Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Cam Talbot (27-20-6, 2.5 GAA, .913 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Stuart Skinner (36-16-5, 2.62 GAA, .905 SV%, 2 SO)

Talbot has been the most consistent goalie for the Kings this season and his rankings prove that. His record and SO each rank 11th in the league, his SV% is tied for 10th-best, and his 2.5 GAA is the 7th-best. The Kings are 4-2 in his last 6 starts.

Skinner has the 3rd-best record in the NHL with 36 wins. His other stats are middle-of-the-pack with his GAA being 14th-best and his SV% ranking 25th. The Oilers are 3-2 in his last 5 starts while he has allowed 2 goals or fewer in 4 of those 5 games.

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 3, Kings 2

Moneyline

BET OILERS (-175).

The Oilers are among the best teams in the NHL and are a real threat to win the Stanley Cup. They are 28-9-4 at home this season, including 3-2 in their last 5. They let their foot off the throttle slightly toward the end of the regular season, but on Monday they will pick up where they left off. They face a Kings team that is 1-3 in their last 4 road games.

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS.

While the Oilers are the better team, the Kings can keep this game within reach. However, Kings +1.5 (-185) holds minimal value to make a wager.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6 (-120).

This series will feature 2 premier goalies along with 2 great defenses. The Kings have a 30-49-3 Over record this season while the Oilers have a 35-43-4 Over record. LA has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 6 of its last 7 while Edmonton has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 7 of its last 9.

Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 5 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 5 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings and the Edmonton Oilers shift their series back to Edmonton Tuesday for Game 5 of the Western Conference quarterfinals. The series is tied 2-2. Puck drop from Rogers Place is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Kings vs. Oilers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Oilers evened the series with a 5-4 overtime victory Sunday in Game 4. The Kings had fired out to a 3-0 lead after the 1st period and appeared to be on their way to taking a commanding 3-1 series lead. The Oilers had other ideas in the 2nd period, however, as D Evan Bouchard struck on the power play and C Leon Draisaitl struck at even strength before adding the tying goal with the man advantage in the waning seconds of the period.

Kings D Mathieu Roy beat G Jack Campbell early in the 3rd period to give L.A. another lead. Campbell had replaced G Stuart Skinner after the opening frame. Oilers LW Evander Kane struck late in regulation to force overtime.

LW Zach Hyman netted the game-winning goal at 10:39 of overtime with a helper from Bouchard to draw the series even. We’ll now see how the Kings respond after the emotional loss.

Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Joonas Korpisalo (18-14-4, 2.87 GAA, .915 SV%, 1 SO – regular season) vs. Jack Campbell (21-9-4, 3.41 GAA, .888 SV%, 1 SO – regular season)

Korpisalo was on the short end of the 5-4 OT loss, kicking aside 37 of the 42 shots he faced. He was unable to hold the 3-0 lead he was staked through 20 minutes and was even given a brief one-goal lead in the 3rd period, but again coughed it up.

Campbell came on in relief of Skinner and turned aside 27 of the 28 shots he faced in his first appearance since April 5 at the Anaheim Ducks in the regular season. Campbell had won his final 4 starts of the regular season, all against non-playoff teams.

Campbell allowed 2 goals on 13 shots in relief on Jan. 9 in Los Angeles in a 6-3 setback.

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 4, Kings 3

Moneyline

The Oilers (-225) have to feel great about their comeback in Los Angeles in Game 4. Edmonton was staring into the abyss, facing a 3-1 series lead.

While Edmonton has the momentum heading home, you can’t risk more than 2 times your potential return. We have had overtime in 3 of the first 4 games in this series, so expect another close game.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The KINGS +1.5 (-135) are a solid play on the puck line. While I am expecting the Oilers to eke out the Game 5 win, pushing Los Angeles to the brink, I wouldn’t be surprised to see yet another overtime game. Only 1 of the first 4 games in this series has been decided in regulation.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-115) is the lean in Game 5.

We had a total of 9 goals in Game 4, and we should get some more fire-wagon hockey in this pivotal game. In Game 1 in Edmonton, he had a total of 7 goals, and an average of 6.5 goals per game in the first 2 battles at Rogers Place. I expect to see this one inch across the finish line for an Over, too.

Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 2 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 2 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings visit the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday for Game 2 of the Western Conference quarterfinals. Puck drop from Rogers Place is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN). Los Angeles leads the series 1-0. Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Kings vs. Oilers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Things opened well enough for the Oilers. C Leon Draisaitl scored an even-strength goal at 6:57 of the 1st period, and D Evan Bouchard notched a power-play goal at 12:31 to make it 2-0.

There wasn’t any more scoring until the 3rd period, and that’s when the dam broke for the Kings offense. C Adrian Kempe scored 2 goals, sandwiching another marker for Draisaitl. The Oilers still led 3-2 until there were just 17 seconds remaining in regulation. That’s when C Anze Kopitar struck for a power-play goal and forced overtime.

In the extra session, LW Al Iafallo took advantage of a tripping call on D Vincent Desharnais at 9:03 in OT, bagging the winner 16 seconds later as the Kings stole Game 1 and seized home-ice advantage.

Kings at Oilers Game 2 projected goalies

Joonas Korpisalo (18-14-4, 2.87 GAA, .914 SV%, 1 SO – regular season) vs. Stuart Skinner (29-14-5, 2.75 GAA, .913 SV%, 1 SO – regular season)

The 28-year-old Finn got off to a great start in Game 1, kicking aside 37 of the 40 shots he faced in the OT win. He has won 3 consecutive starts and 4 of his last 5 outings since the beginning of April.

The All-Star Skinner coughed up 4 goals on 35 shots in Game 1, but the loss shouldn’t be hung on him. The power-play goal with 17 seconds left in regulation was a 6-on-4 situation, and Iafallo’s winner was also on the man advantage.

Kings at Oilers Game 2 picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 4, Kings 2

Moneyline

The Oilers (-225) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return, and that’s just too risky, especially for a team that fell apart in Game 1.

PASS, and look to the puck line instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

The OILERS -1.5 (+120) are a much better value on the puck line at plus money.

Edmonton needs a bounce-back game on home ice, and it will get it. The Oilers had won 9 straight games to close out the regular season, and they covered 8 of the 9 times on the puck line as a favorite. That includes 2 victories over the Kings, once in Edmonton and once in Los Angeles.

Over/Under

The UNDER 6.5 (-115) is a decent option as I expect Skinner to bounce back and for the Oilers to be a little more disciplined.

The Under is 10-3-1 in the past 14 games for the Kings when playing on a single day of rest and is 7-3 in their last 10 games after a victory.

The Under is also 21-10-4 in the past 35 meetings in Edmonton despite the Over in Game 1, and the Under has cashed in 5 of the past 7 meetings in this series.

Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 1 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 1 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The 3rd-seed Los Angeles Kings go up against divisional-rival 2nd-seed Edmonton Oilers Monday in Game 1 of their 1st-round series at Rogers Place. Puck drop is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Kings vs. Oilers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Kings limped into the postseason with a 5-5-0 mark in the last 10. All-Star LW Kevin Fiala (lower body) has been out since April 1 and didn’t participate in practice Saturday. They also have a decision to make between the pipes as Pheonix Copley really saved their season, but Joonas Korpisalo has the playoff experience. LA is +185 underdogs to win the series.

Edmonton was dominant down the stretch as C Connor McDavid fed his teammates as well as he fed himself. He led the league in goals (63), assists (89) and points (153). The Oilers have the 3rd-shortest odds to win the Stanley Cup at +900 and 2nd-shortest (+300) to come out of the West. McDavid has a lot of early exits from the playoffs chirping at him on his shoulder, and he’s looking to go deep.

Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Joonas Korpisalo (18-14-4, 2.87 GAA, .915 SV%, 1 SO – reg. season) vs. Stuart Skinner (29-14-5, 2.75 GAA, .914 SV%, 1 SO – reg. season)

The Kings could go with either Copley or Korpisalo here, but I think the playoff experience will give the edge. Korpisalo went 7-3-1 with a 2.13 GAA and .921 SV% in 11 games since being acquired from Columbus. He started 9 postseason games in 2019-20 and helped upset the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was 3-5 with a 1.90 GAA, .941 SV% and 2 SO in those playoffs. He was great in a 2-0 loss to Edmonton March 30, stopping 35 of 37 shots.

