, with Riley Herbst finishing fifth after dominating the Las Vegas race last fall. AJ Allmendinger, Ryan Sieg, Sammy Smith, Brandon Jones and Justin Allgaier completed the top 10.

Hill retained his series lead by 22 points over Smith in second. Hailie Deegan was the top Sunoco rookie with a 15th-place finish.

For the second time in three races, ill fortune beset JR Motorsports’ Sam Mayer, who completed just 22 of 120 laps in the season opener at Daytona.

Mayer was running 10th on lap eight on Saturday when the No. 31 Chevrolet of fifth-place qualifier Parker Retzlaff turned sideways in front of him and slammed into the right side of Mayer’s car, knocking him out of the race.

“It’s just the year from hell,” Mayer said. “Very frustrating and unfortunate and can’t wait to get to Phoenix [for next Saturday’s race].”

Another early casualty was New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen, who took his Kaulig Racing Chevrolet behind the wall with overheating problems after completing 27 laps.

Van Gisbergen and Mayer finished 37th and 38th respectively in the 38-car field.

John Hunter Nemechek wins Xfinity Series race at Las Vegas, full results and race recap

John Hunter Nemechek wins the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Check out the full results, race recap from Las Vegas!

The NASCAR Xfinity Series arrived at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with heavy winds in their way. Luckily, it didn’t impact the event much, and the Xfinity Series put on a show. At the end of the day, a NASCAR Cup Series driver took the victory in dominant fashion during the Final Stage over three highly talented competitors.

[autotag]John Hunter Nemechek[/autotag] won the Xfinity Series race at Las Vegas, sweeping the day for Joe Gibbs Racing. Nemechek’s teammate Chandler Smith won the first two stages of the event. The driver of the No. 20 car had a healthy gap to second place as Cole Custer passed Smith and Austin Hill near the end of the race at Las Vegas.

Nemechek won’t earn a playoff spot since he is full-time in the Cup Series; however, it’s a good reminder that he can run out front. The Cup Series is a different beast, and Nemechek hopes his No. 42 car for Legacy Motor Club has the same speed on Sunday.

Nemechek sees key benefits in running Cup/Xfinity double duty

John Hunter Nemechek had a simple explanation to why he’s pulling double duty the first few weeks of the NASCAR season when he has a new ride in the Cup Series.

“Why not?” Nemechek said.

Nemechek has a second shot in the Cup Series with Legacy Motor Club, which hired him to drive the No. 42 Toyota. It will be his second full season in the Cup Series after a 2020 rookie campaign with Front Row Motorsports, where he earned three top-10 finishes and finished 27th in the championship standings. After the season concluded, Nemechek announced he wouldn’t return to the organization. He has spent the last few years winning races in the Craftsman Truck Series and Xfinity Series.

Now the 27-year-old is back where he wanted to be and in much better equipment. But his time and focus will be split this year, especially at the start of the season, as Nemechek will run 10 races in the Xfinity Series for Joe Gibbs Racing. Of those 10 races, Nemechek is doing the first five to start the season: Daytona, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Circuit of The Americas.

“I like to race,” Nemechek said. “I like to be in race cars, and I think getting more laps is more beneficial for myself. Being able to work with the same group of guys at JGR that are on the 20 car besides two positions, I think everyone is still the same. It’s big for me to come back this year and have fun and try to go win races, not really knowing what the Cup side has in store for the first few as far as speed and other things.

“For myself, I wanted to put myself in a situation where I can gain confidence on Saturday and go into Sunday and be able to go out there and strive, learn some things from Saturday to try to apply to Sunday. I’m a race car driver. If we could run all three series every weekend, I’d be raising my hand to be into that.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1428]

Nemechek won seven races in the Xfinity Series with Gibbs last season and made the Championship 4. He has nine wins in 102 starts.

Over the last three years, Nemechek regained the confidence in himself that was lost when struggling in the Cup Series the first time. But he put himself in a position to succeed by aligning with Toyota and winning organizations like Kyle Busch Motorsports and then Gibbs. It’s also been three years of learning, which Nemechek will be doing again in the Cup Series.

Not only is he driving a car completely different from his rookie season, but it’s also different from what he’s been running in the Xfinity Series. Nemechek doesn’t expect many issues in driving two different cars, but there are some noticeable differences he’ll be aware of on his double-duty weekends.

“I think it’s just remembering what transmissions are in each, where the switches are,” Nemechek said. “(Friday in Atlanta), I went to kill the ignition switch after finishing my qualifying lap, and I reached to where my Cup one is, and it wasn’t in the same spot. So, small things like that.

“But as far as everything else, it’s similar so far. Daytona and Atlanta will be similar; we’re going to have more differences between the two cars when you get to (Las) Vegas, Phoenix, COTA, places like that.”

Joe Gibbs Racing reveals John Hunter Nemechek’s Xfinity schedule for 2024

Joe Gibbs Racing revealed John Hunter Nemechek’s Xfinity Series schedule for the 2024 NASCAR season on Monday afternoon.

