CBS Sports’ Leger Douzable sums up the Haason Reddick situation – ‘This hold out could last awhile’

One CBS Sports analyst believes the Haason Reddick hold out might drag on.

Leger Douzable believes that the Haason Reddick hold out situation could drag on for a bit and that the New York Jets defensive end is wanting to be compensated at the level of an elite pass rusher.

Multiple reports on Tuesday said that Reddick, whom the Jets traded for this offseason, will hold out from training camp.

Douzable, who played three seasons for the Jets beginning in 2015, is now an analyst for CBS Sports.

In talking on CBS Sports Network along with Charles Davis, Douzable said on Monday that that the offseason trade for Reddick started promising. But now, things have turned and this situation is one where the player holds significant bargaining chips.

“This is very complicated. This is an interesting scenario with Haason Reddick because there were rumors when he got traded for, that he was going to show up for the offseason program. That the Jets talked to him and said we’ll revisit the contract after this year,” Douzable said on CBS.

“Supposedly, again these are rumors, supposedly he was OK with that. Well he ended up getting a little bit of leverage when the Jets traded away John Franklin-Myers. So he knows Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich defense is based off the defensive line creating havoc.

“Haason Reddick has been one of the best in the NFL doing it. When you look at what he has done over the last four years – four straight seasons of at least 11 sacks.

“He is one of the best guys, CD (Charles Davis), in getting the ball off the quarterback – game-changing plays.”

Reddick is a due a base salary of $14.25 million this season and will become a free agent next year.

Douzable went on to highlight that Reddick does hold considerable clout in how this all could and will shake out, along with an ominous prediction that this dispute might not end quickly.

“They don’t really have much depth there so I’m going to use my leverage right now because I’m only slated to make $15 million with the top ends in the league making $30 million plus,” Douzable said.

“He is severely underpaid. I think this holdout could last a while. Would not be surprised…if they work on something this year, to get him more money this year, maybe incentive based.”

Former NFL veteran Leger Douzable, now an ESPN analyst, takes a look at Rutgers football commit’s Aaris Bethea’s film

Leger Douzable weighs in on Rutgers football recruit Aaris Bethea’s game film.

Last week, Aaris Bethea committed to Rutgers football, giving the Scarlet Knights an impressive defensive lineman. For former NFL defensive lineman Leger Douzable, Bethea has some interesting tools to work with.

Bethea is a member of the 2024 recruiting class and plays at Erasmus Hall. He is the first player in this class to commit to Rutgers from New York.

Douzable, a 10-year veteran of the NFL (including three years spent with the New York Jets), is currently a college football analyst for ESPN and also an analyst for CBS Sports. A former standout at UCF, he was an All-Conference USA selection (third team) in 2006.

After watching some of Bethea’s tape from his junior season, Douzable believes there are some solid attributes there in the three-star’s tape as he transitions from high school to the Big Ten.

“Good initial quickness, has good length and long arms,” Douzable told Rutgers Wire this week.

“Will probably start on edge with the ability to kick down once he gains mass. Needs to work on hand usage but still very young and pad level which are both coachable.”

Bethea announced a final four in late May of Virginia Tech, Nebraska and Ole Miss as well as Rutgers. A consensus three-star, he also held offers from Maryland, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia among others.

Ex-Jets DL Leger Douzable thinks Trevor Lawrence would be a good fit in New York

Leger Douzable believes Trevor Lawrence is best suited for New York and should consider the building blocks in place before making a choice.

Leger Douzable doesn’t buy into the idea that Trevor Lawrence should do everything in his power to avoid playing for the Jets. In fact, the former Jets defensive lineman believes Lawrence would be a good fit in New York.

There have been rumblings that Lawrence would be better suited spurning the Jets by either returning to Clemson for a graduate year or forcing a trade if New York secures the No. 1 overall pick. However, Douzable believes the Jets have plenty to offer Lawrence in the form of a supporting cast. Denzel Mims is coming into his own, while Jamison Crowder is a reliable target working out of the slot. Breshad Perriman is a free agent at season’s end, but showed what he can do against the Patriots as a viable deep threat when healthy.

“We saw [Monday] night that there are complementary receivers, especially [Jamison] Crowder in the slot, [Breshad] Perriman is on a one year deal, but [Denzel] Mims is a guy that’s going to be there for the next three or four years and he showed flashes [Monday] night,” Douzable told Jake Asman of The Jake Asman Show this week. “You have complimentary receivers if they stay healthy and on the field, that Trevor Lawrence could potentially work with. And you’ve got [La’Mical] Perine as the young back in the backfield. I’m sure they’ll bring in another back.”

Douzable also sees Mekhi Becton as a potential game-changing left tackle to serve as Lawrence’s blind-side protector. Lawrence has benefitted from having a clean pocket more often than not at Clemson and the Tigers’ tackle play is a big reason why. In only the first half of his rookie season, Becton has proven he can keep his quarterback clean with regularity — which should entice Lawrence.

“You’ve probably got one of the best young left tackles in all of football in Mekhi Becton,” Douzable said. “So Trevor Lawrence, for all intents and purposes, should come to the Jets because he knows he’s going to have a left tackle that’s going to protect his blind side.”

Whether Lawrence is up for the challenge of playing in New York remains to be seen. The Jets still have work to do to secure the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft, too. Either way, Douzable is firm in his belief that Lawrence would look good donning the green and white.
