March Madness: Longwood vs. Houston odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Longwood vs. Houston odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 16 seed Longwood Lancers (21-13) face the top-seeded Houston Cougars (30-4) Friday in a 1st-round game in the NCAA Tournament. Tip from FedExForum in Memphis is scheduled for 9:20 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Longwood vs. Houston odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

As the 5th-seed in the Big South Tournament, Longwood won 3 games and took down the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs 85-59 in the title game. They covered as a 3.5-point underdog and the Over (137.5) cashed. Longwood is led by the 2nd-team All-Big South G Wayne Napper, who averaged 14.6 points, 4.6 assists and 4 rebounds per game. The Lancers were 16-15 against the spread (ATS), and just 4-2 ATS over their last 6 regular-season games; they went 3-0 ATS in the conference tourney.

The Cougars come into the NCAA Tournament with a bitter taste in their mouth after getting trounced by the Iowa State Cyclones 69-41 in the Big 12 Tournament title game. They lost as 5.5-point favorites and the Under (123.5) cashed. Houston is the best defensive team in the country allowing only 57 points per game. They also bring 1st-team All-American G Jamal Shead, who averaged 13.1 points, 6.2 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game. Houston finished 16-16-2 ATS, including 2-3 ATS in their last 5 regular-season games.

Houston is No. 2 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Longwood vs. Houston picks and predictions

Prediction

Houston 81, Longwood 55

Moneyline

PASS.

You should obviously avoid betting Houston (-10000) as these odds are ridiculously high. That’s just not smart sports betting. Back the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

BET HOUSTON -23.5 (-110).

These are always the toughest games to handicap when you’ve got an obvious mismatch in talent level. Most everyone would expect Houston to wipe the floor with Longwood, but this Lancer team is tough which they showcased in the Big South Tournament.

The reason I’m taking the Cougars to cover the big number is because they have a huge chip on their shoulder after losing the way they did in the Big 12 Tournament. They are going to want to show the whole field that they’re here to stay for the long haul. That starts with a statement against Longwood in the 1st round.

Houston is 9-1 in their last 10 and covered the spread in 3 of their last 4.

PASS.

I have never trusted betting totals when it comes to the Cougars. They play great defense which can be deceiving when it comes to the O/U. Oddsmakers play into that when they set the total this low, and I’m not going to buy into it. I’d rather just avoid it and keep my bet to the spread.

Big South Tournament: Longwood vs. UNC-Asheville odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Big South Championship: Longwood vs. UNC-Asheville odds, with college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Longwood Lancers (20-13, 6-10 Big South) battle the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs (22-11, 12-4) on Sunday in the Big South Championship. Tip from Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena is scheduled for noon ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Longwood vs. UNC-Asheville odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Longwood upset top-seeded High Point 80-79 in overtime on Saturday as a 7-point underdog while the Over (149.5) hit. C Szymon Zapala scored 17 points including the go-ahead bucket with 26 seconds left for the 5th-seeded Lancers. It was the 2nd time Longwood beat High Point in the last 7 days, winning the season-finale 74-72 on March 2.

It also took overtime for the 2nd-seeded UNC-Asheville Bulldogs to beat the No. 3 Gardner-Webb Bulldogs 83-72 on Saturday in the other semifinal. The Bulldogs covered as a 4.5-point favorite and the Over (144.5) hit. Senior F Drew Pember had his 2nd triple-double of the season (30 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists). UNC-Asheville held Gardner-Webb to just 1 point in OT.

The teams split their 2 meetings this season with each winning at home. UNC-Asheville won 65-61 on Jan. 13 and Longwood won 80-75 on Feb. 21. Each team covered the spread as the home favorite as well.

Longwood vs. UNC-Asheville picks and predictions

Prediction

UNC-Asheville 74, Longwood 72

Moneyline

PASS.

I’m confident that the Bulldogs (-146) win this game, but I’d rather not buy into all that juice. I’ll save my money for the spread instead.

Against the spread

BET LONGWOOD +2.5 (-106).

These teams have played basically even over their last 10 meetings. They have each covered the spread in 5 of the last 10 matchups.

Longwood has a lot of momentum coming into the championship game, having won and covered 6 of its last 8 games.

UNC-Asheville’s best player is Pember (20.5 points per game), but Longwood has held him in check. He has scored just 17 and 12 points in their 2 meetings. I think they can do it again.

I do not see any advantage either way on this bet. These teams are 5-5 going over the total in the last 10 meetings.