[autotag]Joe Gibbs Racing[/autotag] has a star-studded lineup in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for the 2024 season. Sheldon Creed and Chandler Smith will be the team’s full-time drivers, while Aric Almirola runs a part-time schedule. Also, [autotag]John Hunter Nemechek[/autotag] will double-dip with starts in the No. 20 car. On Monday afternoon, Nemechek’s schedule for the 2024 season was revealed.

Joe Gibbs Racing announced that Nemechek will drive the No. 20 car in 10 Xfinity Series races during the 2024 NASCAR season. The Legacy Motor Club driver will start his schedule at Daytona International Speedway. Most notably, Nemechek will also compete at the Circuit of the Americas on March 23, Iowa Speedway on June 15, and the Chicago Street Course on July 6.

The former full-time Xfinity Series driver ran well with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2023. Nemechek came close to winning the Xfinity Series championship on a late-race restart but drove into Turn 1 too deep. Nemechek can continue his success in the Xfinity Series without significant pressure. It’s the perfect situation for Nemechek as he returns to the NASCAR Cup Series full-time.

NASCAR Cup Series drivers Bubba Wallace and John Hunter Nemechek will make their IMSA debuts later this month in the Michelin Pilot Challenge series at Daytona International Speedway.

The Toyota NASCAR representatives will share a Smooge Racing Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO in the four-hour contest set for Friday, January 26, the day prior to IMSA’s Rolex 24 At Daytona. The duo will share the No. 23 Supra with NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion Corey Heim.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1406]

“We are very excited to run two GR Supra GT4 EVOs at Daytona this year,” said team principal Kevin Conway, who drives the sister No. 68 GR Supra with John Geesbreght and Corey Lewis.

“Having Bubba, John Hunter and Corey in the 23 car is a major honor and testament to Smooge Racing, I’m also looking forward to racing with John Geesbreght and Corey Lewis in the PRAX Leadership GR Supra. John and I have had a lot of success together and we are looking forward to building on that at Daytona.”

John Hunter Nemechek’s crew chief with Legacy Motor Club in 2024 revealed

John Hunter Nemechek’s crew chief for the No. 42 car with Legacy Motor Club in 2024 has been revealed. Find out Nemechek’s crew chief!

[autotag]John Hunter Nemechek[/autotag] will make the move to the No. 42 Cup car for Legacy Motor Club in 2024 and a familiar face will join him. Legacy Motor Club announced on Monday morning that [autotag]Ben Beshore[/autotag] will be Nemechek’s crew chief next year. Beshore and Nemechek were paired at Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series during the 2023 season.

This won’t be the first time that either party has been full-time in the Cup Series. Nemechek spent the 2020 season as the driver of the No. 38 car for Front Row Motorsports before moving down to the NASCAR Truck Series to rebuild his career with Toyota. As for Beshore, he was Kyle Busch’s crew chief in 2021 and 2022 before the driver left for Richard Childress Racing.

Overall, this is a great decision by Legacy Motor Club as the duo showed great promise in 2023. Nemechek went on to win seven Xfinity Series races but fell short of clinching the championship. Luke Lambert, the previous crew chief for the No. 42 car, could stay with the organization but his status is to be determined.

John Hunter Nemechek to drive for Legacy Motor Club at Homestead

Legacy Motor Club announced on Monday afternoon that John Hunter Nemechek will drive the No. 42 Cup car at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

[autotag]Legacy Motor Club[/autotag] released a video of co-owner Jimmie Johnson talking about an “important message” and it certainly came as a surprise. Johnson announced that [autotag]John Hunter Nemechek[/autotag] will drive the No. 42 car for Legacy Motor Club in this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Nemechek is set to become the full-time driver of the No. 42 Cup car in 2024; however, the current Joe Gibbs Racing competitor will now have a shot at racing in 2023. Nemechek’s last start in the Cup Series came at Homestead during the 2022 season as he replaced Bubba Wallace in the No. 45 car for 23XI Racing following his suspension.

Now, the driver of the No. 20 Xfinity car for Joe Gibbs Racing will be performing double duty at Homestead. While the No. 42 entry is backed by Chevrolet and not Toyota yet, it will be good for Nemechek to get one run with Legacy Motor Club before he makes the full-time switch next year.

Nemechek capitalizes late to claim Xfinity victory in Texas

John Hunter Nemechek made the winning pass with seven laps remaining in Saturday’s Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Texas Motor Speedway to punch his ticket to the next round of the series Playoffs and increase his series-best and career-best single season total to seven victories.

His No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota led only 38 of the day’s 200 laps, but managed to get around Big Machine Racing’s Parker Kligerman and race off to a 1.005s victory – his second at the 1.5-mile Texas track.

The winning move came after Kligerman and the day’s most dominant driver, Justin Allgaier, dueled side-by-side at the front of the field. Allgaier, who swept both stage victories and led a race best 133 laps, got loose in a door-to-door battle for the race lead with Kligerman and drifted up track following a restart with 10 laps remaining. Kligerman pushed forward but was unable to hold off Nemechek.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Sammy Smith finished third followed by Kaulig Racing’s Chandler Smith. Allgaier recovered from the tight racing with Kligerman to finish fifth. The top eight finishing drivers at Texas – also including Cole Custer, Austin Hill and Sheldon Creed – are all Playoff contenders.