Skinner’s emergence put this team into position to make some noise. He was awesome down the stretch, going 4-0-0 with a 1.25 GAA and .961 SV% in 4 April starts. He was 2-1-0 with a 1.78 GAA and .950 SV% in 4 games against LA this season. The last time he faced them, he delivered a 43-save shutout March 30.

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 3, Kings 2

Moneyline

The Kings played Edmonton hard this season, allowing them to only score 9 goals in 4 games. Their defense will keep it interesting, but Edmonton will be too ferocious to contain offensively. I might consider the chalky -200 Oilers ML here, but there is value to be had on the lesser-known options.

Head to the Win/Total section, and under 1×2 and Both Teams to Score 1 or More Goals in Regular Time: OILERS TO WIN AND YES (+100).

Puck line/Against the spread

The Kings were great on the puck line at 46-36 this season and especially good on the road at 26-15. I think they stay within a goal, and Edmonton only had 4 empty-netters all year, but I’m not paying -155 with the possibility of McDavid facing an empty net.

I think this one is tight throughout, so head to the Win/Total section again, and take OILERS AND UNDER 6.5 GOALS (+175).

Over/Under

As mentioned, I like the Under here. Despite going 9-0-1 in the last 10 games, Edmonton was just 3-5-2 O/U. The Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings and 4-1 in the last 5 in Edmonton. You can PASS here because we’re already banking on the Under in a mini-parlay. Or you can take the UNDER 6.5 (-110) banking on 2 hot goalies and 2 teams playing sound defense.

Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Pheonix Copley (23-4-3, 2.72 GAA, .899 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Stuart Skinner (24-14-5, 2.95 GAA, .908 SV%)

Copley has faced the Oilers once this season and allowed 3 goals on 31 shots in the Jan. 9 win. He’s 2-1-0 in 3 career games (2 starts) vs. Edmonton with a 2.07 GAA and .930 SV% (80 saves against 86 shots).

Skinner’s 2 career starts vs. the Kings have both been this season. He’s 0-1-0 vs. Los Angeles and has allowed 5 goals on 55 shots, good for a 3.66 GAA and .909 SV%.

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 4, Kings 3

Moneyline

BET OILERS (-155).

Edmonton is 7-1 in its last 8 games and 6-1 in its last 7 at home. The Oilers are on an 8-game points streak and are 4-1 in their last 5 games vs. teams with a winning record. This game is important for the Pacific Division standings and the Kings should struggle to beat the Oilers 3 times in 1 season.

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS.

Six of the Kings’ last 7 losses have been by just 1 goal. Los Angeles +1.5 (-170) should cover, but there is no need to pay the higher price on the puck line when Edmonton moneyline is the better play. Bet Edmonton ML and/or the total instead.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 6.5 (-170).

The Over is 9-3 in Los Angeles’ last 12 road games and 12-5-1 in its last 18 after allowing 2 or fewer goals in its previous contest.

The Over has gone 4-1-1 in Edmonton’s last 6 games vs. teams with a winning record and should hit again Thursday, but I’m going to wait and see if a lower price becomes available before puck drop.

The Kings are looking to rebound from a 6-5 loss on the road against the Calgary Flames Monday, snapping a 4-game win streak. Los Angeles has lit the lamp 9 times in the past 2 games, and it is averaging 3.4 goals per game (GPG) across the past 5 outings.

Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Jonathan Quick (6-5-1, 3.09 GAA, .895 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Stuart Skinner (3-3-0, 2.53 GAA, .932 SV%)

Quick allowed 6 goals on 30 shots last time out in Calgary Monday, but he had allowed just 8 goals in his previous 5 starts. He has struggled on the road this season, going 2-2-1 with a 3.56 GAA and .880 SV% in 5 starts away from home.

Skinner allowed just 2 goals on 42 shots in Saturday’s win at Florida, and he is projected to start the return home. While he was good against the Panthers, he allowed 9 goals in his previous 2 starts, and he is just 1-2-0 with a 3.73 GAA and .905 SV% in 3 November outings.

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 4, Kings 3

Moneyline

The OILERS (-150) are moderate favorites, and they’re worth playing in their return home after a 2-2-0 road trip.

The Oilers have cashed in 22 of the past 32 home games dating back to last season while winning 31 of their last 41 contests inside the division.

The Kings are also 4-11 in the past 15 trips to Edmonton while going 3-7 in the past 10 meetings in this series. Back the Oil.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Kings +1.5 (-190) are a little on the expensive side, costing you nearly 2 times your potential return if you would like some insurance.

