Report: Former Aggies safety Leon O’Neal suspended indefinitely by Indoor Football League

According to a new report, former Texas A&M safety Leon O’Neal has been suspended indefinitely by the Indoor Football League following an incident on July 2.

According to a new report, former Texas A&M safety Leon O’Neal has been suspended indefinitely by the Indoor Football League following an incident on July 2 when the former Aggie entered the stands to confront a fan.

In details shared through The Eagle, cameras caught O’Neal making his way to the stands and then hurdling the field barrier to confront a fan not far from the front. O’Neal would go on to return to the field, but several other players joined the altercation, which included punches being thrown.

O’Neal currently plays for the Massachusetts Pirates, who were on the road to face the Arizona Rattlers at the time and date of the incident.

Four players, including O’Neal, were ejected from the game and were suspended the next day by IFL commissioner Todd Tryon, who issued a statement in the aftermath:

“Under zero circumstance can you ever go beyond the wall and into the stands. This is a one-time incident that does not reflect what the IFL stands for. We are a family-friendly league that offers great sports entertainment, and we will continue to build on that moving forward. What was a very exciting game was marred by the actions of a few. These actions will never be tolerated and are being fully dealt with.”

O’Neal claimed on Twitter Wednesday that he was called a racial slur after he took a helmet-to-helmet hit on the field. He issued another tweet that he was retiring from football, however, both tweets have since been deleted.

O’Neal played 40 games across three seasons with Texas A&M, recording 161 tackles with 10 for loss along with six interceptions. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers after going drafted in the 2022 NFL Draft but was waved after suffering an injury in training camp.

In February, he signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League but was later released on June 4. O’Neal signed with the Pirates shortly after on June 8.

As of Wednesday afternoon, O’Neal is still listed on the Pirates’ active roster and is only listed as suspended per the league’s transaction wire.

Leon O’Neal making his way north of the border

Former Texas A&M safety Leon O’Neal making his way north of the border to the CFL

Leon O’Neal left the Texas A&M football program after the 2021 season after serving as a linchpin in the Aggies secondary for several years. His first stop after college was as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers, before he was released during training camp. He originally reverted to the 49ers injured reserve but was released with an injury settlement a few days later.

For his next stop, Leon will be looking further north. Way further, as he has signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian football league.

The Roughriders finished the 2022 season on a tough note, losing 7 games in a row, and finishing 6-12 on the year.

Saskatchewan kicks off their 2023 regular season on Sunday, June 11 on the road against the Edmonton Elks.

49ers roster moves: Veteran CB signed, undrafted DB waived

The #49ers made a couple roster moves, including the addition of a veteran CB to help their ailing secondary.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a pair of roster moves. They added veteran cornerback Ken Crawley, and in a corresponding move waived/injured undrafted safety Leon O’Neal.

Crawley will give the 49ers some much-needed depth in their secondary with CBs Emmanuel Moseley and Charvarius Ward both dealing with injuries.

The Saints originally signed Crawley as an undrafted free agent after the 2016 draft. He debuted for the club that year when he played in 15 games with five starts. Crawley started all 13 games he played in 2017, then started five of his 10 games the following year. There was a brief stint in Miami in 2019 after the Saints waived him, then he wound up back with the Saints for 2020 and 2021.

In his career Crawley has played in 55 games with 25 starts. He has two interceptions and 32 pass breakups.

O’Neal signed with the 49ers after this year’s draft. The Texas A&M product had a pre-draft visit with San Francisco, but a crowded safety room was going to make it hard for him to nose his way into a role. An injury designation means he’ll revert to the 49ers’ Injured Reserve if he isn’t claimed off waivers.

Leon O’Neal to sign with the 49ers

Leon O’Neal to join @49ers as an undrafted free agent.

One of the hardest-working and most beloved players in recent A&M history, Leon O’Neal wasn’t drafted this weekend, but he did sign with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent shortly after the draft ended on Saturday evening.

Standing at 6-0 1/2 feet and 204 pounds, O’Neal has great size for the safety position and is one of the better zone defenders in the draft with a keen ability to locate routes and get to the receiver immediately. During his time with the Aggies, O’Neal was known as one of the toughest players who was always looking to “sort through the trash” in run support, gaining the admiration of his fellow teammates.

If he can secure a position on the roster, Leon O’Neal has the chance to make an immediate impact on special teams with the potential to find a role in the safety rotation down the road.

NFL Draft 2022: Which Aggies should hear their names called on Day 3?

Which Aggies should hear their names called on Day 3?

In the last two nights, 105 players have been selected in the NFL draft, in a bit of a surprise, only two of those players, Kenyon Green, who was selected 15th overall by the Houston Texans, and defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal who was picked 84th by the Pittsburgh Steelers, attended Texas A&M University. Many draft pundits believed atleast a third Aggie would be selected by the end of the second day. Now it seems as though the third and final day will be the day of the Aggies as we expect to see six Aggies picked before Mr. Irrelevant’s name is called in Las Vegas.

2022 NFL draft: Which A&M players are waiting to hear their name called?

2022 NFL draft: Which A&M players are waiting to hear their name called?

The first day and first round of the 2022 NFL draft are officially over, with 32 men hearing their names called and ready to start their professional football careers. For Texas A&M, offensive lineman Kenyon Green became the first of hopefully a number of Aggies drafted, selected 15th overall by the Houston Texans, staying close to home and looking to make an impact right away.

With seven other Aggies looking to be drafted on day two and day three, teams will be eyeing areas of need to supplement their rosters, and with this being one of the more talented A&M draft classes, teams will be getting a steal in later rounds, as we see every year after the first round concludes. Let’s see who’s left before the second and third rounds begin.

Packers meet virtually with Texas A&M S Leon O’Neal

The Packers will have a virtual Zoom meeting with Texas A&M S Leon O’Neal, a potential special teams standout at the next level.

Texas A&M safety Leon O’Neal will have a virtual meeting with the Green Bay Packers, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network.

O’Neal (6-0, 204) played in 48 games and made 32 starts over four years at Texas A&M. He intercepted two passes each of the last two seasons, leading the team each year. He finished his collegiate career with 10 tackles for losses, 18 pass breakups and six interceptions.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranks O’Neal as the No. 20 overall safety in the 2022 draft class and projects him to be a late-round draft pick.

The Packers could see O’Neal as a future subpackage safety with special teams potential. Brennen Rupp of Packers Wire included O’Neal among his 40 special teams standouts in the 2022 draft class.

At the combine, O’Neal hit 35″ in the vertical leap, covered 10-5 in the broad jump, finished the three-cone drill in 6.89 seconds and completed 15 reps on the bench press. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds on Texas A&M’s pro day.

From Rupp’s scouting report: “O’Neal is at his best playing closer to the scrimmage as an extra linebacker. He’s a solid run defender and has the quickness and toughness to match up with tight ends in coverage…may never be a starting safety in the league, but he has the size, quickness, and toughness to be a special teams standout.”

O’Neal, a Texas native, is 23 years old. He started at least 10 games each of his last three seasons at Texas A&M and later participated at the 2022 Senior Bowl.
