Tigers hire linebackers coach from Hugh Freeze’s Liberty staff

Aldridge served as Liberty’s interim HC after Freeze left at the end of the regular season.

It may be national signing day, but that doesn’t mean that Auburn is only adding players to the team.

Coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] is still putting together his staff on the Plains, and it looks as if he’s added one more member. Nathan King of 247Sports reported on Wednesday that the Tigers are adding coach Josh Aldridge as the team’s linebackers coach, who will come to Auburn from Freeze’s liberty staff.

Aldridge served as Liberty’s interim head coach for the Boca Raton Bowl when Freeze left for Auburn, overseeing a losing effort against Toledo 21-19. He served in a few different places, first coaching the defensive line from 2019-21 before serving as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the team during the fall season. While defensive coordinator duties

will fall to the newly-hired Ron Roberts, Aldridge will once again be by Freeze’s side in the linebackers coach position he’d been overseeing at Liberty in 2022.

Liberty vs Toledo RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl 5 Things To Know

RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Liberty is in a transitional phase. It ended the regular season with a thud after starting 8-1, losing its last three games including an embarrassing 49-14 home whacking from New Mexico State.

Head coach Hugh Freeze bolted for Auburn, and now the program is waiting to get the former Coastal Carolina head man Jamey Chadwell’s era going. Josh Aldridge will be the interim head coach, there are plenty of great parts in place, and there’s still firepower.

Toledo wasn’t perfect, it had a whole lot of turnover problems, and it struggled late in the regular season as it limped into the MAC Championship. One terrific defensive performance against Ohio later in a 17-7 win, and head coach Jason Candle has his second conference title in six season. Now …

He and Toledo need to win a bowl game. Candle stepped in as an interim head man in the 2015 Boca Raton Bowl, and Toledo pulled off the 32-17 win over Temple. That’s been it for the bowl fun going 0-4 since then including a 31-24 Bahamas loss to Middle Tennessee last year. The team was able to keep it close in three of the losses, but that’s not enough – winning this matters.

Liberty has been perfect in the bowls. Hugh Freeze took the Flames to three straight bowls and it won all three, with last year’s LendingTree 56-20 win over Eastern Michigan the most dominant of the group. Again, this season’s bowl version is going through some changes, but the program knows how to get up for these.

If nothing else, the Boca Raton bowls have put on some great offensive shows. They haven’t been all that close – none of the eight were decided by fewer than 15 points – but the winning side hung up 50 points or more four times and 32 or more in the other four.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Liberty Will Win The RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl

The pass rush continues to be devastating.

The offense might have slipped late, and the team completely lost its focus, but it’s still bringing one of the nation’s most dangerous defensive fronts that leads the nation in tackles for loss and is fourth in sacks. That’s a huge problem for Toledo.

The Rocket offensive line isn’t awful in pass protection, but it allows close to seven tackles for loss per game. That’s a concern, and the bigger one is a case of the turnovers that almost crushed the end of the regular season.

Toledo didn’t turn it over in the MAC Championship win over Ohio, but before that it gave it away 16 times in the previous five games.

That’s all fine, but what’s the problem with Liberty? There were a whole lot of injures, but the passing game still managed to finish with 200 yards or more in ever game but a win over Akron, the rushing attack is good enough to get to 200, and …

Why Toledo Will Win The RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl

Liberty has bigger turnover problems than Toledo.

The Rocket miscues came in a late flurry, but Liberty has cranked out a steady stream of screwups with two or more in nine of the 12 games. They haven’t always been lethal – the mistakes are baked into the cake – but the defense doesn’t come up with a ton of takeaways.

At the very least, Toledo probably won’t get hurt if it starts giving the ball away, especially if its secondary can come up with its usual pick or two.

Offensively, the Rockets need to run well. They have a good group to work into the rotation, QB Dequan Finn is dangerous no matter what he does, and the team is 5-0 when running for 225 yards or more.

What was Liberty’s biggest problem over the rough last stretch? The run defense went bye-bye – allowing almost 600 yards and 11 touchdowns in the last three games.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

It’s not like the Hokies are getting wiped out.