If you like L.A., just play it straight up, but there is really no evidence the Kings will play well here. The Oilers have owned the Kings in recent seasons, and they’ve dominated overall inside the division.

PASS.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-130) is a little pricey, but it’s worth it.

It’s been all about the Over lately for the Kings, hitting at a 7-1-1 clip across the past 9 games on the road ad going 10-4-2 in the past 16 games overall.

The same holds true for the Oilers, as the Over is 3-0-1 in the past 4 games at home while going 3-1-1 in the past 5 games inside the division.

Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 7 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 7 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings travel to hostile territory to face the Edmonton Oilers Saturday in Game 7 of their 1st-round Western Conference playoff series. The series is tied 3-3. Puck drop from Rogers Place is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we look at the Kings vs. Oilers Game 7 odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Oilers avoided elimination with a 4-2 victory Thursday in Los Angeles. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead 1:50 into the second period, but the Kings rallied and managed to tie it in the first minute of the third period.

Edmonton regained the lead when D Tyson Barrie scored with 5:10 to go and sealed it on LW Evander Kane’s empty-netter with 1:00 remaining – his second goal of Game 6.

The Kings limited the Oilers’ special teams as they allotted them just 1 power play, which was unsuccessful. That’ll be a big key Saturday as the Kings can’t match the Oilers offensively.

The Oilers have benefitted from Kane becoming a monster in the series. His 7 playoff goals are tied for the NHL lead. C Connor McDavid has been great, scoring 3 goals with 9 assists for an NHL co-leading 12 playoff points. C Leon Draisaitl has 5 goals and 3 assists, but he really hasn’t been as big of a factor as Kane, who is a plus-8 in the series.

Kings at Oilers odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:26 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Kings +175 (bet $100 to win $175) | Oilers -220 (bet $220 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Kings +1.5 (-140) | Oilers -1.5 (+112)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -105 | U: -120)

Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Jonathan Quick (23-13-9, 2.59 GAA, .910 SV%, 2 SO – regular season) vs. Mike Smith (16-9-1, 2.81 GAA, .915 SV%, 2 SO – regular season)

Aside from his Game 4 shutout, Quick has been so-so in the series. He has a 3.66 GAA and .893 SV% with at least 3 going past him in each game except the shutout. He hasn’t been getting to the high-danger chances, either, as he’s 16th in the playoffs with a -0.3 goals saved above expected.

Coming into these playoffs, if I asked what goalie would be the best according to metrics, I guarantee Smith’s name wouldn’t have been in the top 5. Smith has actually been the best goalie in the postseason in terms of the above-average saves. He has an astounding 8.3 goals saved above expected. Smith has a 2.67 GAA and .931 SV% in the series, but 2 of his 3 losses have been at home.

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Kings 4, Oilers 3

Money line

The road team has won 4 games in this series, and there’s no chance I would take the Oilers at -220 to win a Game 7.

They have more talent, better goaltending and the home-ice advantage. So why are we fading them? Because they haven’t done it, and there’s a big cloud hanging over them to go far into the playoffs.

The Kings were supposed to be home by now so they have less to lose. They need to pound Smith with 40 shots as they are 2-1 in the series when they do. Plus, they’ll need to limit Kane.

McDavid will get his and set his teammates to get theirs, but that line can’t do it alone.

This is a major contrarian pick – Pregame.com has 91% of the cash on Edmonton. Which team has more poise under pressure? Remember how the Oilers coughed up the puck behind their net and lost Game 1? Advantage KINGS (+175).

Against the spread

If the Kings are going to pull this off, they might need OT. However, in the event they can’t pull it off, they’re going to get beat by more than 1 goal. PASS.

Over/Under

The Under cashed in Games 2, 4 and 6. The Over is 2-1 in Edmonton in the series, and the only time it didn’t cash was a 6-0 shutout.

The Kings are going to have to score to stay in the game, or they’re going to get shelled. LEAN OVER 6.5 (-105).

Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 5 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 5 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings (2-2) and Edmonton Oilers (2-2) face off Tuesday in Game 5 of their 1st-round Western Conference playoff series. Puck drop from Rogers Place is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN2).  Below, we look at the Kings vs. Oilers Game 5 odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Kings responded to a Game 3 defeat with a 4-0 shutout to even the series in Game 4 Sunday. This series has gone back and forth with laughers after a tight Game 1 that Edmonton literally gave away on a bad turnover.

