Anders Carlson named a Lou Groza Award semifinalist

Auburn kicker Anders Carlson has made 15 out of 17 field goal attempts this season while also handling kickoff duties.

Anders Carlson has been a stable kicker for Auburn so far this season and he’s now getting some recognition.

On Monday, Carlson was named one of the 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza National Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. This is nothing new to the Carlson family as Daniel, Anders’ older brother, was a finalist for the award three years in a row during his time on the Plains.

In his junior season, Carlson has made 15-of-17 field goal attempts and missed just one extra point out of 23 tries. Also handling kickoff duties, he has recorded 30 touchbacks.

Carlson is joined by Florida’s Evan McPherson, Missouri’s Harrison Mevis, Georgia’s Jack Podlesny, Alabama’s Will Reichard and LSU’s Cade York as representatives from the SEC.

Blake Haubeil named to Lou Groza preseason 2020 watch list

Ohio State placekicker Blake Haubeil has been named to the Lou Groza 2020 preseason watch list as announced on Wednesday.

There have been a litany of college football preseason award watch lists come out over the last week or so, and many of them have a Scarlet and Gray hue to them. So too does the Lou Groza Award that goes to the best college placekicker annually.

According to an announcement Wednesday, Ohio State placekicker Blake Haubeil is among the names appearing on the Groza’s preseason watch list for 2020.

The Award has was first handed out in 1992 and is awarded by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. It is named after Lou Groza (of course) who was on the Ohio State freshman football team before enlisting in the U.S. Army as World War II raged on.  He played in just three games on the freshman team but became Hall of Famer in the NFL after playing 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

Mike Nugent is the only Ohio State player to win the award. He was a runaway winner after an unbelievable 2004 campaign.

Gators kicker Evan McPherson named to Lou Groza Award watch list

The Groza Award is given annually to the nation’s top placekicker. Last year, it was given to Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship.

UF kicker Evan McPherson has been named to the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Wednesday.

The Groza Award is given annually to the nation’s top placekicker. Last year, it was given to Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship.

From the watch list, 20 semifinalists will be chosen on Nov. 5. The list will then be further cut to three finalists on Nov. 24 before the winner is announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 10.

McPherson is no newcomer to the watch list; it’s the junior’s third time appearing on it in three seasons. As a true freshman in 2018, he was a semifinalist for the award, hitting 17 of 19 field goals. He repeated that performance as a sophomore, giving him the 10th-best field-goal percentage nationally (as well as the best in the SEC). He was accurate even from range, making 7 of 8 attempts from 40 yards or longer.

His 89.5 percent conversion rate on field goals is currently the best mark in school history and tied for the best career mark by an active FBS kicker with multiple seasons.

LSU kicker Cade York named to Lou Groza Award watch list

York was outstanding as a freshman for the Tigers in 2019.

LSU sophomore kicker Cade York was named to the 2020 Lou Groza Award watch list this week.

York was outstanding as a freshman for the Tigers in 2019, sending 21-of-27 field goals through the uprights in his first year.

On extra point attempts, York was 89-of-93, good for a 95.7 kicking percentage. His field goal percentage was 77.8%.

The Tigers’ highly-touted kicker went 8-of-8 on kicks between 20 and 29 yards.

From 30-39 yards, York went 4-for-4 and on 40-49 yards he was 5-of-10. In long distance kicks, of 50 or more yards, York went 4-for-5. His longest kick of the season was 52 yards.

From a kicking standpoint, York scored 152 points for the Tigers in 2019.

He will certainly be called upon when necessary this season, and he has a chance to win the Lou Groza Award if he can exceed what he accomplished last season.

The Lou Groza Award is given annually to the best kicker in college football. Since the award was started in 1992, no LSU kicker has ever won it.

York’s accuracy sets him apart from other kickers not only in the SEC, but in the entire country.

Currently, York ranks seventh all-time in program history with his 77.8 kicking percentage.

He will be up against solid competition for the award, but if he can keep the momentum, York might just be able to bring home his third hardware as an LSU Tiger with the first two being an SEC Championship followed by a College Football Playoff National Championship ring this past season.