They’re losing – seven in a row after starting the season 2-1 – but they were in most of the games with four of the losses by six points or fewer.

They’re failing to come up with the big plays at the right times to push through, but the defensive front hasn’t been bad against the run and the offense is getting its chances.

The Hokies haven’t allowed more than 28 points in over a month, and now they need a few breaks. That’s a problem because …

Bowl Projections

Why Liberty Will Win

The Hokies don’t create their own breaks.

They’ve managed just seven takeaways on the year with a mere four over the last eight games. The offense isn’t good at going on long drives, third down conversions are a struggle, and the team isn’t able to control the time of possession battle to settle everything down.

Liberty turns it over a lot, but it takes it away a ton, too – it cleans up its messes. It’s got the defensive front to be disruptive and force mistakes, the pass rush should dominate the Hokies offensive front, and the secondary should have a decent day.

Virginia Tech is 0-8 when it fails to complete 64% of its passes. Only UConn and UAB were able to hit that mark against the Liberty defense.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia Tech will struggle to consistently score, but it’ll hang around in this just enough to make it interesting into the fourth quarter.

Liberty’s defense will clamp down in the fourth quarter, the running game will take over when it has to, and the loss to UConn last week will be put in the rearview mirror.

Liberty’s Darius McGee defies logic, nets ridiculous 3-pointer with defender draped all over him

What a bucket!

Well, if you can’t get a clear shot to the hoop, you can always use your opponent to help set up the bucket. That’s exactly what Liberty’s Darius McGee did Monday night against North Carolina Central to notch a trey to widen the Flames’ lead on the Eagles.

On the play, McGee drove the basketball through North Carolina Central’s tight defense, but couldn’t find an open space to get his shot off. While being covered by an Eagles defender, McGee decided to leverage against his defender and crank out the 3-pointer anyway.

It’s as good a shot as you’ll see of someone who has no business making a bucket from beyond the arc while being defended.

If you’re going to make a contested shot, you might as well do it in style. McGee has to be proud that this one went in, and the Flames fans sure enjoyed it.

Liberty vs UConn Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

The passing game continues to be steady.

It might not be all that explosive, and it might not be consistent, but it’s going to come up with at least 220 yards getting out of the locker room. Against the UConn secondary, it’s should be able to connect for at least 65% of its throws and keep everything moving.

The run defense has been a rock. It held Arkansas to 144 yards in the 21-19 win, it hasn’t allowed more than 150 yards in any of the last seven games, and UConn can’t win if it doesn’t control the game on the ground.

But …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why UConn Will Win

Liberty plays to the level of its competition.

It rose up and rocked against BYU and Arkansas, and it struggled against Gardner-Webb and – for a wee bit – against UMass and Akron.

UConn might not have cranked up the offense against UMass, but it came up with the 27-10 win, it’s been able to win four of the last five  – including against Fresno State – by generating 14 takeaways during the stretch, and Liberty has had its turnover issues at times this season.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Liberty is weird.

It might be 8-1, and it might be pulling off big wins, but it turns it over way too much, the offensive line isn’t that great, and it keeps on rolling.

UConn is 4-1 at home and 1-4 on the road, but it’ll give up just enough through the air to come up short.

Notre Dame bowl projections following domination of Clemson

What is more important in regards to Notre Dame’s ultimate bowl destination: opponent, location, winnability, or other?

Unless you’re living under a bridge in a far-off land, you’re aware Notre Dame kicked the living daylights out of previously unbeaten Clemson last week and moved to 6-3 on the year.  The Irish officially became bowl eligible with the victory and we scoured the internet to find where the experts see Notre Dame heading this winter.

As a Notre Dame fan (which we assume you are since you’re at Fighting Irish Wire), do you have a preference on where the Irish head?  Does it not matter to you as long as it’s warm?  A big-name opponent?  A cool city?  A winnable game?

If it’s not the College Football Playoff then most people have their desires for a bowl appearance that has to do with one of the above.  Here is where the 12 outlets we found have Notre Dame heading this postseason.  Comment below with which you would prefer or would most like to avoid.