Kings RW Carl Grundstrom emerged with 2 goals and an assist in Game 4. He has just 36 points in 129 career regular-season games. G Jonathan Quick was dominant stopping all 31 shots.

Oilers stud C Connor McDavid was kept in check after he had 2 points in each of the first 3 games of the series. C Leon Draisaitl was held scoreless after a goal in each of the first 3 games.

The Oilers were 0-for-3 on the power play, and they were outshot 46-to-31. Now they return home with a chance to refocus. They responded to throwing away Game 1 by winning the next two games 14-2. They’ll be ready.

  • Money line: Kings +175 (bet $100 to win $175) | Oilers -220 (bet $220 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Kings +1.5 (-140) | Oilers -1.5 (+112)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -105 | U: -120)

Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Jonathan Quick (23-13-9, 2.59 GAA, .910 SV%, 2 SO – regular season) vs. Mike Smith (16-9-1, 2.81 GAA, .915 SV%, 2 SO – regular season)

Quick has been feast or famine in this series. He is coming off a 31-save masterpiece in Game 4. At one point, he even lost his glove and was attempting to make saves with his bare hand. Before that, though, he allowed 10 goals in two games and didn’t finish Game 3. He has an .894 SV% in the series.

Smith has been pretty steady – it’s his offense that has been inconsistent. Smith has a 2.27 GAA and a .942 SV% in the series. The Kings have been relentless as he has faced 46 and 45 shots in the last two games. The Oilers’ blue line will need to step up as fatigue could set in seeing so many fired at him.

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 5, Kings 2

Money line

The Oilers return home, where they’ve outscored LA 9-4, despite losing Game 1 on a misplay behind the net. We’re definitely siding with the Oilers here, but not at the -220 price tag. PASS.

Against the spread

The Kings are playing with two starting defensemen out for the season. The Oilers had an off night Sunday in LA. Maybe they didn’t use Saturday wisely, but we could see them record 5 or 6 goals tonight. We’ll take the OILERS -1.5 (+112).

Over/Under

The Over has hit twice in this series, and the two occasions it didn’t hit were because a team got shut out. We expect Edmonton to respond offensively, and their goalie has seen nearly 100 shots in the last two games and at that rate a couple are bound to go in.

LEAN OVER 6.5 (-105) or place a live bet when the Over drops to 5.5. Neither side has scored within the first 3 minutes of any game in this series, and that might work to your advantage.

Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 2 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 2 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings (1-0) try to steal another game from the Edmonton Oilers (0-1) in Game 2 of their 1st-round Western Conference playoff series Wednesday. Puck drop from Rogers Place is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN2).  Below, we look at the Kings vs. Oilers odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Kings stole one in Game 1 as Oilers goalie Mike Smith tried to clear the puck from behind his net and turned it over, which led to the eventual winner. C Phillip Danault made it 4-3 with just over 5 minutes to go, and Edmonton couldn’t recover.

Edmonton studs C Connor McDavid and C Leon Draisaitl each scored a goal in Game 1 and will look to increase the wattage Wednesday. They combined for 8 shots on goal in the opener and you can look for them to respond to the body blow from Game 1 early in Game 2.

Kings at Oilers odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:05 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Kings +165 (bet $100 to win $165) | Oilers -205 (bet $205 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Kings +1.5 (-160) | Oilers -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -107 | U: -115)

Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Jonathan Quick (23-13-9, 2.59 GAA, .910 SV%, 2 SO – regular season) vs. Mike Smith (16-9-2, 2.81 GAA, .915 SV%, 2 SO – regular season)

Quick was great in Game 1 as 2 of the 3 goals that got past him were on the power play. He stopped 10 of 12 shots on the PK, and nothing got past him in the final 30 minutes. Quick was on fire in April with a 6-1 record, 2.24 GAA and .915 SV%. He was 1-1-1 with a 2.29 GAA and .918 SV% against Edmonton in the regular season.

Smith had some good spots and some really bad ones in Game 1. He allowed a somewhat soft goal to LW Brendan Lemieux in the 2nd period before the horrible gaffe on the game winner. Smith is now 11-18 with a 2.40 GAA and .929 SV% in his playoff career. He’ll be on a short leash.

