Louisiana vs Liberty Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Ragin’ Cajuns keep on rolling.

They might have lost the opener to Texas, but they’ve cranked out ten straight wins since, they’re on the way to the Sun Belt Championship game next week, and with a whole lot of help and luck, they could be in the mix for the New Year’s Six out of the Group of Five teams.

First, the offense has to get going against a Liberty defense that’s been good, but allowed over 450 yards in two of the last three games. To be fair one of those was against Ole Miss last week, but North Texas came up with a good balance and enough points to provide a push in a 35-26 loss.

Louisiana isn’t running the ball like it did last year, but there’s a good balance, there aren’t a lot of turnovers, and there shouldn’t be a whole lot of mistakes against a Liberty D that doesn’t take the ball away.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Liberty Will Win

The Flames get into the backfield.

The defense has a few issues here and there, but the line makes plays. Against a Louisiana attack that needs a little time to let things develop – and loves to get outside – it’s going to be tough with the Liberty ends crashing in.

This isn’t the smoothest of Ragin’ Cajun offenses. It gets the job done, but it makes things harder on itself than it needs to be. Defensively it’s been fantastic over the last several weeks, but it hasn’t faced anything like Malik Willis and the Flame backfield that ran for 284 yards on Ole Miss and averages close to 200 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like a good December bowl game at the end of November.

Louisiana has bigger fish to fry in a few weeks, and it’s got a rivalry date with ULM coming up next. First, it’s going to give Liberty a hard time for a full four quarters. The problem will be the lack of consistent scoring.

With a dangerous home finale against Army next week, the Flames need to get a win here to avoid a possible late season slide. They’ll get it, but they’ll have to come up with a few late scoring drives to get out alive.

Willis will be great when he needs to be.

Ole Miss vs Liberty Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

The offense is going to keep up the pace.

It might have been a mediocre few weeks for the Flames – with a close win over North Texas and a loss to ULM – but the offense still works.

This program gets up for games like this, and throw in the Hugh Freeze factor as he goes back to Oxford.

QB Malik Willis seems to have chilled with the interception problem he had in mid-October with three in back-to-back games, and now it’s time to shine against an Ole Miss defense that will give up well over 400 yards. The Liberty offense will be balanced, explosive, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The offensive line will be in for a long day.

The stats are skewed Willis is a runner and a playmaker who’ll get caught in the backfield on a regular basis, but the front five will struggle against a good Ole Miss pass rush that should help generate a few turnovers.

No, the Rebel defense isn’t going to be a rock, but it will have its moments.

With QB Matt Corral banged up and the receiving corps having injury issues, Ole Miss will run and run some more against a Liberty defensive front that allowed well over 200 rushing yards to both North Texas and UMass in the last two weeks.

There’s going to be balance with the Ole Miss attack – as always.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Liberty and Freeze will be jacked for their moment in a big game on the big stage like this, but Ole Miss will be fired up, too. There won’t be the normal late-season non-conference lull.

Both quarterbacks will be great, there will be plenty of big plays, and expect over 400 rushing yards between the two teams. The Rebel offense will pull away in the second half, but the points will be there with Willis coming up with a huge performance.

Liberty vs UMass Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

What happened to Liberty?

It’s still good, but it isn’t the consistently amazing offensive show of last year, even though almost all of the parts are back.

6-2 is hardly bad, but the offense hasn’t hit 400 yards in either of the last two games, the running game wasn’t there against North Texas, and UMass has to  try to keep things moving enough to hold up.

The Flame defense couldn’t slow down the North Texas running game, the pass defense has allowed over 200 yards in each of the last three games, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Liberty Will Win

Liberty is just fine.

It might not be quite as sharp and dominant as it was last year, but it’s playing well enough to pull against a UMass defense that’s been ripped up against the run on a regular basis.

The Minutemen might have pushed the offense against UConn, and it had a good game earlier in the year against Eastern Michigan, but they’re inconsistent and the running game will struggle to get anything consistently moving.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Liberty has been underwhelming over the last few weeks on the road, but it’s back at home, the UMass offense has scored seven points or fewer in three of the last four games, and this is when everything starts to look back to how it’s supposed to be.

Liberty vs North Texas Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

Can the Flames quickly bounce back from the inexcusable 31-28 clunker against ULM?

The offense was fine and the running game was great, but the turnovers were too much to overcome.

North Texas doesn’t move the ball consistently enough, the defense doesn’t generate third down stops, and there shouldn’t be any problems for the Flames to gear it back up with a good balance to tear off yards in chunks.

The ground game should take over fast – North Texas allowed over 300 yards to Missouri a few weeks ago. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why North Texas Will Win

The turnovers.

