Rutgers women’s basketball falls to Maryland

Rutgers women’s basketball played well despite losing to Maryland.

After starting February with a win, Rutgers women’s basketball could not continue their success on Tuesday night. The Scarlet Knights welcomed Maryland to Jersey Mike’s Arena and struggled offensively in a 67-59 loss.

Maryland took control of this game early on as they outscored Rutgers by 13 points through three quarters. They were led by Shyanne Sellers, who scored a team-high 16 points. She got help from Bri McDaniel, who scored 14 points, and Jake-Brown Turner, who chipped in 11.

Although Rutgers continued to struggle against Big Ten teams, Destiny Adams had another big game. The New Jersey native scored 22 points and hauled in eight rebounds. The only other Scarlet Knight to score double digits was Lisa Thompson.

After falling behind early, Rutgers struggled to take care of the ball. Maryland forced 22 turnovers, which led to 21 points. That allowed the Terrapins to build a lead they would never relinquish.

Additionally, Maryland was dealing from the free throw lining, shooting 67.9 percent. Rutgers only shot 55.6 and were unable to take advantage of their opportunities.

As Rutgers looks to put this game in the rearview mirror, their focus will shift to Michigan. They are set to take on the Wolverines this Saturday in Ann Harbor. While Michigan will be favored in that matchup, Rutgers will be looking to play the role of spoiler.

Rutgers women’s basketball falls to Northwestern

Rutgers women’s basketball loses narrowly to Northwestern.

On Saturday, Rutgers women’s basketball lost its 2023 finale to Northwestern 77-70 at Welsh Ryan Arena. After a dominating first quarter, the Scarlet Knights were unable to build on their momentum and collapsed in the fourth quarter.

In their first matchup of the season against the Wildcats, Rutgers had no answer for Calleigh Warren. The New Jersey native scored 22 points and added two rebounds to her resume. Warren also had some help in the form of Melanie Daley, who put 20 points on the board.

For Rutgers, Lisa Thompson led the way offensively with 17 points. Kassondra Brown also had a big night, scoring 17 points. It was the fifth straight game in which the Abington native scored double digits.

Additionally, Rutgers was unable to take care of the basketball in their third straight loss. The Scarlet Knights committed 19 turnovers, which resulted in 24 points. They also made it hard to gain momentum by committing 19 fouls.

While Saturday did not go as planned for Rutgers, they nearly recorded their seventh win of the season. However, they were unable to contain Northwestern’s offense in the fourth quarter, in which they scored 21 points and held Rutgers to eight.

After a few days off, Rutgers will return to action on Tuesday against Purdue. Their matchup with the Boilermakers will provide a perfect opportunity for Rutgers to climb in the Big Ten standings.

Rutgers basketball adds four-star recruit Lisa Thompson

Rutgers women’s basketball has added four-star Lisa Thompson.

On Wednesday, the future for Rutgers basketball got brighter with the addition of Lisa Thompson.

The Illinois native is a four-star recruit and No. 60-ranked prospect in the 2023 class, according to ESPNW. She brings an impressive resume to Rutgers.

Thompson was a two-time Herald News Player of the Year in high school and an Illinois All-State honoree. She also led her team to the 2023 Independent National Championship. Regardless of how the roster changed, Thompson’s teams have always made deep playoff runs partly due to her impact offensively.

During her high school career, Thompson averaged double-digit points all four years. As a junior, she averaged 23 points a year. The talented point guard made an impact on both ends of the court with over five steals per game last year.

Due to her impressive play, Thompson earned national honors during her junior year. She was named a McDonald’s All-American Nominee and received an invite to the USA Women’s U17 World Cup Team Trials.

Thompson is an excellent addition as the Scarlet Knights continue to build their program. She will provide a boost at both ends of the court as she continues to grow her game. When speaking with the media, Coquese Washington, the current head coach for Rutgers basketball, did not hide her excitement for her new point guard.

” We are truly fortunate to add a player like Lisa Thompson to our roster,” Washington said in a statement. “Lisa is one of the most athletically gifted players in the entire 2023 class. She has an impressive vertical jump and really gets after it on the defensive end. She also scores the ball in droves, especially on slashing attacks to the basket. She is definitely going to add lots of spice to our transition attack.”

While the start of the season is still months away, Rutgers fans can already start preparing for what should be an exciting season.
