Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Tampa Bay Lightning meet the Carolina Hurricanes at Lenovo Center in Raleigh on Friday to open their 2024-25 seasons. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+/hulu). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Lightning vs. Hurricanes odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Lightning won 2-1 in 2023-24

The Lighting flew out on Monday from Tampa to leave ahead of Hurricane Milton. The storm struck the Central Florida area, and Saturday’s home opener against the Hurricanes has been postponed to a later date.

The only meeting in Raleigh last season resulted in an 8-2 victory by the Lightning on Nov. 24, 2023. Tampa Bay has won the past 2 trips to Raleigh by a combined 12-2 score, and the underdog has won 4 of the past 6 in the series.

The Lightning lost captain Steven Stamkos to the Nashville Predators, who also saw D Mikhail Sergachev moved to the Utah Hockey Club. The team was able to add F Jake Guentzel in a sign-and-trade with the Hurricanes, and he is likely to get a chilly reception in Raleigh as a result. D Ryan McDonagh will try to fill Sergachev’s shoes.

The Canes lost a lot of talent, with F Teuvo Teravainen departing for Chicago, while Ds Brett Pesce and Brady Skjei also left in free agency. The team added gritty F Jack Roslovic, as well as Ds Shayne Gostisbehere and Sean Walker to fill some voids on the blueline.

Lightning at Hurricanes projected goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (30-20-2, 2.90 GAA, .900 SV%, 2 SO in 2023-24) vs. Fredrik Andersen (13-2-0, 1.84 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO in 2023-24) vs.

Vasilevskiy made his season debut in Raleigh last season on Nov. 24 after missing time due to a microdiscectomy because of a lumbar disc herniation in his back. He kicked aside 22 of the 24 shots he faced in his only appearance against Carolina, while the offense provided him with 8 goals of support in an easy win.

Andersen missed 4 months last season due to a blood clotting issue. When he was in the lineup, he was one of the best goaltenders in the NHL, posting a 1.84 GAA. He allowed 3 or fewer goals in 15 of his 16 starts, and 2 or fewer goals in 13 of those outings. Andersen didn’t face Tampa Bay in 2023-24.

Lightning at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Lightning 2

Moneyline

The HURRICANES (-135) are a safe play in this clash against the rival Lightning (+115) in the home opener.

Carolina usually performs well in these regular-season openers, enjoying a little home cooking before hitting the road for an extended road trip during the North Carolina State Fair, which takes up the parking lot at the newly renamed Lenovo Center.

You can’t blame the Lightning for a little bit of a lack of focus following the storm, as their minds could be elsewhere.

Puck line/Against the spread

If you’re a little more adventurous, HURRICANES -1.5 (+180) is worth a play for the chance to nearly double up.

The road team has been much better in this series lately, but Carolina is a strong play at home behind Andersen, as it should be much more focused than the Lightning +1.5 (-225).

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-120) is the lean in this opener for both sides.

While the Over cashed in the only meeting last season in Raleigh, the Under is 3-1-1 in the previous 5 meetings, and 3-1-1 in the past 5 skates in North Carolina, too.

Lightning at Hurricanes projected goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (31-20-4, 2.69 GAA, .914 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (19-8-1, 2.45 GAA, .904 SV%, 1 SO)

Vasilevskiy allowed just 2 goals on 34 shots last time out in Boston on Saturday, but he was unable to halt a 3-game personal losing streak. He is now 3-5-2 with a 3.28 GAA and .889 SV% in 10 starts in March.

Vassy is also 0-1-1 with a 4.34 GAA and .903 SV% in 2 starts vs. Carolina this season and is just 13-13-0 with a 2.73 GAA and .913 SV% in 26 road starts.

Andersen allowed 3 goals on 38 shots in a 4-3 shootout loss against the Bruins Sunday. He has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 3 straight outings and 10 of his last 11 starts.

Andersen has managed a 2-0-0 record, 1.44 GAA and .925 SV% with a shutout against the Lightning in 2 starts this season.

Lightning at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Lightning 2

Moneyline

The HURRICANES (-140) are the play on home ice, mostly due to their dominance against the Lightning this season and Tampa’s recent play.

The Lightning have dropped 4 games in a row and are 2-6 in the past 8 games on the road. Tampa Bay is also just 2-8 in the previous 10 tries against teams with a winning overall record.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Lightning +1.5 (-210) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return if you would like a little insurance on them in the loss. While the Hurricanes -1.5 (+160) would be the better alternative, they are just 1-3 in the past 4 games as a favorite.

It’s best just to PASS.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (+112) is the best value.

The Lightning have scored just 7 goals across their last 4 games despite that they have seen a lot of Over results recently. The Under is also 4-0-1 in Tampa’s past 5 trips to Raleigh and is 14-4-2 in the past 20 meetings overall in this series.

The Under is 7-3-1 in the past 11 games on home ice for the Hurricanes, too.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks, and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (39-16-6) travel to meet the Carolina Hurricanes (41-15-6) at PNC Arena Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Lightning vs. Hurricanes odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Lightning were felled 2-1 at home by the New York Rangers Saturday. That snapped a two-game win streak. The Under has connected in five consecutive outings for Tampa Bay.

The Hurricanes won the only previous meeting of these two clubs this season when they took a 2-1 decision in overtime Nov. 9. Like Tampa Bay, Carolina lost its most recent game to the Rangers when they fell 2-0 in Raleigh Sunday.

