The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story gets spring launch date

The action RPG will take players deeper into the Runeterra universe.

Mageseeker, the latest League of Legends spinoff game, has a release date at long last.

On Tuesday, Riot Games announced that Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story is coming out on April 18, 2023, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. Pre-orders are already live, with the Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition going for $29.99 and $39.99, respectively.

Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story is an action RPG with beautiful 2D pixel art that’s being developed by Digital Sun, the studio behind the critically-acclaimed Moonlighter. Check out the release announcement trailer for yourself below to see how stunning it is in action.

Over the past year and a half, Riot Games has steadily grown the League of Legends universe with several spinoffs. Hextech Mayhem and Ruined King were among the first, while Convergence will launch later this summer. There’s also Project L, the studio’s long-awaited fighting game that we’ll hopefully hear more about soon.

Given how staggeringly huge Riot Games is, it’s no surprise that the company is branching out well beyond League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, and Valorant.

Riot is releasing a League of Legends platformer game this summer

Riot is almost ready to launch Convergence, the League of Legends game that blends platforming with the MOBA’s most popular characters

Riot is almost ready to launch Convergence, the League of Legends game that blends platforming action with some of the multiplayer game‘s most popular characters. Over a year after unveiling the game, Riot announced Convergence will launch sometime in summer 2023 for PC, PS5 and PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Convergence doesn’t have a solid release date yet – just a summer timeframe.

The announcement came as part of a broader roadmap teasing what Riot has in store for the rest of the year, which, aside from Convergence, includes Mageseeker, an RPG set to launch in spring 2023.

Convergence follows Ekko in his youth as he travels across Zaun, using his signature time abilities to manipulate the universe and any foe who stands in his way. While you’d expect jumping in a platformer game, Convergence does things a bit differently. Riot describes it as a “parkour platformer,” so expect plenty of high-flying shenanigans and vertigo-inducing challenges along Ekko’s journey.

That’s about all Riot had to say for Convergence, which, admittedly, is about the same as Riot’s said for Convergence in the last two years. Hopefully, we’ll get a glimpse of a dedicated trailer in the coming months ahead of Convergence’s launch.

Riot refuses to pay hackers ransom for League of Legends source code

‘Needless to say, we won’t pay,” says Riot in a statement regarding the hack.

Last week, Riot Games announced its suspicions that the League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics source code had been stolen as part of a social engineering hack. Now, the studio is pushing back against the hacker’s demands.

On Tuesday, Riot Games confirmed the breach – along with a ransom request from the hackers responsible for it.

“Over the weekend, our analysis confirmed source code for [League of Legends], [Teamfight Tactics], and a legacy anti-cheat platform were exfiltrated by the attackers,” Riot said on Twitter. “Today, we received a ransom email. Needless to say, we won’t pay.”

Riot Games went on to state that it “remains confident” that no personal player data was compromised. However, the studio did warn that this hack could lead to new cheats emerging on its games.

“Our security teams and globally recognized external consultants continue to evaluate the attack and audit our systems,” Riot continues. “We’ve also notified law enforcement and are in active cooperation with them as they investigate the attack and the group behind it.”

For over a decade, League of Legends has been one of the most popular multiplayer games out there – partially due to its enormous esports scene. That focus on hyper-competitive gameplay often leads to plenty of in-game toxicity, but Riot is takings steps to combat it.

Riot is changing LoL tournament times and fans aren’t happy

Riot announced a change in LoL tournament times to accommodate the MOBA event’s European viewers, and fans are less than pleased

Riot Games announced changes to its Valorant tournaments and League of Legends tournaments for 2023, and among the promises of new formats and improved scheduling was a change that has some fans less than happy. Riot is changing LoL tournament times during the week, moving the esports events earlier in the day – rather earlier than most fans want.

“Weekdays are an underserved opportunity. Research has shown that the demand for LoL Esports and game content is split evenly between weekdays and weekends,” Riot said in the announcement. “Whether it’s getting ready for a night of playing, or watching a favorite stream while studying, viewing esports has become part of a weekday routine for many of us. Big events will still be anchored around weekends, but the viewing behaviors we have seen in the VCT, LCK, and LPL showed that there was an appetite for content on other days as well.”

To that end, matches in the championship series will air on Thursdays and Fridays at 12 p.m. Pacific time. It’s a curious move and the only broadcast change that puts events on air in the middle of the day for North and South American viewers, on a workday and a school day at that. Valorant matches will air during the week as well, but start after 5 p.m. Central time

Fan reaction was generally negative.

“What sort of research tells you that [championship series] is best at 12 pm when people have work/classes,” one Twitter user wrote.

Popular Twitch streamer Brian Kibler was even more blunt.

“I guess I’m done ever watching [championship series] anymore, and I’ve been a regular watcher since literally day one,” he wrote on Twitter. “Noon on weekdays is a completely insane time to broadcast and expect anyone to watch.”

Whether Riot takes fan feedback on board remains to be seen, but for the first few months of 2023 at least, this is their broadcast plan.

Riot and Ubisoft are launching a project to combat toxicity in games

Riot and Ubisoft hope their research into player behavior can help stop harmful chats before problems occur

Ubisoft and League of Legends maker Riot announced a new initiative meant to help reduce toxicity in online game chats. Officially called the Zero Harm in Comms project, the research will improve both companies’ artificial intelligence with the aim of creating a “cross-industry database and labeling ecosystem” that will make it easier for AI to identify potentially harmful in-game behavior before it happens.

“We are exploring how to better prevent in-game toxicity as designers of these environments with a direct link to our communities,” Yves Jacquier, executive director at Ubisoft La Forge, said in a statement.  “Disruptive player behaviors is an issue that we take very seriously but also one that is very difficult to solve. At Ubisoft, we have been working on concrete measures to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences, but we believe that, by coming together as an industry, we will be able to tackle this issue more effectively.”

While the two companies may seem like an unusual combination, the rationale behind the project is that between Ubisoft’s wide variety of online games and the intensely competitive nature of Riot’s games, the initiative should be able to capture a broad range of problematic behavior and language.

Both companies will share their research with the broader industry in 2023, presumably at the Game Developers Conference, though the statement didn’t provide an exact date.

The project seems poised to make a difference in the game experience for players. Now someone just needs to figure out how to protect the development teams themselves from fan harassment online.