Big South Tournament: Longwood at High Point odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Longwood at High Point Big South Tournament odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Longwood Lancers (19-13) and High Point Panthers (25-7) tangle in the semifinals of the Big South Tournament Saturday. The matinee contest at Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena in High Point, N.C., will tip off at noon ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Longwood vs. High Point odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Longwood easily covered a -1.5 spread in a 69-56 triumph over Winthrop Friday. The 5th-seeded Lancers were a plus-5 on the boards and a plus-7 in turnovers in Friday’s quarterfinal.

High Point — the No. 1 seed in this tournament and the team getting home hardwood — advanced to Saturday’s semifinal by overcoming some 1st-half trouble and eventually defeating No. 9 Radford 77-63 Friday, covering a -10.5.

In their final regular-season game last Saturday, the Panthers lost to Longwood 74-72 as 2½-point favorites. The Big South foes split for the regular season, though; HPU downed the Lancers 93-76 Feb. 1.

Longwood at High Point picks and predictions

Prediction

High Point 81, Longwood 71

Moneyline

This home-floor advantage was hard-earned by a High Point 5 that has suffered at the hands of Longwood over the years. From 2018-23, the Lancers won 11 in a row against the Panthers. The Feb. 1 home win over LU was significant from a confidence standpoint.

HPU is the solid lean as an outright probability Saturday, but going past -250 chips away at value. PASS.

Against the spread

Longwood went 1-7 ATS across 8 conference road games this season. Issues at the defensive end led to an 8-game LU losing streak ATS from Jan. 11-Feb. 7.

The Lancers of late have been getting more from their offense, but up until the last couple games their defense had been on a late-season decline. Look for HPU’s more efficient and consistent offense to come through in a relatively high-scoring game.

Longwood has played back-to-back games away from home 6 times this season: the Lancers are 1-5 ATS in the 2nd game.

BACK THE PANTHERS -6.5 (-120).

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

The O/U is 1-1 in this year’s meetings, 2-2 across the last 4 LU-HPU games, and 3-3 across the last 6.

Ticket this one for a moderate pace but a lot of looks from the foul line.  A total around 150 looks to be likely.

But both teams do excel in pushing opponents into lesser mid-range looks on many possessions. The lean here is very slight, but the total here may be overcooked by just a bit. The UNDER 153.5 (-105) may not be a true value play as listed, but there’s a hint of an edge at least.

March Madness: Longwood vs. Tennessee odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Longwood vs. Tennessee odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 14 Longwood Lancers (26-6) will meet the No. 3 Tennessee Volunteers (26-7) Thursday in a NCAA Tournament South Region game. Tip from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Longwood vs. Tennessee odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Volunteers are riding a 7-game win streak, having won and covered all 3 game en route to the SEC Tournament Championship.

The Vols are 12-1 in their last 13 games, 8-5 against the spread (ATS). Many were shocked Tennessee didn’t get a higher seed with the third-best defense in the nation per Kenpom.

As for the Lancers, they beat Winthrop by 21 in the Sun Belt Tournament final to get to the Big Dance. They’ve won 19 of their last 20.

Longwood ranks top 60 in points per game and opponents’ points per game. While it’s not picked as a popular upset given the Vols’ current surge, the Lancers will be no pushover.

Rankings courtesy of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Longwood vs. Tennessee odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 78, Longwood 62

Money line

PASS.

Betting a -2500 favorite on a 14 vs. 3 game is asking for trouble. Absolutely stay away from the money line for both teams.

Against the spread

LEAN to LONGWOOD +18.5 (-110).

The Lancers haven’t been good the last couple of years, but they have experienced players captaining the ship this season. Four of their top 5 scoring options are upperclassmen.

Tennessee won’t necessarily crush a team with dominating size, but rather with extremely quick and athletic guard play. That should bode well for a smaller school like Longwood, which doesn’t have a player over 6-foot-8.

Longwood has an offense that ranks 110th in adjusted efficiency. It should be good enough to score on the Vols and potentially sneak in with even a backdoor cover.

The Lancers didn’t start the season off strong, but should be able to keep it within 20 against Tennessee.

Over/Under

BET the OVER 132.5 (-110).

There are a lot of reasons to like the Under in this battle, but Longwood is 2-0 O/U in games against Power 5 opponents, having games end with over 170 points against Iowa and Georgetown.

Longwood is 15-13 O/U this season. Tennessee was 4-2 O/U against non-Power 5 opponents before conference play kicked off. It should be able to score at will.