Lightning at Hurricanes odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:45 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Lightning -103 (bet $103 to win $100) | Hurricanes -117 (bet $117 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Lightning +1.5 (-250) | Hurricanes -1.5 (+180)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -120 | U: -105)

Lightning at Hurricanes projected goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (32-12-4, 2.36 GAA, .919 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (30-10-2, 2.06 GAA, .928 SV%, 3 SO)

Vasilevskiy has allowed a total of 4 goals on 88 shots across his previous three outings, winning two of the starts. He stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced in that Nov. 9 loss at home to Carolina in OT.

Andersen has dropped three of his four outings in March, although it’s mostly due to a lack of offensive support. Carolina hopes to have helped the offense with the acquisition of LW Max Domi Monday. Andersen is 1-3-0 with a 2.29 GAA and .910 SV% in four March outings.

Lightning at Hurricanes odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Lightning 2

Money line

The HURRICANES (-117) are at home looking to get back on track, and it’s never easy trying to push past the Lightning. These teams are rather evenly matched, however, with the Hurricanes winning three of the past seven meetings.

Against the spread

The Lightning +1.5 (-250) will cost you two and a half times your potential return, and that’s risky business despite the fact the road team is 6-1 in the past seven meetings between these two teams. Six of the last nine meetings have been decided by 1 goal, too. However, stick with the money line and AVOID the puck line.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (-105) is the lean.

The Carolina offense has been flagging lately, and facing Vasilevskiy is certainly not going to be a cure for its ills. The Under is 7-1 in the past eight meetings in this series, too. Look for plenty of defense, and a lot of flashy saves.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes Game 2 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes Game 2 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes play Game 2 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs second-round series Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at PNC Arena. Below, we analyze the Lightning-Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Lightning struck for a 2-1 victory in the series opener Sunday afternoon. Andrei Vasilevskiy was the difference turning aside 37 of the 38 shots he faced, as he was just a little more crisp than rookie Alex Nedeljkovic in the crease for Carolina.

The Hurricanes were tied 1-1 early in the third period when Jake Bean struck on the power play for his first-career playoff goal. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Bean cannot be the team’s only scorer as the other weapons need to produce if the Hurricanes are to win.

Lightning at Hurricanes: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:40 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Lightning -110 (bet $110 to win $100) | Hurricanes -110 (bet $110 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Lightning +1.5 (-275) | Hurricanes -1.5 (+225)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Lightning at Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (31-10-1, 2.21 GAA, .925 SV%, 5 SO) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (15-5-3, 1.90 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO)

Vasilevskiy allowed just the Bean power-play goal as he really stood on his head and was tremendous in the series opener. He is 2-0 in playoff series openers this season, and he won Game 2 in Florida last round, too.

Nedeljkovic and the Hurricanes lost for the first time in four playoff home games, although they were certainly not outplayed. Unfortunately for the rookie, he is now 2-3 in one-goal games in the playoffs so far.

Lightning at Hurricanes: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 3, Hurricanes 2

Money line (ML)

The LIGHTNING (-110) have plenty of offense, but the goaltending situation and the experience are the biggest differences in this series. The Hurricanes (-110) are an uber-talented team that did big things in the regular season. This organization continues to trend up and will be a championship contender for years to come, but their time is not now.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Lightning +1.5 (-275) will cost you almost three times your potential return, and that’s just not a recommended play.

AVOID and focus on the money line instead.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-110) is the play in Game 2. Vasilevskiy shut down the Hurricanes offense, and Ned did a good job keeping the big dogs for the Lightning at bay. Don’t be surprised if this one is a 2-2 game heading to overtime. If that occurs, enjoy the great hockey, whomever wins, and enjoy the winning ticket, too.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes Game 1 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes Game 1 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes play Game 1 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs second-round series Sunday. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET at PNC Arena. Below, we analyze the Lightning-Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Lightning pushed past their in-state rivals, the Florida Panthers, in six games. Now, they travel to Raleigh, N.C., where they were 1-2-1 in four games at PNC Arena in the regular season.

The Hurricanes edged the Nashville Predators in six games, with the previous four outings going to overtime or double-overtime.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Lightning +1.5 (-275) | Hurricanes -1.5 (+220)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Lightning at Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (31-10-1, 2.21 GAA, .925 SV%, 5 SO) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (15-5-3, 1.90 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO)

Vasilevskiy was great overall, but he can be beaten on the road. He was just 13-8-1 with a 2.63 GAA and .916 SV% in 22 road starts. He went 3-3-1 with a 2.14 GAA and .933 SV% with one shutout against the Hurricanes in seven regular-season starts.

Nedeljkovic posted four wins in six games in his first-career postseason series against the Predators. He went 7-1-2 with a 1.76 GAA and .934 SV% with two shutouts in 10 regular-season starts at PNC Arena. The rookie was also 2-1-0 with a 1.02 GAA and .962 SV% with one shutout against Tampa Bay.

Lightning at Hurricanes: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 4, Hurricanes 2

Money line (ML)

The LIGHTNING (-110) are the defending champs with a Vezina-caliber backstop in the crease, while the Hurricanes have a rookie goaltender in net. We saw how that worked out for the New York Islanders in Game 1 of their series with the Boston Bruins as G Ilya Sorokin crumbled.

Still, Carolina is at home and it will have its raucous crowd’s support. So, it won’t be easy for Tampa. Still, the lean is with the champs.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Lightning +1.5 (-275) are not worth playing here as it will cost you nearly three times your potential return.

AVOID and just look to the money line instead.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total line of 6 (Over +100 | Under -120) will likely come in right on the number, so I don’t like it. However, if there is a lean here, I’d go with the alternate line of OVER 5.5 (-125) as I can see plenty of goals being scored in this opening game as the teams feel each other out early.
