Spencer Rattler can do a lot of things well, but we can’t say he has a great future in the arts. The New Orleans Saints quarterback was invited to participate at the NFL Rookie Premiere in May, and among other events he tried his turn at painting his new team’s logo from memory. He has a high profile despite being a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft.

“This is embarrassing,” Rattler laughed, holding up a painting that looked more like a muddied star than a black and gold fleur-de-lis. We’re guessing he would do better sketching out the South Carolina Gamecocks’ logo. At least he was a good sport about it, and the gold glitter was an inspired touch. This has been a popular event for rookies in recent years; check out Kendre Miller and Jake Haener’s attempts.

For the first time ever, the NFL collaborated with a local artist on the creation of a Super Bowl logo.

The artist who created our new logo, Tahj Williams, is the queen of her Black Masking Indian tribe in New Orleans, the home of Super Bowl LIX.

This is really cool — the NFL will hold Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome to close out its upcoming 2024 season, and for the first time the league has partnered with a local artist to design the championship game’s unique logo.

And they selected Tahj Williams, Queen of the Golden Eagle Black Masking Indians, as the artist. A specialist in intricate beadwork, Williams created a handmade logo in vibrant colors to represent Super Bowl LIX that recalls the ornate costumes she and her community assemble each year for Mardi Gras, capping off Carnival season. It’s a special design for a special event. And that title game will be here before we know it.

The NFL’s social media team just released a fantastic new video of a group of rookies attempting to draw their team’s logo from memory. This is something they’ve done in the past and it never fails to make us laugh, but this year might have been better than ever.

You’ll recognize some familiar faces as two brand new New Orleans Saints rookies were called upon to give their takes on the classic fleur-de-lis. Kendre Miller’s confused and disappointed face was hilarious as he realized his mistakes in what looked like a swapping of the colors.

Jake Haener called his a “rough draft” and shared his mini-logo that just looks like if you were to try to crumble up the normal Saints logo into a ball. Both probably did just as good as most people trying, however.

Browns encourage fans to vote for their new logo ahead of future rebrand

The Cleveland Browns’ classic helmet logo is set to be replaced in the near future by a canine-centric design, and the team is seeking input from fans as they weigh their options for the re-brand.

The two logos still in contention feature dogs with the Browns’ signature white helmet stripe on their foreheads and spiked collars. One of the pups has exposed teeth and a grey nose to pair with a more pronounced gorget while the other hound has a more jowly look with a jewel-like ornament hanging from its neckwear.

Both options will be appealing to fans who want their team associated with an angry cur rather than the brand identity that has become something of a punchline across the NFL over the years.

Regardless of Cleveland’s decision on their updated emblem, it will be up to the Browns’ highly-talented roster to bring pride and relevance back to the franchise and restore the team’s reputation as a contender in 2023 and beyond.

Here’s what Chiefs’ finished throwback midfield logo, end zone designs look like

A quick look at the #Chiefs’ completed throwback endzone and center logo ahead of Week vs. the #Chargers:

The Kansas City Chiefs were teasing bringing back a throwback midfield logo and end zone design to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Arrowhead Stadium. Well, it wasn’t just a teaser.

The Chiefs officially brought back the red endzone, with the original centerfield logo. The team shared a live stream of the grounds crew finishing the endzone painting just the other day, just in case you happen to enjoy watching paint dry.

Well, now they’ve officially completed the job and man does it look spectacular. Chiefs team reporter Matt McMullen shared a photo from around 2:00 p.m. CT.

The design is inspired by the Chiefs’ endzone and midfield logo look from 1972 when the team played their first games in Arrowhead Stadium. The official team Twitter account shared a comparison shot.

According to the Chiefs’ head groundskeeper Travis Hogan, the team even brought in legendary groundskeeper George Toma, who designed the original red endzone and centerfield logo to help get this design as close to the original as possible.

Saints’ helmet logo ranked among NFL’s best designs

The instant-classic New Orleans Saints’ helmet logo has been ranked among the NFL’s best designs:

It’s tough to find a more iconic helmet than the classic design the New Orleans Saints wear each week, but that isn’t stopping some from trying. And to be fair, there are some really strong looks in this league. In this helmet logos ranking from Christian D’Andrea over at For The Win, the Saints clocked in high — very high, in fact. D’Andrea put New Orleans’ helmet logo above all but two other designs across the NFL, at No. 3 overall, writing of the placement:

“Black and gold is a great combination and the fleur de lis is a lovely nod to New Orleans. Again, simpler is better.”

Can’t fault that logic. The Saints have only made minor tweaks and adjustments to their helmet designs over the years, touching up the linework here and trying out a different shade of gold there. Quality of play aside, their debut look was an instant hit, and it still carries a vintage aesthetic that deserves its place along with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys and other venerable franchises around the league.

So it’ll be interesting to see how this year’s new black alternate helmets are received. It’s already a more complicated design than what fans are used to, beyond the palette swap, including a patterned stripe running down the middle. New Orleans has done well with their throwbacks and “Color Rush” variants before. Maybe this new look hits the ground running, too.

Commanders, NFL disagree on fixing team crest with Super Bowl years

The Commanders wanted to change the crest after receiving criticism from fans. The NFL agreed to the change, but not in the way Washington preferred.

When the Washington Commanders announced their new name, uniforms and logo earlier this month, it was met with criticism. Washington expected the criticism as you can’t make everyone happy.

However, one aspect the majority of fans liked was the logo with the crest displaying the years the franchise won an NFL championship and Super Bowl. There was also an issue with the crest, as it displayed the years Washington had won the Super Bowl on the crest — not the season in which the franchise won the Super Bowl.

The 1991 Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl, which means Washington was NFL champions in 1991 — not 1992 — even though the Super Bowl was played in Jan. 1992. It was an error that Washington should correct.

After the rebranding, Washington president Jason Wright spoke on the topic explaining why the team went with the year the Super Bowl was played. Wright said that’s how it’s listed in the “NFL annals.” Wright said he would listen to fan feedback on the topic and it was something the team could change.

Wright was a man of his word, as he went to the NFL to change the years on the crest to the Roman numerals of the Super Bowls Washington won, per Michael Phillips of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. However, the NFL denied the Commanders’ request.

The league didn’t mind Washington changing the crest to the correct years (1983, 1987 & 1991); however, the team could not use the Roman numerals as the NFL owns copyrights on the Super Bowl games, including the Roman numerals for each game.

Per Phillips, the Commanders will continue to work on tweaking the crest.

The criticism for Washington is warranted, but it’s only fair to credit the team for listening to the fans, something that’s not usually the case.