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 3, Kings 2

Money line

The Oilers only lost Game 1 because of shaky goaltending and a bad mistake that happens once in a blue moon. They held the Kings scoreless across 4 power plays, had more hits and took more shots.

The Kings are a young team that may be a year ahead of where they were projected, and the Oilers have bitter recent history to fuel them. We’re not putting -205 stock in them, though. PASS.

Against the spread

Edmonton won the last 3 meetings of the series in the regular season, and 2 of them were by 1 goal. The 5-2 win in February came right after the Oilers fired their coach and went on a heater to right the ship. I don’t like the value of it, but LEAN KINGS +1.5 (-160). I prefer that side over an Oilers win by 2 or more markers.

Over/Under

The Under is 5-1-1 in the Kings’ last 7 playoff games as an underdog. The Over has hit in 3 of the last 4 meetings between these two sides, but I feel like this has to be a tighter game – particularly on Edmonton’s back end.

It’s not a great feel because these two teams have been anything but consistent, but we’ll LEAN UNDER 6.5 (-115).

Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 1 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers Game 1 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings are on the road to open their 1st-round Western Conference playoff series with the Edmonton Oilers Monday. Puck drop at Rogers Place is set for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we look at the Kings vs. Oilers odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Kings finished the regular season 44-27-11 for 99 points to earn the 3rd seed in the Pacific Division. L.A. has the second-lowest goal differential (+3) of any playoff team (the Dallas Stars are last at -8). The Kings are in the playoffs for the first time since a 1st-round exit in 2017-18. They haven’t advanced past the opening round since capturing the Stanley Cup in 2013-14.

The Oilers clinched opening-round home ice with 104 points on the heels of a 49-27-6 season. The Oilers have large playoff hopes after an astounding season from C Connor McDavid, who captured the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer with a career-high 123 points, while teammate C Leon Draisaitl tied his career-high as he finished 4th in the scoring race with 110 points. Edmonton has not advanced beyond the opening round since a 2nd-round exit in 2016-17.

Kings at Oilers odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 1:09 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Kings +160 (bet $100 to win $160) | Oilers -200 (bet $200 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Kings +1.5 (-160) | Oilers -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -105 | U: -120)

Kings at Oilers projected goalies

Jonathan Quick (23-13-9, 2.59 GAA, .910 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Mike Smith (16-9-2, 2.81 GAA, .915 SV%, 2 SO)

Quick rebounded in April after a rough stretch from January through March as he went 6-1-0 with a 2.24 GAA and .915 SV%. The veteran netminder was 1-1-1 in 3 games against the Oilers this season with a 2.29 GAA and .918 SV%, most recently taking a loss April 7 in a 3-2 defeat where he stopped 27 of 30 shots.

Smith had his best month of the season in April. The 40-year-old ‘tender finished 9-0-0 with a .951 SV% and 1.66 GAA while posting both of his shutouts along the way. He was 2-0 in two starts against L.A. with 61 saves on 65 shots.

[tipico]

Kings at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Edmonton 4, Los Angeles 2

Money line

The Oilers took 3 of 4 meetings from the Kings during the regular season, outscoring their division rival 13-12 across the series. Los Angeles’ lone victory came in an early December meeting while Smith was sidelined.

Both goaltenders come into Monday’s series opener playing excellent hockey, but Smith has been the better of the two and held the Kings in check during both of his starts against them in the regular season. Edmonton won those two games by a combined 8-4 mark.

Edmonton is one of the league’s premier offensive sides and should do enough to squeak by Monday. This is starting to push the limits of a money line bet. If it exceeds -200, you’d want to probably only consider it as part of a parlay and not a standalone, bet but you can BACK THE OILERS (-200) to take the series opener on home ice for now.

Against the spread

I wouldn’t get too carried away here — the Kings have mostly played the Oilers tight throughout the season. However, the better offensive team and the better goaltender should give an edge to the home side and the pressure will be ramped up on L.A. to even the game late in the final frame. That should produce additional chances at the empty-net goal and lend some value to the OILERS -1.5 (+125).

Over/Under

Playoff hockey tends to be physical, defensive affairs, and with Quick and Smith both playing well lately I wouldn’t bank on either getting totally shelled Monday. A small lean to the UNDER 6.5 (-120) is my play here.