North Texas has a problem with them – especially interceptions – but Liberty has had the bigger issue over the last few weeks with three against Middle Tennessee not being a big deal, and three against ULM being a killer.

QB Malik Willis might still be dynamic and fantastic, but he’s not playing all that well. The Mean Green defense has to bother him, and on the other side, DeAndre Torrey and the running game have to keep going.

North Texas leads Conference USA in rushing, but …

What’s Going To Happen

That’s American Athletic Conference North Texas to you, at least in the near future.

Liberty will run for over 300 yards as it doesn’t force Willis to shoehorn in any passes – he won’t be needed to bomb away. North Texas will make this interesting with enough offense to matter, but the defensive side won’t be able to hold up.

Liberty vs ULM Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

The Flames got back on track in a hurry.

They lost the weeknight game to Syracuse, and that only seemed to anger them with blowout wins over UAB and Middle Tennessee to follow.

The offense has been terrifically balanced – well over 200 rushing yards and 200 passing, with 331 against UAB – the explosion is there, and the defense is cleaning up everything else by getting off the field in a hurry.

ULM’s offense is a work in progress.

It was able to throw a bit in the blowout loss to Georgia State, and it ran a little in the win over Troy, but it’s dead last in the nation overall averaging just 239 yards per game.

Liberty isn’t the team to play when you’re trying to get things going.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why ULM Will Win

The Warhawks are doing a slew of the little things right.

Penalties are a massive problem for Liberty, but ULM is only getting hit for around five a game.

The Warhawk O – for all of its issues – is at least putting points on the board when it gets the chance, and there aren’t a lot of turnovers and mistakes with just four giveaways.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

ULM just doesn’t move the ball well enough.

It doesn’t have any offensive explosion, and the defense is about to have a long day with the Liberty backfield that should be able to roam free. Get ready for a monstrous disparity in third down conversions.

QB Malik Willis, Jr. Liberty

The former Auburn Tiger has turned into a superstar and interesting pro prospect for Liberty. He’s not huge, but the 6-1, 215-pounder is one of the nation’s top dual-threat playmakers, throwing for well over 2,000 yards with 20 touchdowns along with 944 rushing yards and 14 scores last season. He’s got everyone around him to do even more.

2021 Preseason CFN Independent Defensive Player of the Year

S Kyle Hamilton, Jr. Notre Dame

Hamilton might not be the best defensive player in college football, but he’s not far off. When it comes to what you want in a next-level safety, here you go – 6-4, 219-pound size, big-time hitting skills, range, and the smarts and instincts to always be in the right position. He’s about to get an even higher profile as the star of a rebuilding Irish team.

Liberty College Football Preview 2021: Offense

It’s almost all coming back. Liberty got Hugh Freeze’s offense going, averaging 483 yards and 38 points per game – and that’s with a few battles against the ACC. If you liked that, you’re going to love what’s coming.

It all starts with one of the nation’s best dual-threat playmakers and a high-riser in NFL Draft circles – QB Malik Willis. He’s not all that big and isn’t exactly a pro-style passer, but he was good enough last year, is careful with the ball, and he was dangerous enough to lead the team with 944 rushing yards and 14 scores.

Of course Willis is still going to be Willis and run the O the way he’s been doing it over the last few years, but Liberty has a great back in former FCS star Joshua Mack back after running for close to 800 yards and four scores. Losing backup RB Peytton Pickett to Jackson State would hurt if Utah transfer TJ Green wasn’t on his way in to be Mack’s likely backup.

They’ll all work behind a terrific veteran line with all five starters expected back. The rushing attack averaged over 250 yards per game and the pass protection was good enough to give Willis a half-click more time to operate.

WR CJ Yarbrough has moved on from college football. He’s the only missing part. He was the team’s fourth-best receiver last year, but everyone else among the top nine receivers are back including the tight ends. DJ Stubbs and Kevin Shaa return for the super-senior seasons, and Demario Davis is a volume target coming off a strong freshman year.

NEXT: Liberty College Football Preview 2021: Defense

‘Humble’ Malik Willis endeared himself to Liberty teammates, coaches immediately

Former Auburn and current Liberty quarterback Malik Willis lit up college football last season. What can he do for an encore?

“He’s one of the most humble players I’ve ever coached.”

That is the first thing Liberty co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kent Austin has to say about his star quarterback Malik Willis.

I’m visiting Austin during a recent trip to Lynchburg and want to find out more about Willis. The Flames are one of the hottest topics in college football following a 10-1 season and victory in the Cure Bowl against previously undefeated Coastal Carolina.