“I messed up that restart, but I knew I had to push hard and try to recover right there and man, hats off to this team, Joe Gibbs Racing. It’s been amazing what we’ve been able to accomplish this year and we’re not done yet,’’ said Nemechek.

“We’re preparing for the Round of 8,’’ he continued. “My goal coming into today was to lock ourselves into the next round. Our road courses haven’t been that great for myself. Joe Gibbs as an organization has been really good on road courses. But going into the [Charlotte] ROVAL and hot having to worry about that is definitely a relief.’’

Kligerman, who is racing in his first NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs, was hugely disappointed on pit road despite tying a career best runner-up effort (also at Road America this summer) in the No. 48 Big Machine Racing Chevrolet. His work at Texas brought him to within a single point of the eight drivers who can advance to the next Playoff round following the Oct. 7 Charlotte ROVAL race – the elimination event of this round.

“Had a great run, got to him [Allgaier] and I don’t know how much we got squeezed or didn’t. I thought I could clear him super easily, but I got super loose,’’ he said. “Feels like I got choked; he says he gave a lot of room. I’ll have to look at it.

“I’m really disappointed right now,’’ Kligerman added. “I could see that one, I could feel it. That was the best restart I’ve ever had in my life, put us in perfect position and had the tire advantage, just choked. This one will hurt, but we’ll go make up for it next weekend.’’

For his part, Allgaier was equally as disappointed and frustrated. He approached Kligerman on pit road after the race to discuss the close racing and fallout from it. He had battled from the back after being squeezed out of the lead pack earlier in the race by Chandler Smith which forced him to take his last set of fresh tires earlier than his competitors. Nemechek and Kligerman were able to take new tires on their last stop during a caution with 20 laps remaining while Allgaier’s tires had 11 laps on them at that point and stayed out – in the lead – during that final caution.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1428]

Kligerman and Nemechek made their way back toward Allgaier quickly on their fresh tires with Kligerman pulling forward to try and make the winning move in the final 10 laps.

“At that point, obviously we had a really fast Camaro all day,’’ said Allgaier, who already advanced to the next Playoff round by winning the round opener at Bristol last week.

“We put ourselves in good position. That last caution kind of hurt us because we didn’t have tires, but still thought we’d do a good job.

“Parker, when I went and I talked to him, said I squeezed him. I felt like I left him plenty of room there knowing he’d go to the bottom and he drove it in super, super deep into [Turn] 3. And he’s been around the sport long enough to know what’s going to happen. Just disappointed. Not only did it mess up battling for second it put us way up in the marbles.”

With a season-high 12 caution periods on Saturday, there was plenty of drama. Only 17 cars in the 38-car field managed to avoid any kind of accident involvement. And by mid-race, half of the 12-driver Playoff field had dealt with some incident.

JR Motorsports’ driver Sam Mayer, a two-time race winner this season and Playoff contender hit the wall on the opening lap doing enough damage to his No. 1 JRM Chevrolet he couldn’t continue and suffered a last place finish (38th).

He started the Texas race ranked 10th only 14 points behind Creed in the final cutoff position – but left the Lone Star State ranked last among the Playoff competitors, 34 points back and essentially needing a walk-off victory in the next Playoff race at the Charlotte ROVAL.

“We’re going to have to make something happen,” Mayer said, “our backs are up against the wall.’’

With one race remaining in this opening Playoff round, Nemechek and Allgaier have automatically secured their next round positions as has Custer, who clinched Saturday by virtue on points earned. The regular season champion Hill holds a 44-point edge on the Playoff elimination line. Chandler Smith and Sammy Smith are 32 and 18 points to the good, respectively. Creed takes a nine-point edge to the good into the Charlotte ROVAL race. Daniel Hemric – who finished 24th Saturday – holds a tenuous single-point edge over Kligerman, who is in the ninth position.

Jeb Burton (-19), Josh Berry (-27) and Mayer (-34) are behind Kligerman – all three involved in incidents at Texas.

Up next is the Oct. 7 Drive for the Cure 250 presented by BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina at the Charlotte ROVAL (3 p.m. ET, NBC, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) – the final Playoff race of this round.

John Hunter Nemechek wins seventh Xfinity Series race of 2023 at Texas

John Hunter Nemechek wins his seventh NASCAR Xfinity series race of the 2023 season at Texas Motor Speedway.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series went to Texas Motor Speedway for the second race of the Round of 12 and it lived up to the high expectations. It was wild right off the bat when Sam Mayer hit the wall and put himself in a must-win situation alongside JR Motorsports teammate Josh Berry. Meanwhile, [autotag]John Hunter Nemechek[/autotag] won his seventh race of the year on a late restart at Texas.

Nemechek had the best car in the Final Stage and was able to pass Justin Allgaier and Parker Kligerman after the two drivers got out of the groove in Turn 3. It allowed the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to pull ahead and cruise to a spot in the Round of 8. As for Kligerman, his mistake means he continues to sit below the playoff cut-line.

The final race of the Round of 12 will be in two weeks at the Charlotte ROVAL and it is bound to be a crazy event.
