Broncos will get a close look at every TE at the Senior Bowl

Broncos quality control coaches Logan Kilgore (National) and Zack Grossi (American) will coach tight ends at the Senior Bowl next week.

If the Denver Broncos plan to target tight ends in the 2024 NFL draft, they should be well-briefed on the TEs who participated in the Senior Bowl.

Sean Payton will have a member of his staff coaching tight ends for each team at the college all-star game in Mobile, Alabama next week. Broncos quality control coach Logan Kilgore will coach TEs for the National team and fellow QC coach Zack Grossi will coach the American team TEs.

The list of TEs set to participate in this year’s Senior Bowl includes PSU’s Theo Johnson, Minnesota’s Brevyn Spann-Ford, Michigan’s AJ Barner, Kansas State’s Ben Sinnott, FSU’s Jaheim Bell, Arizona’s Tanner McLachlan and TCU’s Jared Wiley.

Denver tight end Greg Dulcich is coming off another disappointing season in which he missed 15 games due to injury. Adam Trautman, who served as the team’s No. 1 TE in 2024, is scheduled to become a free agent in March.

The Broncos currently own six picks for April’s draft. Senior Bowl participants will begin practicing next week ahead of the all-star game set to be played on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Broncos CQ coach Logan Kilgore to coach TEs at Senior Bowl

Broncos quality control coach Logan Kilgore will coach tight ends for the National team at the Senior Bowl later this month.

Davis Webb isn’t the only member of Sean Payton’s coaching staff set to coach at a college football all-star game this winter.

Denver Broncos quality control coach Logan Kilgore will coach tight ends for the National team at the Senior Bowl later this month.

Meanwhile, Webb — Denver’s quarterbacks coach — is set to serve as the offensive coordinator for the West team at the East-West Shrine Bowl.

Kilgore, 33, was a backup quarterback with the New Orleans Saints under Payton in 2014. He went on to spend four seasons in the Canadian Football League from 2015-2019. Kilgore transitioned to coaching in 2021, joining Arkansas State as an offensive assistant.

After one year at the college level, Kilgore served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for Isidore Newman in 2022, helping Arch Manning break high school records that were previously held by his uncles, Peyton and Eli.

Kilgore planned to return to Arkansas State as a tight ends coach in 2023 before Payton asked him to join his staff in Denver. Kilgore joined the Broncos as a quality control coach last March. Now entering his second year in Denver, Kilgore will gain valuable experience and get a close look at TEs in this year’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama from Jan. 30-Feb. 3.

QB-turned-coach Favian Upshaw gets first NFL opportunity with Broncos

Favian Upshaw, a former Georgia Southern QB, is joining the Broncos’ coaching staff after six years at the college and high school levels.

Favian Upshaw was a dual-threat co-starting quarterback at Georgia Southern from 2014-2016, helping the Eagles reach their first-ever bowl game in 2015. Upshaw rushed 12 times for 199 yards and four touchdowns in Georgia Southern’s 58-27 win over Bowling Green in the GoDaddy Bowl that season.

Upshaw finished his college career with 1,295 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground with 1,126 passing yards with six more scores through the air in 32 games.

After graduating from Georgia Southern with a degree in sport management in 2016, Upshaw got his start in coaching as a co-offensive coordinator with Astronaut High School in 2017. After that, Upshaw served as a graduate assistant for Tulane from 2018-19 while earning his master’s degree in liberal arts.

Upshaw then coached quarterbacks at Savannah State in 2020 before returning to his alma mater, Georgia Southern, as running backs coach in 2021. He returned to Tulane as an offensive analyst in 2022, marking his sixth year of coaching at a college or high school level.

Upshaw will not get his first coaching opportunity in the NFL after being hired by Sean Payton to serve as an offensive quality control coach with the Denver Broncos this season. He will work alongside fellow OCQ coach Logan Kilgore, a former QB who coached Arch Manning in high school.

Quality control work is not a glamorous job in the NFL, but it is a starting point for coaching at the highest level. The list of coaches who started as quality control assistants before later going on to become head coaches includes Jon Gruden, Ron Rivera and Robert Saleh.

Upshaw and Kilgore are now getting their first opportunities to coach in the NFL on Payton’s new staff in Denver.

Broncos expected to hire Arch Manning’s offensive coordinator

The Broncos are expected to hire Logan Kilgore as an offensive quality control coach. The ex-Saints QB coached Arch Manning last fall.

Sean Payton continues to get the band back together as he builds a new coaching staff with the Denver Broncos.

Payton is expected to hire former New Orleans Saints training camp quarterback Logan Kilgore as an offensive quality control coach, according to a report from FootballScoop.com’s Zach Barnett.

Kilgore, 32, signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee in 2014. After failing to make the Saints’ 53-man roster, Kilgore went to Canada and spent time with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos from 2015-2019.

Kilgore got his start in coaching as an offensive analyst with Arkansas State in 2021. After that, he served as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for Isidore Newman in 2022, helping Arch Manning break high school records that were previously held by his uncles, Peyton and Eli.

After Manning’s senior season, Kilgore returned to Arkansas State as a tight ends coach last December, but he is now expected to leave the school for a chance to coach in the NFL with the Broncos.

Kilgore will become the second former New Orleans player to join Payton’s staff in Denver, joining new offensive line coach Zach Strief. We are tracking all of the Broncos’ coaching changes on this page.
