Chiefs rookie DE Mike Danna placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

Another player goes on the reserve/COVID-19 list for the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs added a player to the reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs placed rookie DE Mike Danna on the reserve/COVID-19 list. If you’ll recall, players that are placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list do not have to test positive for the virus, they can simply be deemed high-risk close contacts to someone who tested positive. If Danna is a high-risk close contact, he has to spend five days on the list without a positive test before he’s able to be removed from the list.

Chiefs strength and conditioning coach Barry Rubin reportedly tested positive for the COVID-19 just yesterday. It’s possible that Danna was deemed a high-risk close contact with Rubin. It’s also possible that this is an entirely separate instance as COVID-19 cases continue to surge across the country.

Danna played in the Chiefs’ Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. He’s considered the No. 2 right defensive end on the Chiefs’ depth chart. His absence would leave the Chiefs with Frank Clark, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Alex Okafor and Tim Ward at the defensive end position.

Thankfully, the Chiefs don’t play a game this week and have ample time leading up to the divisional round to get Danna back. He’s been one of the standout rookie defenders on the team, recording 25 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks, four tackles for loss and six quarterback hits in 13 games played this season.

Chiefs LB Anthony Hitchens indicates he has returned from reserve/COVID-19 list

The Chiefs’ defensive signal-caller says he’s back in the building after a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting a boost to their defense before they return to practice this week.

Chiefs LB Anthony Hitchens posted on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, indicating that he’s back in the building after nearly a full two-week absence. Kansas City placed Hitchens on the reserve/COVID-19 list back on December 22. This was believed to be a result of a high-risk close contact, but his extended stay suggests that he could have contracted the virus.

Hitchens, who is the Chiefs’ defensive signal-caller, missed the final two games of the regular season. This forced Ben Niemann and Darius Harris to wear the green dot in his absence, getting the calls from the sideline and relaying those to the rest of the defense.

In 14 starts this season, Hitchens has 78 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, and a pass breakup. He still finished the year second on the team in total tackles, despite missing those final two games.  Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke about his season back in early December, describing him as the “glue guy” on the defense.

“To me, he’s the glue,” Spagnuolo said of Hitchens. “You don’t have the luxury of seeing the guys like I do and seeing the interaction and the little things that he does. I showed one this morning from yesterday’s practice—I actually made the point that we all should feel fortunate that we have Hitch as a MIKE linebacker because he does a lot of things before the ball is snapped and he helps everybody else play better. I’m sure glad we got him; I think he’s playing some really good football. He always has played aggressive, he always has tackled physically, and I think he brings that to the game. I think all of us, I’m talking about players and coaches, appreciate what he does.”

The team appreciation for Hitchens has likely grown fonder in his absence. His return to action will be a big boost for a defense that is looking to make a statement during the playoffs.

The Chiefs return to practice on Thursday as they prepare for potential opponents in the divisional round. Expect an official transaction, returning Hitchens from the reserve/COVID-19 list to happen either later today or tomorrow.

Saints vs. Falcons inactive list: CB Patrick Robinson will play in Week 13

The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints reported their inactive lists for Week 13’s rematch at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints reported their inactive lists for Week 13’s rematch at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, though the Saints ruled out multiple players preemptively because of injuries (starting cornerback Janoris Jenkins and defensive end Marcus Davenport among them). The big name to note here is returns specialist Deonte Harris, who won’t be playing. He’s likely to be replaced by practice squad call-up Tommylee Lewis.

And the good news is that backup corner Patrick Robinson is active after a hamstring injury limited him in Friday’s final practice session. The Saints promoted practice squad cornerback Grant Haley in case Robinson couldn’t go, but his body responded well in pregame warmups, so he’ll be replacing Jenkins in the starting lineup.

Atlanta will be without starting guard James Carpenter while he manages a groin muscle issue, but they are returning both wide receiver Julio Jones and running back Todd Gurley, who were each questionable to play on the injury report. Here’s who won’t be suiting up:

Chiefs activate OL Martinas Rankin from reserve/COVID-19 list

The Chiefs no longer have any players on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Kansas City Chiefs have activated the final player they had on the reserve/COVID-19 list to the 53-man roster.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have activated OL Martinas Rankin from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Rankin was placed on the list ahead of Week 11 along with LT Eric Fisher and RT Mitchell Schwartz. Both Fisher and Schwartz were activated on Thursday, while Rankin remained on the list. With Mecole Hardman also coming off of the list on Saturday, the team no longer has any players currently on the list.