Most of the attention, and deservedly so, is about Willis. The Auburn transfer thrived under the guidance of Austin and head coach Hugh Freeze, throwing for 2,260 yards and 20 touchdowns to just six interceptions while using his legs for 944 yards and 14 more scores.

Arriving at Liberty, Willis never played the big-time transfer card either.

“He’s really, really endearing to his teammates,” Austin said. “And that’s not in any way a manipulative or fake way. He’s just genuinely that guy. So he pulls people in right with his endearing nature and they know what he’s going through, his teammates know that Malik’s going to play as hard as he can to help them win the football game.”

Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

Endearing, sure. But how would Willis’ success translate to the field once real-live competition began? Pretty darn good. It took him no time to adjust to his first starting role in three years.

The Atlanta native began the 2020 season by helping the Flames pull off an upset at Western Kentucky, throwing for 133 yards and rushing for a team-high 168 yards and three touchdowns. Questions, however, still remained how accurate of a passer he could be.

Austin has, and still is, working with his protégé on that.

“I think he has more natural talent as a passer,” Austin said. “He just needed to develop that a little bit more in particular, with respect to a couple of fundamental flaws that he had. And the thing about Malik is he’s really coachable and he really, really, really wants to be great. He’s got a strong desire for that. So we just had to work on a few things with respect to his mechanics, that at least the last part of his skill became more consistent on a step-by-step basis.”

A lot of those flaws disappeared and his arm became a bigger asset. On October 24 in a matchup against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Willis completed 77.4 percent of his passes for 345 yards and six touchdowns. Now, he was the complete package and, suddenly, became a dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate.

His accuracy, not the yards or touchdowns, was what impressed Austin.

“The quarterback, the number one thing you have to have as a quarterback in our opinion is, is to be a great decision maker because if you don’t throw to the right guy the probability keeps going down and with respect to poor decisions.”

Learning not to panic was also a key contribution to Willis’ development.

“Malik will need to learn how to move and get himself in a position to deliver the ball without being mechanically out of whack, if that makes sense. So know the difference between moving in the pocket and keeping his hips and transferring his weight properly and getting on top of the ball and getting rid of some of that sidearm delivery stuff that he had as opposed to committing to run and then trying to recover for a pass, that’s what he used to do.

“And so he’d get his body all out of whack, cause he was looking for escape lanes and then he’d realized, ‘Oh, wait a minute. I still got a pocket. I just needed to move.'”

Being the star of the offense at quarterback, Willis also became a leader, but not in how you would expect. Austin says Willis is not a “rah-rah guy,” but isn’t about to change how his quarterback leads on and off the field.

“He’s not going to be a quarterback that’s going to go over there and grab you and get your attention and get in your face. He leads more by example, and he’s got more of a teaching spirit to him. You’ll see him a lot after a series when we’re on the sidelines, he’s there with receivers talking through things to prepare for the next series, talking with the offense alone, with respect to protection and these types of things.

Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

“Because when he’s in a game, a quarterback needs to learn how to, how to remove all the distractions and focus on the very next play and be able to execute the very next play with a great decision and we can handle it. We can handle those types of things easier on the sideline then we can during play. Cause we got to focus on the next play and make sure that we stay on the field and move the sticks.”

The expectations are sky high for Willis going into his senior season. He was recently named the Dudley Award Winner which goes to the best college football player each year in the state of Virginia and, in a piece for The Athletic, Bruce Feldman expects him to be the breakout quarterback for next year’s NFL draft.

Don’t expect that hype and attention to affect Willis, though.

“It’s very authentic with him,” Austin said.

Liberty Flames Football Schedule Analysis: There are just two games against Power Five programs, but they’re awfully juicy. The first is a Friday night date at Syracuse with a shot at beating the ACC team in its own house for a second straight year, and the second is Hugh Freeze going back to Oxford to go against Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss.

Most of the remaining games are more than winnable, but going to UAB in early October isn’t easy and playing Louisiana and Army at the very end in Lynchburg will be a blast.

On the plus side, with those last two games, November 6th at Ole Miss is the last road game, but three road games in four and five in seven will be before the mid-November week off.

The pre-spring version of the CFN 2021 rankings with a first look at all the Independent teams.

[jwplayer GOXHcfXn]

2021 Independent Rankings: Pre-Spring

1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Why To Be Happy: The defense should be fine. There are just enough losses to matter, but if Kyle Hamilton isn’t the best safety in college football he’ll be up there, and the line gets back the interior with Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa and Kurt Hinish coming back. QB Ian Book might be gone, but Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan and newbie Tyler Buchner are interesting options to go with. However …

What To Work On: The Irish lose a ton. The offensive line has become a factory, but there’s a lot of work to be done up front, the linebacking corps has to replace key parts, and the receiving corps loses the top wideouts.