The Irish are ranked once again

The college football world saw Notre Dame take it to former No. 5 Clemson and it reflected in the latest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll. Just a week after getting votes after upsetting Syracuse, the Irish made it back-to-back wins over ranked opponents to make their way back into the poll.

There was plenty of movement along the top 25 as well, with multiple teams making moves up and down after a wild weekend of college football. Find out below the latest Coaches Poll rankings with last weeks rank in parenthesis.

Arkansas vs Liberty Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

This continues to be the goldfish team – it gets as big as its bowl. (Okay, so that goldfish thing is actually a myth, but work with me.)

It plays Gardner-Webb, it struggles. It plays Akron, it struggles. It plays Wake Forest, it almost pulls off a thriller. It plays BYU last week, and one 41-14 win later the team is 7-1 and rolling right along.

The offense has been inconsistent – it came up with its best performance of the year last week with the ground game ripping off 300 yards – but the defense has been amazing on third downs, the pass rush is incredible, and this group has the ability to take the ball away in bunches.

It also has the ability to rise to the moment as the underdog team with nothing to lose, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Arkansas Will Win

Arkansas is a whole different rushing animal.

The defense might be in for a rough day against the Flames – it has rough days against everyone – but the consistent offense with the second-best ground game in the SEC is tearing off yards in chunks.

It has to rely on the offensive line right away against a Liberty defensive front that held up against BYU and solved the problems against the run. It started out with two rough outings against Southern Miss and UAB, got stronger, and it should be okay, but the Hogs can throw, too.

Arkansas beat BYU the week before Liberty did, with KJ Jefferson throwing at will and the running game averaging 6.6 yards per carry.

The balanced attack should be enough, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Hogs force takeaways? They’re 3-0 when forcing multiple turnovers but only came up with a total of one in the other five games.

Liberty will give it up a few times because that’s what it does. It’ll hang around and make this a tough fight – the defensive front will be okay – but Jefferson will hit his throws in the second half to ease the tension.

Notre Dame back to getting votes in latest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll

The Irish aren’t far from being ranked again

The Irish got one of their biggest wins of the season yesterday, defeating Syracuse and subsequently getting some votes in this weeks USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll. The eleven votes put Notre Dame as No. 33 team in the country. The top 8 of the poll remained the same, with a good amount of movement behind that.

Just a few upsets over the weekend which included former No. 22 Kansas State routing former No. 9 Oklahoma State, unranked UCF defeating former No. 19 Cincinnati, unranked Missouri beating former No. 25 South Carolina and obviously Notre Dame’s win over former No. 16 Syracuse

BYU vs Liberty Game Preview

Why BYU Will Win

BYU might not be having the season it wanted to have, but it was able to get by Baylor but couldn’t keep up in losses to Notre Dame and Arkansas.

That doesn’t mean it’s not good.

The passing game was strong against the Hogs, the running game was good against the Irish, and it should all work just fine against the Liberty defense.

The Flames might have stuffed the Wake Forest running game, but it hasn’t been tested by lines like BYU is about to bring.

On the other side, Liberty struggles to convert third down tries, there are way too many interceptions and too many turnovers, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Liberty Will Win

Liberty is a goldfish team – it gets as big or stays as small as the bowl.

It played great in a 37-36 loss to Wake Forest when the run defense showed up large and the offense clicked. It struggled to put away Gardner-Webb with a 21-20 win thanks to turnovers, and it took a fight to get by Akron and UMass.

However, the Flames find ways to win.

The defense is brilliant at coming up with picks helped by one of the nation’s best pass rushes. The defensive front is extremely active, the offensive side doesn’t have to worry about any sort of a pass rush from BYU, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

BYU needs to bring its offensive balance all while keeping the turnovers to a minimum. That’s where it’ll pull this off.

The three giveaways against Arkansas was off brand for an offense that turned it over just three times in the previous six games.

Liberty will be jacked up at home and take its game up a few notches to keep this close, but it won’t get the takeaways needed to go along with a big day from the running game.