Rankin had recently been activated from the PUP list after recovering from a season-ending knee injury suffered in the middle of the 2019 season. The versatile offensive lineman started five games at left guard for the Chiefs in 2019. He is currently listed as the backup left tackle on the depth chart for Kansas City.

With Mitchell Schwartz set to be out for at least another three weeks now that he’s been placed on injured reserve, the team is lacking for offensive tackle depth. That makes this a timely move for the Chiefs as they prepare to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 12.

The Chiefs received a roster exemption for Rankin until Tuesday, November 24th. The team will need to make a corresponding transaction to clear space on the roster when that roster exemption expires.

The New Orleans Saints will be without top cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who is officially inactive for Week 11’s matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. His teammates Josh Hill and Dwayne Washington were each preemptively ruled out on the injury report while recovering from a concussion and back issue, respectively.

One player who was able to suit up is wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith, who was concussed by a dirty hit in last week’s game with the San Francisco 49ers. It’s great to see Smith bounce back from what looked like a serious injury.

Here’s who will be on the sidelines on each team’s inactive list:

From the Saints

  • TE Josh Hill (concussion)
  • RB Dwayne Washington (back)
  • CB Marshon Lattimore (abdomen)
  • LB Chase Hansen
  • OT Derrick Kelly
  • DT Malcolm Roach

From the Falcons

  • QB Kurt Benkert
  • RB Qadree Ollison
  • DB Tyler Hall
  • OT John Wetzel
  • DT Deadrin Senat

Why Wisconsin wins, or why Wisconsin loses tomorrow at Northwestern

The 2-0 and No. 10-ranked Wisconsin Badgers will take the field for the third time this season tomorrow against the 4-0 and No. 19-ranked Northwestern Wildcats.

Wisconsin vs. Northwestern matchups always seem to be close ones, but I don’t think anybody predicted that this year’s contest would be between two undefeated teams and would in essence decide who wins the Big Ten West.

Related: Here’s who could return to action for the Badgers this weekend

This week I’ve gone through five keys to a Wisconsin victory, previewed the 2020 Northwestern team, gave five players to watch in the contest and looked at what the Wildcats were saying about Wisconsin football.

Here, now, is why Wisconsin wins tomorrow at Northwestern and why Wisconsin loses:

Kansas City Chiefs place 3 offensive linemen on reserve/COVID-19 list

Two starting offensive tackles and a backup have been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list for the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed three offensive linemen on the reserve/COVID-19 including two starters.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have placed starting LT Eric Fisher and starting RT Mitchell Schwartz on the reserve/COVID-19 list. In addition to the two starters, the Chiefs placed recently-activated swing OL Martinas Rankin on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Chiefs activate FB Anthony Sherman from reserve/COVID-19 list

The Sausage is back after a multi-week stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Kansas City Chiefs have activated FB Anthony Sherman from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Andy Reid announced earlier today that Sherman would return to practice, but the NFL’s transaction report made it official. Sherman has been removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list. This might not seem like a big move, but Sherman is one of the longest-tenured players on the roster and a team leader.

Sheman was first placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list following the team’s Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Reports claim that Shermann didn’t contract COVID-19 at the time he was placed on the list, but did have close contact with an individual who tested positive for the novel virus.

In all Sherman missed three games, but was still present for virtual team meetings. Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy often referred to him as “Coach Sherman” during his absence, as he was tasked with getting Le’Veon Bell up to speed with the playbook and terminology in Kansas City.

While Sherman was absent, the Chiefs relied on Travis Kelce to fill as a blocker on certain plays on the offense. Additionally, they relied on a variety of players to pick up the slack on special teams to play in his absence.

No corresponding moves are needed for Sherman’s activation. Kansas City had a free roster spot due to yesterday’s trade sending RB DeAndre Washington to the Miami Dolphins.