Bottom Line: The Irish will be fine. They’re still full of talented players working around a good group of talent waiting to step up, and the recruiting classes have stocked the shelves. The issue will be the expectations. Notre Dame has done the College Football Playoff thing – it wants to win it. It’s going to take a whole lot of reworking to get there.
2021 Notre Dame Schedule Analysis, Best & Worst Scenarios

2. Liberty Flames

Why To Be Happy: Almost everyone has decided to come back. Total yard star QB Malik Willis – back. RB Joshua Mack – back. All the 2020 seniors on the O line, almost all of the top receivers, and everyone on D? Back, back, and close to all back full. Throw in a few interesting transfers – like Utah RB TJ Green and defensive backs Skyler Thomas (Washington State) and Cedric Stone (UTEP) and the Flames should once again be outstanding.

What To Work On: Expectations? Liberty – think about that for a moment … Liberty – will be in a whole lot of preseason top 25 rankings and will be expected to repeat the huge 2020 and be a killer every time out. The turnovers have to slow, and the explosion has to be there against big boys, but now the spotlight is on.

Bottom Line: With all of the returning talent and with head coach Hugh Freeze still around – and not at Tennessee – anything less than another amazing year will be a massive disappointment.

3. BYU Cougars

Why To Be Happy: This might not be the high-flying fun show of last year, but it’ll still be a tough team with a great group of skill parts despite some huge losses. The running backs are good, the defensive should be fine in the back seven, and the team will still be physical on the lines. However …

What To Work On: Last year’s powerhouse loses a ton. QB Zach Wilson, OT Brady Christensen, WR Dax Milne, OG Tristen Hoge, and on and on and on. The Cougars have enough good players to be more than just good and not drop off all that much, QB Baylor Romney isn’t going to be Wilson.

Bottom Line: It’ll be another strong season for the Cougars, but the high-end talent loss is too much to expect a special repeat season like 2020.

4. Army Black Knights

Why To Be Happy: The running backs return. The Black Knights are expected to get back their top five rushers, QB Tyhier Tyler, and for what it’s worth, almost everyone who caught a pass. Eight of the top ten tacklers should be back, but …

What To Work On: The offensive line needs a ton of reworking. It’s Army, so plenty of players have been trained over the years to be ready to fill in, but it’s still going to take a bit to mix in four new starters to get all the timing down.

Bottom Line: You know exactly what you’re getting. The Army D might not be quite as nasty as it was throughout 2020, but it won’t be all that far off. The offensive side will do what it does, but again, it needs the line to gel in a hurry.

5. New Mexico State Aggies

Why To Be Happy: It’ll be a very, very interesting season for the Aggies. They not only get a season again after missing 2020, but they’ll have a real spring football session with three games from late February to early March to tune things up for the real thing this this Fall.

What To Work On: Since winning the New Mexico Bowl at the end of the 2017 season the program has won three games against FBS teams. The program has to find an offense that can keep things moving, and the nation’s second-worst run D in 2019 has to be a whole lot better.

Bottom Line: It’s one of the most interesting situations in a long, long time thanks to the three game spring session. There are a whole slew of new, young parts who weren’t around in 2020 ready to get a chance.

6. UConn Huskies

Why To Be Happy: There might not have been a 2020 season, but almost everyone is expected to be back. This was going to be a very young team last year, and now the program has had a year of upping the weightlifting and conditioning. But …

What To Work On: The program has just one win over an FBS program since 2017 and is 1-27 in its last 28 games against the big-league teams. That one win? UMass. It all starts with figuring out a defense that did nothing for a few years before the 2020 cancellation.

Bottom Line: It’s going to be a rough year, but it’s a young team in full reboot mode with no expectations and a whole lot of players ready to start playing again.

7. UMass Minutemen

Why To Be Happy: The coaching staff has been active in the transfer portal. It got its quarterback – maybe – in Tyler Lytle from Colorado, it’s running back in – maybe – Kay’Ron Adams from Rutgers, and with a whole lot of help for the defensive front and the secondary. However, on the other side …

What To Work On: Around 18-to-20 players are expected to be gone through the transfer portal. It’s not like the Minutemen were able to do much of anything with that group in place, but it’s going to take a full offseason to figure out any semblance of a proper depth chart.

Bottom Line: After scoring one touchdown and 12 points in four games, and after going 1-17 in the last 18 games, the program still has a whole lot of work to do under head man Walt Bell. He’s fighting the good fight, but this is going to be a grind.
